Monica Johnson, 'Modern Romance' screenwriter, dead

Screenwriter Monica Johnson — who co-wrote Modern Romance, Real Life, and Lost In America with Albert Brooks — passed away in Los Angeles after a battle with esophageal cancer, Deadline reports. She was 54 years old.

Along with writing films like The Muse and Mother, the award-winning screenwriter also worked with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Laverne and Shirley, and served as a consultant on It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.

Brooks issued the following statement regarding Johnson: “Monica Johnson was an extraordinary person. Funny, smart, and so much fun to work with. The world has lost a great sense of humor.”

Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White reteaming on 'Hot in Cleveland'

Emmy-winning actress Mary Tyler Moore will reunite with former co-star Betty White on the second season premiere of TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. The episode will mark the first time in 33 years that Moore will have appeared on screen with her Mary Tyler Moore co-star since the show’s series finale. Though exact plot points are mum for the moment, Moore will be involved with White’s character, Elka, who was arrested at the end of last season.

Shane Sparks ordered to trial on eight sex counts

America’s Best Dance Crew judge and choreographer Shane Sparks has been ordered to trial on sex charges, the Associated Press reports. Sparks faces eight sex counts — including six counts of lewd acts on a child and two counts of oral copulation of a person under 16 — related to an incident in the late 1990s involving an underage girl. The choreographer was arrested back in December; his arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 15.

James Nesbitt and Adam Brown join 'The Hobbit'

James Nesbitt and Adam Brown have been cast in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. According to a statement from the director, Nesbitt (Millions) will play Bofur, “a funny and occasionally brave dwarf.” Newcomer Brown will portray Ori, a member of the team of dwarves battling the dragon, Smaug.

Bill Maher: Zach Galifianakis didn't smoke real joint

Seconding what reps for Zach Galifianakis and HBO told EW on Monday, Bill Maher took time during his discussion of midterm elections with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last night to reiterate that Galifianakis did not light up a real joint on his show, Real Time with Bill Maher, Friday night. “If it was a real joint, Wolf, I would have smoked it … I think it was cloves or something,” Maher said, adding “Zach’s crazy, he’s not that crazy.”

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller file for divorce

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller officially filed dueling divorce petitions on Monday, according to People. Both claim irreconcilable differences as the cause of the split and point to last Christmas’ ugly fight in Aspen as the beginning of their current separation. The couple, who married in 2008, have twin 20-month-old sons.

Young Broadway star Shannon Tavarez dies

According to People, 11-year-old Broadway singer Shannon Taverez passed away after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Tavarez, who played young Nala in The Lion King until her April diagnosis, had won fans like Rihanna and Alicia Keys who both fought unsuccessfully to get her a needed bone transplant.

'Hangover 2' adds Jamie Chung

Jamie Chung has been cast as Ed Helms’ fiance in The Hangover 2, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Chung, who got her start on The Real World: San Diego, was most recently seen in Grown Ups. In the first film, Helms’ character Stu married Heather Graham’s character Jade during the pals’ wild night in Las Vegas, but Graham isn’t returning for the sequel. The Hangover 2 is currently filming in L.A. and will shoot in Bangkok in the coming weeks.

Joel Edgerton joins Jennifer Garner in 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'

Joel Edgerton has been cast as the husband in The Odd Life of Timothy Green, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He’ll star opposite Jennifer Garner in the fantasy fable about a childless couple, desperate to conceive, who plants all of their wishes for a baby in a box in their backyard. The child who springs from their wishes is not what they may have expected. Peter Hedges (Dan in Real Life) will direct. Edgerton starred in the Australian movie Animal Kingdom.

Longtime 'Wheel of Fortune' announcer Charlie O'Donnell dies

Charlie O’Donnell died Monday in Sherman Oaks, Calif., at the age of 78, according to Variety. The announcer spent 28 years as the voice of Wheel of Fortune. He first began his career on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and would go on to work as an announcer on Oscar and Emmy telecasts.
