'The Walking Dead' premiere attracts 5.3 million viewers

The Walking Dead certainly livened things up Halloween night: The zombie-centric series gave AMC its highest premiere ratings in history Sunday, pulling in 5.3 million viewers. Walking Dead attracted 3.6 million adults 18-49, 3.1 million adults 25-54, and 2.1 million adults 18-34. And the premiere didn’t just break records for AMC — it boasted the highest debut for any 2010 cable series among the 18-49 demographic. “It’s a good day to be dead. We are so proud of this series, its depth of storytelling and the remarkable talent attached,” Charlie Collier, AMC’s president, said in a press release. “As the network dedicated to bringing viewers the best stories on television, we are so pleased to have the opportunity with ‘The Walking Dead’ to raise the bar within this popular genre and continue our commitment to being the home of premium television on basic cable.”

Yes! There’s pretty much little to no chance of us not getting a Season 2 now.

Good news for those who were worried, although personally I expected the premiere to score high, I’m expecting pretty high next week as well, 3 million-ish at least.

    • Amanda Kiwinerd

So much for Ken Tucker’s prediction of 2 million. And you didn’t mention that 8.1 million watched if you count the second showing.

      • DW

Two million seems reasonable since that’s what AMC shows tend to average. This is phenomenal for them.

      • Rob

Really? That’s awesome. I watched both showings with two sets of people, and I loved it both times.

As for what the show might normalize to, I think 2.2-2.5 million for Season 1/2 seems reasonable if they maintain the quality. I’m being kind of reserved though, I’d like to say higher!

      • Snsetblaze

And there had to be another couple of million for the third showing at 1 a.m. which is when I watched.

      • Joe

annnnnnnddddddddd you just know every other network is putting in pilot orders for zombie themed tv shows. Hands down though, this was one of the best pilot’s I’ve seen in quite a long time.

      • UGH

Joe, I believe NBC had one ready to go a couple of years ago. It had Babylon in it’s title. I wouldn’t doubt if they try to resurrect that one.

    • Nicole

I purposefully promoted this show because I was afraid it would be cancelled. I think most die-hard zomb fans did the same, and basically AMC can thank us for that.

      • Joe

I never follow any news regarding pilot tv shows or watch previous / trailers. Hands down this is probably one of the best pilots I’ve ever seen. This show is no doubt going to be a massive hit, it was pretty well done.

    • wino

agree! glad that the initially interest and ratings are so high, it guarantees a full season adn maybe a season 2 pickup. loved the premier and cant wait for more!!

    • fredro

not bad for a show that cam on at 10pm

  • Chad

    First! Watched it, loved it!

Strength: 2 x 225 , 2 x 295 PR, 1 x 315 PRNot saying this is huge, but for me, it’s boiwlng my mind. Huge gains since I started CFE in June. I’ve seen a recent spike in Olympic lifts lately and I attribute it to a sharp focus on mobility, flexibility and most importantly, improved positioning and LOAD ORDERING. KStar is the bomb. Position + Purpose = Unmatchable Potential and Power. KStar

    Crap…not first. LOL

  • Mikaylah

I loved it. Great use of silence in the beginning, and throughout. Can’t wait for more!

Can’t be happier! Walking Dead is a great show. Here’s hoping they extend past the initial 6 episode 1st season. We need at least 12! Come on AMC!

    • Snsetblaze

Or at least a season of more than 6 episodes. Hopefully if AMC orders a new season, we will get at least 13 and hopefully 16 or more.

      • Desmo

I read somewhere that the next season would be thirteen episodes.

    • Hutchy

Man does AMC ever look dunb for not just odering the entire 13 ep 1st season, they actually thought there was a chance this show could tank? Given the talent involved and the comic that has won multiple Eisners? What were they thinking?

      • UGH

It’s not unheard of. The Office was only 6 in it’s first season.

      • jim

the office was only 6 episodes because it was based on the bbc series which are always usually 6 episode, less is more! but the us and a seeems to have lost the idea of art in tv …just flog it to death and make as much cash as possible f*** the quality and the fans they will just lap it up like puppies eating sick (lost 24 etc…) but agree walking dead quality so far

  • Zombie Jesus

I was frantically calling my friends bullying them into watching it. This show and Supernatural are the only good dramedy horror shows that I know.

    • Oh Yeah

You are so correct. Supernatural and the Walking Dead are the 2 best shows on tv.

  • DJ

It’s been renewed for a second season for about a month now.

