'Spartacus: Blood and Sand': Aiden Turner, Liam McIntyre on short list to replace Andy Whitfield

Tags: TV

Deadline reports three actors are in the running to replace Andy Whitfield as the title character in Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Stephen Amell (The Tracey Fragments), Aiden Turner (All My Children), and Liam McIntyre (The Pacific). Whitfield had left the series earlier this year to resume cancer treatment. (The actor, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March, was in remission before dropping out.) The series will return to Starz in January.

Gross, not Aiden Turner. I won’t watch!
What happened to Wentworth Miller? He would’ve gotten fresh viewers for the series.

Wentworth Miller is awful. Best to go with an unknown.

    • Ryan

Wentworth did fine on Prison Break, but I don’t feel he has the acting capability to carry this role. Andy Whitfield did a fantastic job and they need someone of that caliber to replace him.

    • Delon

Definitely not Aidan Turner. Yikes.Based on looks alone i’d say Stephen Amell, but i’ve got a feeling that it’s gonna be Liam McIntyre.

  • Maximus

Sorry, but neither one of them won’t do it for me. After googling them on IMDB I have to say that I’m not convinced that one of these guys has the special “gladiator gene”. Good looks alone is definitely not enough! Please wait for Andy to get well and let him continue his great work (whishful thinking, I know!!)

I hate to break this to you, but waiting for Whitfield to “get better” is a pipe dream. He’s being eaten up by cancer! If he recovers (and that’s a BIG “if”) it’d be years before they could resume filming. And by then he’d be pushing 40 and emaciated from his sickness. Odds are that he will not recover at all.

So please…enough of this “Wait For Whitfield” mentality. Recasting the role was the only call Starz could have made. Either that, or cancel the series altogether.

Really nice, very thoughtful comments. Truth or not – grow some compassion! People fall in love with characters as much as the story line — so give people a break and be considerate of Mr, Whitfield’s and the really tough time he must be facing. I am sure whoever they choose — fan will give them a chance — but it’d had better be good or that show is going to be kaput

ur discusting the way r cruel and ugly ur fate will be worse than his…i hope

dude or dudette.. that was really harsh. this aint a batman or spiderman role. just chill. andy is an awesome actor and whats happening to him no one wishes for or wishes on anyone. that really was not the way to answer that question. hope you never lose someone from cancer or know the battle to beat it.

    • spartacus99

I could not agree more. For all they Know he could get better andy is spartacus and owns the role.If they recast and he gets better i hope he will resume his role

  • MCS

i still think ausiellos pick of grant bowler was the best.

    • Erin

He’s hosting Australia’s version of the Amazing Race so it’s doubtful he could even take on a new role atm.

I liked Grant and I don’t mind Chris Vance either (he starred in an Aussie series where Andy had his first break). I doubt he’ll be sticking around Dexter for long – Surely Dex will kill him off very soon.

wentworth miller would have been good. He could easily get into shape, he didn;t look that out of shape in the new resident evil movie

  • Rob

In terms of the right “look” alone, Liam seems the best to me. I’m really not familiar with any of them as an actor though I must have seen Liam briefly on the couple of Pacific eps I saw.

  • BCA

If I had to pick out of the three, I’d go with Liam McIntyre. He has the more “gladiator” look about him. Plus he’s an Aussie which is as close to Andy as we’ll get I suppose ;)

    • valdar

aiden turner is a brit, and a FABULOUS actor. serve all my children right if he made good in a prime time show, after they fired him

  • The Devil

Whitfield resumed cancer treatments, not Whitman, EW.

  • Chele Belle

They should have went with Wentworth Miller. Actors gain muscle and lose weight all the time…and I am sure Mr. Miller could have did the same. Oh well.

  • Lesley

I love this show and SingleDoctorDating was Fantastic

  • Cheryl

Does recasting ever really work? I mean, with the exception of the two Darrins? I think they should have let this show’s single season stand alone in all its trashy, bloody glory, they’re not likely to top it. The last episode was fine as a series finale.

  • Bill

I think Liam should get the role.

  • Dee

I think Aidan, spelled with an a, Turner, who plays a vampire in Being Human, would be a better choice that Aiden with an e Turner

    • nick

dee. that show rocks too. good idea. but i like being human too much to lose him on that series.. great season 2 by the way, wouldnt you say ? but enough of that .. back to spartacus.. lol

  • ken

wentworth miller is a black guy, how could he play a thracian white dude…

  • Cool Hwip

Wentworth miller looked fine at the Res evil premiere. Besides , it ain’t hard to work with a personal trainer for 6 weeks.

And WTH has his race got to do with it? He’s a mixed race guy who looks white than black , not that it matters.

Wentworth Miller is a TERRIBLE ACTOR. A VOID of charisma. I would have quit if they gave the role to him. Terrible idea. I love how just about everybody agreed that this was a terrible idea, yet now with replacements named, people are naysaying these guys. Miller would have KILLED SPARTACUS. Prison Break was a misery BECAUSE Miller IS NOT a leading man–what makes you think this show would have survived the breathy delivery of his lines.
