'Millennium Trilogy' actor feared dead after fire

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

Per Oscarsson, an award-winning Swedish actor who played a small role in the Millennium film trilogy based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novels, is feared dead after a fire torched his home near Skara, Sweden, according to AFP. He and his wife, Kia, were believed to be home at the time of the blaze, and human remains have been discovered, though they’ve yet to be identified. The cause of the fire was unknown.

Oscarsson played Holger Palmgren, Lisbeth Salander’s late lawyer and guardian, in The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. The 83-year-old Oscarsson began making films in the 1940s, and he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes film festival for his role in Hunger (1966).

Update: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Swedish police have located the burned remains of a second body in the ruins of the fire that destroyed Oscarsson’s home. Forensic tests on both bodies could take several days, but the discovery of a second body increases fears that the remains will prove to be Oscarssen and his wife, who’ve not been seen since the New Year’s Eve disaster.

    That is so sad.

    • forrest

      who?

  • Lola

It’s sad but why report on a Swedish actor who is unknown in the US and only played a small role in a Swedish movie trilogy that wasn’t even succesful in this country.

    • CTesdahl

Your right. Only American actors should matter obviously

      • Lola

Eh, m*rons. I never said non-Americans don’t matter. But this wasn’t a known actor (and his winning the best actor award at Cannes isn’t all that, just look at the list of winners). Not everyone’s death is worth mentioning on the EW site, imagine how crowded this site might get. (as a matter of fact they might consider the reality sh!t, too). Ever heard about relevance? And you all might want to learn how to spell, I know how to in three languages, so I’m not as uneducated as you think I am (or as YOU are), heh? By the way I was the only one who was sorry about his passing, you just went into a rage. P.S.: So Nanam, are you saying Sweden isn’t the West? How about some geography lessons, loser. Happy New Year!

      • ulyti

@Lola – anyone who defends their intelligence on a comments section is incredibly insecure. And pointing out spelling errors is original, your parents must be so proud of you. Do you want a gold star?

      • M

Parents give out gold stars now?… Just messing with you.

      • mechanicsnazi

Lola, you polyglotal orthographical whiz, you may want to read up on the subject of comma splices, you pack about four into each post.

Helpful Hint: There’s a comma splice in my post here.

      • Betty

Lola … You are heartless !

      • Asuigeneris1

…bit presumptuous for you to assume that no one in the Euro countries read from this site isn’t it Lola?

      • Donna

@Lola You sounded like an idiot with your first post. The second post confirmed it. Per Oscarsson is more relevant to this website, even dead, than you will ever be.

    • Erin in USA

What a closed minded nationalistic twit you are! Way to start off the year Lola, apathetic and dumb as a stump…

    • not american

Perhaps because this site is not read by only americans? Or are you unaware of how internet works? And I guess you didn’t notice that little bit of winning the best actor award in Cannes (even though it was a long time ago). There is a whole world beyond your borders, why not explore it a bit, instead of getting annoyed that you have to read about some foreign actor dying. Oh bohoo, you.

      • Eolra

*I* am also not American, for the record.

      • Amelia

I’m live in Sweden and I visit this site frequently so..

      • Amelia

        I live..*

    • jules

Lola, defensive much? Go back and re-read your original post, and maybe you will see why so many were put off. Not all of us in the States live in a “Twilight” and/or “Glee” stupor.
      Speak for yourself.

    • Terra King

Because everyone deserves to be acknowledged. Even if they only did a small part, they are still an actor.

    • Skash

EW means “Entertainment Weekly”, not “American Entertainment Weekly”. Xenophobic much?

You may not have known who he was, but he played a role in a movie that IS popular in this country. Just because most Americans are terrified of subtitles doesn’t mean that we all are. For fans of the Larsson books/movie adaptations, this is a blow.

Oscarsson played the role of Palmgren wonderfully; even though it was a small part, he really managed to evoke the character.

    • luppy

If you’ll notice, Lola, you misspelled the word “successful” in your original post, and your comma splices are horrendous. Also, I’m trying to figure out what you were talking about when you said that the other comments had spelling errors in them. I don’t see any spelling errors in the other comments that were posted. The only spelling error I see is yours. :)

      • Brenda

I think she’s talking about “your” right which I wouldn’t deem so much a spelling error as a grammatical error. Add them to the millions who don’t know the proper use of your and you’re.

    • Bob

      Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola…But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man…and so is Lola…

    • rain

this item is #4 on the “Today’s Most Popular” list on the website, so apparently people are interested.

    • ron mcloughlin

      How provincial can U get?

    • erik ehst

Because he’s a beautiful human being who loved his wife, had an acting career that some will rediscover; im sure his Trilogy friends are saddened by his passing!

    • DavidXevon

And when it happens – I doubt that your death will be reported here, Lola, which will sadly not give us the opportunity to dance a jig and celebrate the exeunt of one more oxygen thief.

    • ummmm

not only are the books popular. But the us is working on a film of the first book

    • buddy

      Dear Lola –
      Buy locally. Think internationally.

