Glenn Close 'distraught' over cameo in raunchy Navy video

Filed under: News and tagged:

Navy Capt. Owen Honors lost his his command of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise over raunchy joke videos he made to entertain the crew in 2006 and 2007 (when he was an executive officer). Now he has made an enemy of Glenn Close. The actress has expressed outrage over an unauthorized cameo she makes in one of the videos, which surfaced last week and cost Honors his job.

A clip of Close from her 2006 tour of the warship features at the end of the video in question, which contains coarse language, anti-gay slurs, and jokes with homophobic overtones (in one sketch, Honors is seen in a bathing cap, trying to find an unoccupied shower, and discovering many same-sex shipmates lathering each other up).

In a statement, Close said: “I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor. The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request made during a visit to an aircraft carrier over four years ago.”

She has been an outspoken proponent of gay rights and equal treatment, particularly in the military. In 1995, she starred in the TV movie Serving in Silence, about a National Guard colonel who fought her discharge after coming out as a lesbian.

Lindsay Lohan's lawyer insists actress was sober during Betty Ford stay

Filed under: News and tagged:

Amidst Internet reports claiming that police believe Lindsay Lohan was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while staying at Betty Ford Center, the actress’ lawyer insists that Lohan was sober during her stint. “I had numerous conversations with Betty Ford counselors and doctors over the course of Lindsay’s treatment there and it was never suggested by anyone that she ever drank or used drugs. Her discharge letter from the facility is totally consistent with that,” Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said in a statement. The Palm Desert Police Department — who kicked off an investigation of Lohan for criminal battery last month after the actress sparred with a former Betty Ford employee — is not addressing the Internet reports, and will only confirm that their investigation found that Lohan might have violated terms of her probation.

Courtney Love sued for defamation after Twitter tirade

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Courtney Love’s Twitter feed has gotten her in trouble again — only this time, it’s not the tabloid type of trouble. (Well, not exclusively.) Love is now facing a defamation lawsuit brought by designer Dawn Simorangkir, which claims that Love’s March 2009 Twitter tirade against her damaged her reputation and career. This marks the first high-profile defamation case based on a celebrity’s Twitter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Love’s tweets … announced that Simorangkir was a drug-pushing prostitute with a history of assault and battery who lost custody of her own child and capitalized on Love’s fame before stealing from her. ‘She has received a VAST amount of money from me over 40,000 dollars and I do not make people famous and get raped TOO!’ Love wrote.” The tweets have since been deleted.

The trial begins Jan. 18.

Michael Jackson's doctor attends manslaughter hearing

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of giving Michael Jackson a lethal dose of the sedative Propofol, attended court in Los Angeles Tuesday for his trial’s preliminary hearing. Prosecutors claim that Murray, who is facing involuntary manslaughter charges, waited to call 911 after Jackson had stopped breathing and hid evidence that he had given the pop sensation a dose of Propofol that led to his death on June 25, 2009. Said Deputy District Attorney David Walgren during the hearing, “In the opinion of medical experts, there were a number of actions by Dr. Murray that showed an extreme deviation from the standard of care.”

Also giving testimony during the hearing: This Is It director Kenny Ortega, who insisted that Jackson was “involved, active, participating” during his final rehearsal just hours before his death. The defense will likely argue that Jackson’s grueling rehearsal schedule and pressure attached to his upcoming concert tour was in part responsible for his passing. Two weeks of testimony is scheduled before the case will be considered for a jury trial. If convicted, Murray could lose his license to practice medicine and face four years in prison.
