John Mellencamp, 59, is separating from his wife Elaine after 20 years, the singer-songwriter’s rep Bob Merlis tells the Associated Press. Merlis says the couple ”are proud of their 20 years together and are very happy with their accomplishments both as parents and as a family.” He would not confirm if the couple were officially divorcing.

It’s kinda of sad reading this news while listening to John Mellencamp on Craig Ferguson. Gives a new depth to the lyrics of his song.
John can be a jerk at times, but I too find this sad. They really were lovely together.

They were an awesome couple. She was by his side through a heart attack. I believe she was his creative influence as well. He may not have radio-friendly hits anymore, but his best music is from 1991 – 2011. Together they have 2 boys. I only hope it is amicable for the kids’ sake.
My dad was her H.S. principal, many, many years ago. He remembers her as being very pretty as well as nice, and has always thought it cool that he knew her before she was “Mrs. Mellencamp.” What a shame. Hopefully it is mutual and not because JCM is going the Kelsey Grammar route.
He must be going nuts over that. According to his former manager Billy Gaff, John was a real hard case during his wholesome “Farm Aid” days. Gaff said (quoting here) “John would murder his mother for a hit record.” O_O
This is sad – with the rash of celebrity divorces lately, I was just wondering about them – thinking how successful they have been.
I live in Indiana and there was an article in one of the local papers that the earthquake we had here yesterday scared him into action on the split. Oooooookay John.
