Mark Zuckerberg pledges to give away half his fortune

Facebook co-founders Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz have pledged to give away half of their fortunes to charitable causes. The Giving Pledge is a philanthropic effort initiated by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett that began in June and now includes 57 generous donors, including Ted Turner, George Lucas, and Michael Bloomberg. In a statement, Zuckerberg, who recently donated $100 million to the public school system in Newark, N.J., said, “People wait until late in their career to give back, but why wait when there is so much to be done?”

    Good for him!

Agreed. Good for him. :) He’ll still have a couple billion left, so it’s not like he’ll be feeling the pinch, but that’s still a really nice thing to do.

These guys have all made these huge pledges, Gates, Buffett included. For what I must ask? I understand the philosophical concept of charity and philanthropy; but aside from only being taxed on 1/2 of their income it’s got to go deeper than just wanting to help. I don’t wish to be jumped on for an opinion, and I’m not saying that I wouldn’t give back, I give with nothing now. There seems to be something more to it.

I’m sure there is more to it. Either way, it is extraordinary the amount of money they can donate regardless of whether it is a completely selfless act or not. Besides is any good deed entirely selfless? Wish more wealthy people would step up.
