AMC renews 'The Walking Dead'

AMC has renewed its zombie frightfest, The Walking Dead, for a 13-episode second season. Since premiering in Mad Men‘s Sunday night timeslot on Halloween, the Frank Darabont-produced series has reached more adults 18-49 than any cable show in history. The premiere drew a total of 5.3 million viewers.

Totally excited that it got renewed! Although I wonder… why not just order more episodes for season 1?

    • Ally

Production probably takes too long and they probably wouldn’t have the episodes ready in time, there are only like 3 episodes left this season I think? But yayyy glad it got renewed!

      • Bfleet

There are a total of 6 episodes in season 1. Two have aired thus far, so we still have 4 more to look forward to!

    • Tarc

The star being from the UK probably presents the need for a little lead time for the paperwork…

      • Joe

not necessarily… any contract for a tv show would include clauses for more episodes for the season as well as commitments for additional seasons. I read an interview somewhere with an actor who said doing a pilot for a tv show means committing the next 5 years of their life.
More than likely for this season it ends with a good cliff hanger for the end of a season so they’d rather just start off with another season.
Hands down this show is the best new original tv show this season so far. Not looking forward to the 5 or so clones that’ll popup on the other networks next year. Pretty hard to come up with original story lines with a zombie theme…

      • Jill

Well, it’s not “original”, it is based on a comic book…

      • yepyep

it might not be an original idea, but the way they have played it out and the direction, is a lot better than many shows out there. I love this show its original to tv that its not a movie we have it to look forward to every week.
I never heard of the comic books so i had to go digging and found them so now I await their arrival in the mail.

  • megan

Thats great but will we have to long for the second season. I’m guessing it’ll premire October 2011

    • ks

I know, this is how a show looses it’s viewers. Long wait times between Half and full seasons

  • Christian

You mean any cable scripted show in history. Sad to say that MTV’s Jersey Shore regularly posted above a 3 in the 18-49 demo.

    • Breckster82

seeing as how 3 is lower than 5.3, i don’t see the need for the “scripted” qualifier

      • Bfleet

He said a 3 in the demo. The Walking Dead posted a 2.7 for episode 1 and a 2.5 for episode 2.

Also, it should read scripted BASIC television show, as TrueBlood (and Sopranos before that, and I’m sure others) have had much higher demo ratings as well.

      • Bfleet

        *scripted basic cable

      • Drew

5.3 was the total number of viewers, not the number of 18-49 year-olds that matter most to advertisers. Jersey Shore gets more 18-49 year-olds.

      • Breckster82

        my bad! thanks for clarifying

    • Mary Ann Chandler

Believe me, all reality shows are scripted.

      • Richie

Not all – that’s a generalization – most, but certainly not all

        Scripted and garbage.

  • Jan

I wish that AMC would make an announcement to renew Rubicon too.

    • B

Me too, Jan. I hope they realize separate genres require separate considerations. I have zero interest in zombies and gore – though obviously a lot of people do. My hope is that with the money they’ll make on Walking Dead, they’ll be willing to also keep a show like Rubicon that is a smaller draw. If we lose Rubicon, there will be next to nothing left of its type.

      • Kelly

According to a casting call site, Rubicon WAS renewed. I don’t know why there has not been an official announcement though.

    • ks

      I agree I like Rubicon

    • Britt

Same here. I really hope AMC gives Rubicon a chance to build an audience.

  • Michelle

It’s like Mad Men, True Blood, Dexter, Breaking Bad etc, seasons only run about 13 episodes, they probally already order a whole season before it aired and also YAY!

    • Michelle

never mind, I just found out season one is only 6 episodes, now I’m kinda bummed

      • Drew

Because of the budget and massive set requirements, they originally envisioned it as a “back-end series”, which means this first season was seen as a stand-alone mini-series, with the potential to turn it into a multiple-season series if it turned into a hit (which it did.)

  • Breckster82

given the premiere ratings, this was pretty much guaranteed. but still great news for a rainy monday!!

  • Sam Sammy

Hells yes!!! One of the best shows on t.v. already! After reading the comics, it just gets better and better!

  • MDS

Great news. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this show goes. I hope the numbers stay strong.

  • Dana

yippee any show that gives this old lady nightmares has gotta be good glad its a keeper

  • Mole

So does this mean next year that the Sunday 10pm timeslot will stream an uninterrupted 39 weeks of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, then Walking Dead? AWESOME!

Now AMC just needs to find an awesome early Spring series!

    • Chris Shifty

      They do.

      It is called The Killing.

  • Carrie Ann

I thought it was just a miniseries? I’m enjoying it so far, so as long as they keep it interesting, I’ll continue to watch.

  • pete

Its not all about brains. its about warm flesh, muscles, and guts. mmmmmm.

    • Charles

  • Loyal

AMC should try to acquire the rights to Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man. It would make for a killer 2 hour block of television.

I know DJ Caruso, Shia LaBeouf, and New Line were trying to turn it into a film. But much like The Walking Dead, it would work best as a television series. Y The Last Man ran for 60 issues which would be enough for 5 seasons of tv.

    • Nate

I would die from the awesome of back to back hours of The Walking Dead and Y:The Last Man on TV. Make it happen, AMC!

  • Zaidi

The problem is you see one zombie, you see them all. I find this show disturbing; particularly when it airs around the time I’m sitting down for dinner. I won’t be watching anymore. I only wish they had renewed Caprica instead of this mindless, rotting flesh and guts send-up.

    • Dave

First of all, who eats dinner at 10pm? Second, no one is forcing you to watch a show about zombies while you eat. Third, Caprica airs on a different network. Fourth, you’re stupid.

      • Chris

        hahaha love it

      • ZombiesRKool

        Loved your reply to Zaidi…
        “you’re stupid…” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

      • Sure Frank

Hey I eat dinner at 10 p.m. sometimes. Nothing wrong with a late dinner, especially if you get off of work late.

      • Ashley G.

Dave you are awesome, took the words right outta my mouth!

      • Ernesto

Hahaha Dave your reply made me spew my soda. Well said… well said

      • paul

i agree with you Dave, and this show is awesome, i look forward to watch this every week, i have been a zombie fan since the original,Dawn Of The Dead.Back when I was a youngster.. this is best series on tv, and one thing i cant believe is who the hell actually watches that crap show jersey shore what a waste of tv that is

    • ZombiesRKool

Really? Really? If you don’t like it, DON’T WATCH IT!

Different Networks. Caprica being canceled was stupid. The Walking Dead comes on at various times. You could always watch later. Or record it and watch when you choose. If we want quality series we have to support them.

    • Protaganis

If you think the focus is on the zombies, you miss the point of the show. They are scenery and environment, much like the ocean in “The Perfect Storm” in the end, the stories are about people trying to survive in a messed up world.

  • GimplyGump ☺

OK OK, I’ll bite the bullet. I’ll say the cheesy thought most are thinking.
    LONG LIVE THE DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Zombiedude

I eat dinner while watching Walking Dead. ITs a great way to end the night. Zombies rule and anything that sparkles dosent!
