Courtney Love’s Twitter feed has gotten her in trouble again — only this time, it’s not the tabloid type of trouble. (Well, not exclusively.) Love is now facing a defamation lawsuit brought by designer Dawn Simorangkir, which claims that Love’s March 2009 Twitter tirade against her damaged her reputation and career. This marks the first high-profile defamation case based on a celebrity’s Twitter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Love’s tweets … announced that Simorangkir was a drug-pushing prostitute with a history of assault and battery who lost custody of her own child and capitalized on Love’s fame before stealing from her. ‘She has received a VAST amount of money from me over 40,000 dollars and I do not make people famous and get raped TOO!’ Love wrote.” The tweets have since been deleted.
The trial begins Jan. 18.

And Boom goes the dynamite
I adore Love and her drug-induced twitter rants!
Ms Love has shoved her way thru life and trampled anyone who dare got in her way. I wouldn’t go back on Etsy, let alone the Boudoir Queen’s site, because I dislike these conflicts so avoid them. Yes, it DID make me wonder about the Boudoir Queen, and I also wouldn’t do business with her for fear of retribution from Courtney Love. Hopefully Ms. Simorangkir will win and be able to change careers entirely. AND change her name! She might even want to MOVE!
So maybe all that stuff is really true that Courtney said. I believe Courtney. Why would she say those things if they weren’t at least mostly true, because she knows she could get sued. The Etsy woman probably is a crook. Too bad for the other decent vendors on Etsy.
I want to get famous if only so I can get close enough to Courtney Love to piss her off.
Curious which it is: Courtney now says $40,000 is a “vast amount of money” but not long ago (on Twitter) Courtney had her wanna-be high-falootin’ nose in the air and sniffed that “$30,000 is my pocket change”…… I kid you not! Such a money-grubbing low-life! All of this recent stuff is due to the fact she wanted the Boudoir Queen to work for her FREE, on an on-going basis! Unbelievable.
Well, judging from what she said, looks like there are grounds for a defamation lawsuit
If this lawsuit wins, it sets a dangerous precedence in online comments protected as freedom of speech. Twitter is just random rantings done at spur of the moment that keeps it fresh. To actually believe rants as actual fact is to be incredibly naive.
Freedom of speech has never protected slanderous comments. If it did, there would be no basis for any slanderous lawsuit as they are all speech. Whether the media be spoken, written or typed, you never have a right to slander another person.
your people who keep “feeding” this “stars” are what is keeping them in the light.. just ignore the ones that are idiots..
It’s Courtney Love……..due the math. I sympathize with Dawn, but it is too bad she feels the need to spend her hard-earned money on this drivel.
hmmm. wish i could read the tweets
This case is likely to have significant ramifications for protecting reputations tarnished by defamatory material published on the internet worldwide. Following the recent passing of the Speech Act in the US, it has become more difficult for a US citizen to bring a defamation action in another country unless it can be established that a US Court would have entertained similar proceedings. If Dawn Simorangkir is successful in her case, it will immediately improve the prospects for suing US based internet service providers in the UK and other European countries. At present, US and offshore ISPs can effectively publish whatever they like with impunity.

Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
