Sally Field may play Aunt May in new 'Spider-Man' film

Sally-FieldImage Credit: Angela Weiss/Getty ImagesBrothers & Sisters star Sally Field is in early talks to play May Parker, the beloved aunt of Peter Parker, in director Marc Webb’s big-budget Spider-Man reboot, has confirmed. Martin Sheen is already lined up to play Uncle Ben in the movie, which Sony has set for release in July 2012. The superhero tentpole would mark the first major feature film role for two-time Oscar winner Field since 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. She joins a cast that already features Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Peter Parker/Spidey and Emma Stone (Easy A) as Peter’s love interest, Gwen Stacy.

Hopefully the story can live up to the cast they have managed to assemble for this film. I was unsure of this film but I’m looking forward to it now that I see the people they have landed to each part. I’m looking forward to who they cast for Mary Jane, Harry Osborne and J. Jonah Jameson (I hope the rumors of John Slattery are true!) .

  • PK

They should keep JK Simmons as J. Jonah.

    He was GOLD.

    • Marco

I agree!!He was perfect for that role.

    • Tom

If they can keep Judi Dench in Casino Royale, then they can keep JK Simmons.

      • TV/Movie Fan

JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson was the best cast actor in Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3. He was excellent in the role and they should keep him.

SO true. I thought the casting for Aunt May was perfection, too. I’m still not excited about this reboot.

Anyone else getting skeeved out by the idea that we could see Spiderman (or Batman, or Superman) movies done and re-done going forward ad-infinitum until it becomes more than obvious that nobody cares anymore then maybe just a couple more in case there was only temporary burnout? I kind of liked the Toby McGuire spidey, but honestly I’m going to have to start boycotting these movies at some point, cause they’re getting my shorts in a bunch. Do I need another Iron Man? Not really.

I am totally with you. These constant reboots are exhausting.

I mean, apparently Warner Bros are already planning a Batman reboot *after* Christopher Nolan finishes hit trilogy.

      Enough is enough.

      • Marc

I think you are mistaken with the Superman reboot Christopher Nolan is producing. It not 100% sure that the third installment will be the last.

      • PK

Some Warner honchos made mention that they will continue making Batman movies after Nolan is done, be it sequel or total reboot.

      • Terry

How exactly are reboots that don’t wait long “exhausting”? You don’t have to watch them. Hey, I gotta tell you something…did you know that at least 1 movie opens every week??? That’s over 365 films a year, man!!! You must be dead tired….

      • Brian

Was there ever a question about whether they would make more Batman movies? Of course they were going to continue after the Nolan films.

      • Brian

I do think superheroes can and should work like the Bond films though–loose continuity with different actors over time.

      • @Terry

So, in your world, 1 movie every week equals 365 films a year? If you’re going to be snippy and try to be witty, at least get your facts and math straight!

  • nodnarb

I do not see her in this role at all!

I really don’t know about this movie. They could have waited a couple of years. They could have made sequels with Tobey playing the adult, high school teacher Peter Parker. They could have made a sequel with a new actor like Batman Forever or Bond. They could have done a lot with Spider-Man. The thing about the reboot craze that gets me is it implies that the original film versions were not up to standard. Sometimes that is the case – Batman and Robin. But the Raimi Spider-Man films are very good children’s movies that adults can enjoy, too.

    • Tyla

Agreed. I’ve seen the teenage Peter Parker story. I don’t need to see it again.

yeah, ClassyBody plugin is great and it would be kinda nice to have a cuoolr focus on the actual content/post section (e.g. lighter cuoolr background than the rest of site) so all the other nav items, links and ads etc are not quite so distracting

I love Sally!!! She’ll be great! I just hope the story is good.

i love sally field…it isn’t really a reboot…it’s telling the spidey story from a high school…isn’t that what they did with smallville…and same with batman…i don’t see what the big deal is…it’s just exploring why these guys became the superheroes they are today…not really about rebooting the series.

  • Sam

Yes there were some things about the Raimi movies that I didn’t like (us old fashioned purists and the web-shooters… and more banter)but the important part was that besides Mary Jane (who had the personality of Gwen Stacy, the vixen wouldn’t have been matched the family friendly vibe)all the other characters were dead on. The whole package really was decades of Spidey rolled into a couple of hours. I have my doubts that anyone but a real fan can do that, and I haven’t heard about Marc Webb’s life-long love affair with Spider-Man.

  • Tom

I can’t think of a more unnecessary movie. A spiderman reboot? Really?!?! The kid was 18 in the first one. How much backstory can there be?

  • S. Pidey

    No, no, and NO!

  • Jean Guy Levesque

Too fat to be aunt may. Vive la Quebec!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jack

JK Must Stay!! He’s now the narrator of the CNBC Show TITANS – he has a great voice – just heard a clip of him telling the story of Donal Trump
