Robert De Niro to receive DeMille lifetime achievement award at Golden Globes
Robert De Niro, two-time Oscar winner and the man who portrayed such indelible big-screen characters as the young Don Corleone, Travis Bickle, and Jake La Motta, will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at next year’s Golden Globes. The honor was announced today by Kevin Spacey. The award will be presented to De Niro at the 68th annual Golden Globes on Jan. 16. Previous winners include Barbra Streisand, Al Pacino, Michael Douglas, Steven Spielberg, and last year’s recipient (and frequent De Niro collaborator) Martin Scorsese.
'Bones' spin-off episode delayed
The episode of Bones that will plant the seed for a potential spin-off is still a go, but production on it has been moved from December to early 2011, Fox confirms to EW. News of the delay was first reported by Michael Ausiello, whose source told him “creative reasons” were to blame. Fox would not comment on the cause of the schedule change, but Bones creator Hart Hanson did type a telling (and humorous) tweet on Nov. 4 that said, “I received studio notes on the Bones spin-off idea. They want it to be better. Unreasonable taskmasters. Impossible dreamers. Neo-platonists.” The episode will introduce tracker Walter Sherman, the central figure in “The Locator” novels by Richard Greener. In the books, Sherman is a Vietnam vet, but in the Bones world, Sherman will be a former military policeman who served in Iraq with Booth (David Boreanaz). Just as Booth didn’t originally get along with socially-challenged Brennan, he and Sherman — who suffered brain damage overseas that left him “skeptical of every statement” — will butt heads. Brennan, on the other hand, will be fascinated by him. Fox confirms the casting of Sherman is underway.

GLAAD President responds to Ron Howard's explanation/defense of 'The Dilemma'
Last week, in response to the outcry over the use of the word “gay” in the trailer for his upcoming comedy The Dilemma, director Ron Howard defended the use of the line in the movie, noting, “I believe in sensitivity, not censorship.” Now, the President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has responded to Howard. Writing to Patrick Goldstein at the L.A. Times, Barrios notes, “GLAAD is not a censor. We’re here to educate. It’s not ‘censorship’ when someone tells you that your behavior is causing harm and you decide to stop doing it.”
Barrios compares the “gay” joke in Dilemma to a similar joke on The Office: “The Office used a gay context to find humor in the ignorance of what was being said, rather than making a joke at the expense of all gay people … In no way is the audience meant to identify with Michael and Dwight. The audience is meant to find their behavior absurd.” Barrios also ties the Dilemma controversy to the recent media coverage of anti-gay bullying: “Recent events have made it abundantly and tragically clear the effect that anti-gay language and attitudes can have on young people who are gay or are perceived to be gay AND on the bullies who target them.”
