GhostbustersImage Credit: Everett CollectionPaging Dr. Venkman. You’re wanted on the set of Ghostbusters 3. Ivan Reitman, the man who directed and produced 1984′s box-office smash Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel, says a “very good script” for a third film in the knee-slapping ghost-hunting franchise has been sent to Bill Murray. According to the Associated Press, Reitman added, “nothing you’ve read on the internet is accurate” and that Murray has not yet read a script for Ghostbusters 3. Reitman also says he believes that the new screenplay is strong enough to be filmed — “it’s good enough to do, to take the risk of doing again.” Reitman did not say who had written the long-awaited screenplay or whether the other two stars of the franchise, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, had also been sent the script. Stay tuned.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' may be violating consumer protection laws, says public advocate

Filed under: News and tagged:

Yet another bump in the road for Broadway’s troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark: New York City public advocate Bill de Blasio sent a letter to New York’s Department of Consumer Affairs, claiming that the show may be violating consumer protection laws. According to the Jan. 5 letter, Spider-Man could be fined for not clearly distinguishing when its preview performances end and its official shows begin. Blasio argued that consumers should be aware of the state of the show they are seeing, since prices for tickets could reach well into the hundreds. “At those prices, consumers deserve to know what they are purchasing, and there is a real difference between seeing an unfinished show in previews versus one that has officially opened. That many shows do not advertise that they are previews, either in promotions or at the point of ticket sales, is unacceptable.”

Rick Miramontez, a spokesperson for the production, issued the following statement to EW: “It seems that everyone in the world, with the exception of a few critics, is well aware of the fact that the show is still in previews. The preview period is an essential part of making any show, and it’s an exciting time to be in the audience. It is also very clear and well documented that our opening night is Feb. 7.”

'Harry Potter' plagiarism suit dismissed

A lawsuit claiming that J.K. Rowling had copied another author’s work to write Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was dismissed this morning in New York, according to Reuters. The estate of the late writer Adrian Jacobs had claimed that Rowling’s work was oddly similar to his 1987 book, Willy the Wizard, especially parts describing train travel and a wizarding contest. Scholastic, Potter‘s U.S. publisher, said in a statement: “The Court’s swift dismissal supports our position that the case was completely without merit and that comparing Willy the Wizard to the Harry Potter series was absurd.”

Anna Nicole Smith's boyfriend walks away from charges

Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith’s former lawyer and boyfriend, had his conspiracy felony charges dismissed by Judge Robert J. Perry, according to People. In October, Stern had been convicted of two counts for enabling Smith’s drug addiction by obtaining drugs for her under false names. She died of an accidental overdose in 2007 at the age of 39. The judge ignored the jury’s verdict, claiming that there was no evidence Stern intended fraud or deception, and granted the defense’s motion for a new trial.

Michael Jackson's children saw him unconscious, witness testifies

Filed under: News and tagged:

A bodyguard for Michael Jackson testified on Wednesday that two of Jackson’s children witnessed their father lying unconscious on his bed the day he died, People and Reuters are reporting. In the second day of preliminary hearings determining whether Dr. Conrad Murray should be tried for involuntary manslaughter, Alberto Alvarez testified that Jackson’s children Prince and Paris, then 12 and 11, had walked into their father’s bedroom while Murray was administering to the unconscious pop star. ”Paris screamed ‘Daddy’ and she started crying, and Dr. Murray said, ‘Get them out, don’t let them see their father like this,’” Alvarez said to the court. ”I turned to the children and I told them, ‘Don’t worry children, we’ll take care of it, please go outside.’ And I escorted them out of the bedroom.”

Alvarez had also testified that Murray had ordered him to put several medical vials in a bag before calling 911. Jackson’s sisters Janet and LaToya, his mother Katherine, and father Joe all attended the hearing.

Michael Jackson bodyguard testifies Conrad Murray ordered him to put vials in a bag

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

At the preliminary hearing centered on charges of involuntary manslaughter against Dr. Conrad Murray in the death of Michael Jackson, a former bodyguard for the pop singer testified on Wednesday that Murray had ordered him to put a handful of vials and an intravenous bag in canvas sacks before 911 was called. The Associated Press reports Alberto Alvarez, who was the first security to reach Jackson’s bedroom, said that Murray placed several vials in a plastic bag and then asked him to put them in a sack. The testimony could help corroborate prosecutors’ arguments that Murray had shown ”an extreme deviation from the standard of care” in administering the powerful sedative Propofol to the singer, had tried to conceal his negligence, and had botched efforts to revive the singer by waiting an inordinately long time to call paramedics.