  • Dorkophile

Ok, I’m really psyched, BUT I really hope the success of THIS show doesn’t somehow mean that Rubicon is less likely to get renewed. Is that possible or will they be judging Rubicon’s numbers and cost independently? Color me worried.

I am way too much of a wimp and a scaredy-cat to watch the level of gore and zombie creepiness that I’ve read is in this…but it sounds like an amazing show. I really wish I had the stones to watch it, but the max level of scariness I can handle is…M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs.

    • Nicole

Is this a serious comment? I think Shyamalan is scarier to watch than any zombie movie I’ve ever seen lol. The Walking Dead isn’t even scary, there’s really no “pop-out shock” moments that are typically associated with Zombs. You don’t have to worry about puking up your Koolaid because you jumped at the shock of a zombie busting out of no where. It’s no Dawn of the Dead let’s put it that way. Basically, you’re missing the show for nothing. Also, I hate Rubicon.

      • Katja

Hmm, well I tried replying but maybe my post was too long or something, because it’s not showing up. To summarize kind of briefly, then: I *was* serious, no one I know thought Signs was scary and they mocked me for my terror – so it’s nice to know it isn’t just me who’s scared during it!, I wasn’t actually worrying about “pop-out shock” moments (I don’t like them, but I read the recap and knew they weren’t in the show), it’s just that the scenarios depicted in the show sounded terrifying (zombies swarming guy on horse, guy escapes to tank and is trapped with another zombie in there, etc.), and I can’t handle gore so the number of splattery headshots (there was a tally in the recap) suggests that I would spend a lot of my time averting my eyes. But since you say it’s not actually that bad, maybe I’ll try looking up some clips from the show and see how it makes me feel.

      • Katja

And I don’t even have Dawn of the Dead or any other zombie movies as references because I’ve never seen a single zombie movie. Unless you count Signs, I’ve never even seen a single horror movie. I can’t even watch the trailers because they freak me out, so I’ve always figured this is just not the genre for me. :)

    • JC

I admit, I got creeped out too! Live in the second floor and when tree branch tapped on bedroom window, I got startled…its just not you, although I’m a huge fan of Zombie flicks, the whole premise has always scared me- not to mention the fact that I read on a blog if the rabies virus was somehow combined with a mutated form of influenza the effect would be the same as “28 Days Later” and “Quarantine!”

  • ryan

What is rubycon actually about that would make it a must for someone to catch up on demand for? This show was pretty good I caught the late show after midnight! Watching it at that time was like watching tv back before cable was really big. You know after midnight when they had some weird 60-70s movie on that was actually interesting to watch, just before the tv went to static or lines.

    • Dorkophile

Rubicon is about intelligence analysts and the indepedent agency they work for that provided information to the American government. Essentially, they work to analyze intelligence to anticipate and prevent terrorist activity throughout the world. There’s also a major conspiracy that affects most of the characters in the show. It’s a great show, and episode 1 is fast, but you have to get past 2-4ish that move a little slowly because there’s so much exposition and building. Worth it in the end though!

      • Bob in San Diego

Not to be too much of an AMC junkie – but IMO Breaking Bad is best show on TV, Mad Men/Walking Dead is top 5 and Rubicon is top 10 (this coming from someone who watches 12 shows on Thursday alone). I agree with Dorkophile – Rubicon is for sure worth the watch, I think it even had a better Season 1 then Mad Men.

  • jpratm

sweet its on my DVR cant wait to watch it !!!

  • KarlHall

    Woooohooo Season 2!!

Love the final scene with the zombies and tank – can I just say I was f**king scared out of my mind?!

And what do u think is going to happen to the black man and son (duane?)? All the zombies know where they live now!

    • Hutchy

If its anything like the comic…..they are gone. Not dead, just not a part of the storyline anymore.

      • Jace

It looks like they will be brought back for the show though. He gave him the radio(not in the comic, neither is that entire sequence) and they were featured more prominently as well.

I think that would be good, they are great characters and would round out the cast even more. The more the merrier if the characters are all this wonderful, as long as they see fit to give us more than 6 damn episodes!

      • cole

they do return in the comic, but not until much later on.

  • yepyep

(singing) I’m in the mood for loveeeee, but in more of a mooooood for zombieeeeeeeeees, thank you AMC for doing it righttttt, because Im in the mood for zombieeeeeeeeeees.
thank you thank you very much!!!

  • Avie

Great news. Awesome show. People are idiots if they don’t watch it.

  • chris

Looking forward to the upcoming episodes with Michael Rooker. He’s very under appreciated in his field in my opinion.
