Spider-Man musical faces safety inspection

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , ,

The upcoming Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical has at least one more hurdle to clear before heading into previews November 14: a New York State Department of Labor safety inspection. According to the New York Times, “Under state law, shows like Spider-Man are not legally allowed to hold public performances until state inspectors review and approve special effects such as flying.” The $60 million production is under an additional investigation after one of its actors broke both his wrists after a slingshot-like stunt went awry during rehearsals.

This is one of the dumbest ideas for a musical ever. I hope I’m wrong and its a huge hit, but I have my doubts.

My question is, with virtually all the buzz around this show being so negative, who is egging the producers on to continue with it? I have little doubt that SOMETHING in Taymor’s staging will shock and awe us (especially with this revolutionary flying), but flying alone does not a worthwhile Broadway experience make.

Never doubt the rabidity of U2′s fans.
