'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' loses a lead actress: report

Filed under: News and tagged:

Natalie Mendoza, one of the lead actresses in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, is negotiating an exit from the Broadway show, The New York Times reports. Mendoza, who plays Arachne, a spider villainess created by the show’s director, Julie Taymor, has not performed since Dec. 20. The Times says the production has explained her absence as a doctor-ordered vocal rest, but hints that she was badly shaken by the fall her cast mate and friend Christopher Tierney suffered on Dec. 20. Mendoza herself sustained a concussion during the Nov. 28 performance when she was struck in the head by a rope holding equipment while standing offstage. Arachne, a role which involves slower-speed flying sequences, is instrumental to the show’s plot, and delivers its title song and sings on five others. Representatives for Mendoza and the production have not confirmed her departure, but are said to be working on an official announcement. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is set to open Feb. 7.

'Million Dollar Money Drop': Fox invites couple back

Filed under: News, TV and tagged:

Fox has invited Gabe Okoye and Brittany Mayti, contestants on the Dec. 20 debut of game show Million Dollar Money Drop, for another shot. On Thursday, the network admitted they had “incomplete information” about the answer to a question about whether Post-it Notes or the Sony Walkman had been sold in stores first. (The couple’s answer, Post-it Notes, was deemed incorrect on the show and the couple lost $800,000. On the next question, they lost their remaining $80,000 and were eliminated.) According to a statement from Fox, “As a result of new information we have received from 3M, we feel it is only fair to give our contestants, Gabe and Brittany, another shot to play Million Dollar Money Drop even though this question was not the deciding question in their game.” [CNN]

Elton John and David Furnish welcome baby boy

Elton-John-FincherImage Credit: Dave M. Benett/Getty ImagesNearly four decades ago, Elton John sang about a man who “was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day” in his classic hit “Levon.” That song has now proved prophetic: EW has confirmed US Weekly‘s report that Sir Elton and his partner, David Furnish, welcomed a baby boy on Dec. 25. Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born via surrogate in California, weighing 7 lbs. 15 ozs. and measuring 22 inches long. The birth comes a year after John and Furnish attempted to adopt a young Ukrainian boy but were denied by that country’s government. The pair were joined in a civil partnership ceremony in England in 2005. Together they produced the upcoming animated film Gnomeo & Juliet, which will be released on Feb. 11.

LeAnn Rimes, Eddie Cibrian engaged

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged:

LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian got engaged over the holidays, her rep tells People. Rimes, 28, sported a large diamond ring on a Malibu beach Monday. During a sitdown with ABC’s Robin Roberts that aired last month, the couple, who met filming the Lifetime movie Northern Lights while both were married, said they hoped the fact that their romance continued a year and a half later could turn their affair from a tabloid story to a love story. Both Cibrian, 37, and Rimes, however, said they wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t: “Well, I can’t change their minds. Nothing I’m going to say is gonna change it. I do know that, and I have accepted that,” Rimes said when asked how she’d respond to people who consider her a homewrecker. “It happens every day to so many people. And if I take away my album sales, my awards, and you have just another couple — you have two couples whose marriages didn’t work, who really stumbled upon each other and fell in love. And never ever was I thinking of hurting someone.”

Cibrian shares custody of two sons, 7 and 3, with his ex, Brandi Glanville. Rimes’ ex, Dean Sheremet, announced his own engagement last month.

Olympic documentarian Bud Greenspan dies at 84

Filed under: News, TV and tagged: ,

Bud Greenspan, the famed filmmaker who documented the Olympics through self-proclaimed rose-colored glasses for more than six decades, died Dec. 25 of complications from Parkinson’s disease, his companion Nancy Beffa told the Associated Press. He was 84. “I think I’d rather spend 100 percent of my time on the 90 percent that’s good,” he once said of his choice to chronicle stories of triumph over tragedy rather than scandal. “This is almost religious in concept when the athletes go onto the field, they do it for honor or country…. I think the politics of the Olympics has sort of dissipated what the ethereal aspects were, and that is to enter the arena, make the attempt, and pursue excellence.” Greenspan also wrote and directed Wilma, the 1977 TV biopic of U.S. sprinter Wilma Rudolph, which featured the screen debut of Denzel Washington.