    • peachez2

Lola you are the m*ron. The show was successful even though it was shown in unlimited cinemas in the US. In fact, it was received so well that Hollywood is planning a remake in the English version, with American stars. I would like to see what they would do with it, because Americans tend to butcher remakes, IMO. I loved the Swedish version, and you sound like an American snob, who would think their poo is better than others.

      • Lu

Human beings died…it’s sad, no matter what Continent you’re from. Too much ado about Lola…she’s just one heartless individual…. That said…. Americans in general seem to fear subtitles…not sure why! Is it that they can’t keep up! Seriously! It’s the reading!
Sadly, good foreign movies don’t get a fair showing, I believe due to the general public not liking subtitles.
I also agree that American remakes tend to butcher good movies. Lastly, I’m waiting for the movie “The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest” to come to Cable; that’s how I saw the first two. I read and enjoyed the books first. I’m an American who enjoys a good movie and subtitles don’t scare me and I’m not a snob. Peace

  • Nanam

Wrong! Millennium trilogy books and films are successful in the West. I for one am a fan.
It is indeed sad if true.

    • ks

I am too, this is very sad for his family friends and fans.

      • Betty

Lola … I hope people show you the same disrespect when you kick the bucket. Just an atrocious comment. Horrible !

    • Lu

I loved Stieg Larsson’s 3 books and have seen and enjoyed the first 2 Swedish movies with subtitles. Can’t wait for the 3rd movie…Swedish version, I thought they were very well done; subtitles don’t scare me…sadly it scares those that can’t keep up. Movies were true to the books. I’m saddened how these threads go off on irrelevant, rude comments. A human being died!
Rest his soul. East Coast USA

  • Lola Hater

Lola – You’re an f***in’ moron! What if something like that happened to someone you cared about?

    • Lola

      I hate you, too! ;)

      • DTour

I completely understand you Lola, seriously she’s right. Lola wasn’t downplaying the tragedy, rather making a fair point about relevance of some EW articles- what should and shouldn’t be reported in terms of Entertainment news.

      • Kentucky Gentle Man

the people who comment on the entertainment weekly online site are some of the dumbest people in the world. No one has ever raised any point worth mentioning. Work on that this year.
        Thanks Y’all

      • etm

        @Kentucky Gentle Man,
        Present company excluded right?

      • Donna

@DTour (aka LOLA) So EW should only be reporting on “REAL” celebrities like Kanye, Lady Gaga, Lindsey Lohan, Justin Beiber, Paris Hilton, and the Jersey Shore thugs? And EW should only be reporting on what YOU find interesting? You’re still an idiot.

  • m1

Oh goodness. I hope he’s okay.

  • whatevs

Geez, you people are mean. Your attacks don’t make you better people than Lola.

  • Jesse

You all realize Lola is a sad, pathetic troll with nothing better to do and you’re all making this sad excuse of a human being happy by responding. Just ignore them.

Very sad to hear about Oscarsson..so tragic.

  • BT

One of the reasons I subscribe to the print publication and regularly visit this site is for access to information about the many dedicated creators of arts and entertainment, and not just the “relevant” ones commonly discussed everywhere.

  • Alchie Collins

Actors die routinely and don’t get a mention in EW.

Why mention this guy? Oh, he’s European. Feel sophisticated now?

  • polecat

    Eh, Lola is right.

Tragic, but still…it must have been a slow news day.

  • Linney17

For heaven’s sake, don’t read it if you’re not interested. Problem solved.

    • Stevex

Linney, thanks so much for introducing some sanity into this forum. Lola and the like remind me of those uppity groups of ‘parents’ who complain about objectionable TV programs, but seem to have forgotten how to use the remote.

  • Lolita

I agree. Anyway, speaking of older men… ;)

(I wonder if anyone on this site would get this? Probably not, considering Katherine Heigl wasn’t in the movie version/the book wasn’t written by Chuck Palinuk.)

    • Quilty

The original film adaptation of Lolita was directed by Stanley Kubrick. I’m sure many people who read EW would know about the film. Lolita is also taught in many colleges. Not that obscure of a reference. In any case, sad to hear about Oscarsson’s death.

  • Lola Licker

Great Movies Great books the characterHolger was essential To Lisbeth Salander Beuatiful casting i must find his 1966 Cannes winner movie

    • Lisa Simpson

Yes, Plamgren may have been a small role, but it’s an important one and Oscarsson was perfect for it. So sad to hear of this tragedy.

  • dee123

And people wonder why Americans are always thought of as insular…..

  • jeff

At least it wasn’t a main charcter. The head wizard in Harry Potter died and was replaced with a new actor and no one seemed to mind. Still, sad he died.

    • sashay

What do you mean, no-one seemed to mind? You think we didn’t notice that Richard Harris was gone? Speak for yourself, Jeff. It’s always noted and grieved when an accomplished actor passes away.

      • Lu

No one is insignificant! Not Per Oscarsson…nor Richard Harris… Richard Harris will be missed too! He’s a legend….he was an accomplished stage actor first, who starred in many great plays before making movies. I loved him…I may not know Oscarsson as well…but I’m certain he’s got a following too, in his own right.
