Filed under: Celebrity Babies!, Movies, News and tagged:

In a surprise announcement, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban announced the December arrival of Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, who was born through a gestational carrier on December 28 in Nashville. A spokesperson for the duo said the baby is Urban and Kidman’s biological child, and issued this statement from the couple: “Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret. No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier.” The couple also has a two-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose.

Is gestational carrier the same as a surrogate? Why did they call it that? It sounds so much more clinical.

    • K

I think they use that term to be clear that biologically the child is theirs. In some surrogate arrangements the surrogate is in fact the biological mother as well as carrier.

    • Linney17

It is the same but I think they were trying to maintain the fact that the baby is biologically theirs. A surrogate, at least is legal terms, is often someone who is carrying a child that is biologically theirs (at least half) and then given to another set of parents. Gestational carrier indicates that the surrogate’s only role was gestations-growth of the baby.

  • Alix

Maybe they use that term to specify that the surrogate is not the biological mother. Dang, they sure kept THAT story quiet!

  • mariela

so, nicole can’t carry children anymore?

    • JB

Some people can’t. Which isn’t really any of our business to investigate.

      • Cate

        Exactly. None of our business.

      • Michelle

It really isn’t our business. If I were to have another baby this is the route I’d have to go. My baby and I nearly died during delivery last time.

  • mariela

    she had sunday though

    • sherri p

Doesn’t mean a dang thing. I’ve got a friend and they suggested that after her first baby not to have anymore because the first baby caused so much kidney damage that a second could kill her. And as previously stated, none of our business.

    • Traci

Nicole is in her 40s the older you are the more dangerous to have child.

    • MsSuniDaze

She may have had a difficult pregnancy with Sunday, and is at higher risk per her age. I’m glad they were able to keep this private. I’m happy for them. They are a cute family.

    • but p!

Also remember, she had previously had a miscarriage with Tom Cruise.

    • Stone

Dag nabbit good stuff you whippesranpeprs!

  • California

I am so happy for them! I’m not too surprised to hear that they went the surrogacy route considering the rumors about Nicole’s difficulting carrying in the past (rumors about miscarriages while she was with Tom). She is very slender and I think diabetic, maybe the combo doesn’t lend for easy child rearing. lol either way, still just very happy for their little family!!

  • megan

    so happpy for them

  • MWeyer

I was confused at first as I had no idea Kidman was pregnant but then read the rest. Good for them.

  • allie

Very happy for them but “gestational carrier”? Really? Couldn’t they just say the woman who carried our baby to term? Like it or not, that “gestational carrier” lovingly took care of their fetus for months and that fact alone should give her a more personal term.

    • Meg

It could be possible that the gestational carrier didn’t know she was pregnant with Nicole and Keith’s baby. And if that is the correct/appropriate term, then why NOT use it? Why make things more complicated–”gestational carrier” means exactly what it says. “The woman who carried our baby to term” is a more ambgiuous and vague wording; it could refer to surrogacy or adoption, in which the child wouldn’t be 100% biologically theirs.

      • allie

I understand what you are saying – it just seems so cold. Childbirth is a beautiful thing – all of it. From conception to pregancy to birth. Doesn’t matter to me if it is a surrogate or the biological mother – it is a wonderful thing to bear a child and “gestational carrier” turns the woman that carried their fetus (Granted it is a mouthful – feel free to go back to surrogate) into a life size test tube. An accurate description? Yes. A term that totally dehumanizes the wonder of being a woman? Yes.

    • Greta

It’s not impolite to be accurate, and the proper place for them to show their true personal appreciation is NOT the public statement released by their publicist.

      • j.Mellon

Please…I am sure they have expressed gratitude and appreciation privately as well. Have you ever seen either of these two interviewed? Incredibly humble and gracious.

    • ALS

Think of Sara Jessica Parkers situation, when she and hubby Mathew Brodrick used a Surrogate for their twins. The press found out the womans name and where she lived and boom doesn’t someone try and steal information about the pregancy, the woman past and SJP and family. Using the term maybe a way to keep the tabs at bay or at best hinder their pursuit.

It surprises me that this couple who got married in the Catholic Church could against the Church’s teaching decide to go this route. Well, God bless them all the same.

    • Marianna

Did the Vatican actually come out with a posistion paper regarding the use of surrogates and gestational carriers? I’m not picking, I’m just interested in knowing whether or not they’ve issued an official posistion paper and what those contents might be.

      • Greta

The Vatican would object to this because, as the child was conceived outside of the body, it’s TOTALLY WRONG. Whereas a fertility treatment that takes place totally within the woman’s body is A-OK. If you can figure out why one of these is a sinful and the other is totally right with God, you must be a cardinal; personally, I think that any way people create a happy, healthy family for themselves is a good thing.

      • MsSuniDaze

There is a letter by Pope Paul VI against surrogacy. Basically the church states that s-x is used to procreate. No s-x without babies, no babies without s-x. It’s controversial though. Usually couples that are not medically able to conceive still do this.

      • Marianna

Thank you Greta and MsSuniDaze. Loved the crack about being a cardinal. Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozac set the diocese of Toronto back into the stone age. I think the Vatican always found Emmett Cardinal Carter a little too progressive and flamboyant to their liking and tried to bring things back into the straight, narrow and rigid with Ambrozac. Well, they succeeded admirably with that but in the end it backfired badly because he alienated and hurt so much of the laity. We have a new cardinal now in Gary Collins, much of his time, predictably, is being spent on mending bridges and fixing rifts. And if anyone from Toronto is reading this, have you any idea about what happenned to Amborzac’s right hand lieutenant and mouthpiece, Suzanne Scorsone? Let me tell you, those two were a match made in platonic heaven.

      • JFWilder

Who cares what the friggin Vatican says. They’re irrelevant.

      • Marianna

        @JFWilder
The Vatican may be irrelevant to you but there’s still plenty of us around interested,(not be confused with in agreement), in what the Vatican has to say.

    • Grumpster

So they were married in a church…who cares? Half those in there do things churches wouldn’t approve of anyway, including the pedofiles that run them.

Time to put the Vatican and their like to pasture as an outdated thought pattern and culturally stagnant group of old farts and funny-dressers.

      • Valerie

Couldn’t have said it better!! The Vatican is OUTDATED in ALL areas. They also store the largest collection of s*x material anywhere!! LOL–

  • paisley

Yeah, gestational carrier is sooo cold and clinical, one must wonder…what is the deal?

  • j.Mellon

I have read and heard Nicole say she has had many problems both conceiving and carrying to term, so I’m thinking this was for safety. But as others have stated, none of anyone’s business.
As for word choices, remember they are Aussie! And it is technically the right term.

    • allie

      ok, good point.

  • dee123

    Good to see Kidman happy.

  • susan

All that crap about how badly she wants to just stay home and be a mother and she’s in Hollywood at parties and award shows not even a month after the baby is born? Most mothers I know can barely leave their baby long enough to go to work for 8 hours much less leave for days.

    • chris

quit judging other people’s parenting skills. It reeks of petty moralism.

  • amy

I love the name Margret. I was going to use that one….but had all boys instead. I am very happy for these two kids! Way to do it on your terms..avoid the media hassle..and keeping your family and your surrogate safe. I think celebrities going foward could learn a thing or two from how Nicole and Keith handled this situation.

  • Rocky

So what you’re essentially saying is that Tom Cruise’s two oldest children have a new sibling? That may or may not have just blown my mind.
