NPR's CEO apologizes for handling of Juan Williams' dismissal
Vivian Schiller, CEO of NPR, released a statement, first reported on Politico, that expressed regret for the handling of the dismissal of news analyst Juan Williams, who was axed after saying on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor that he was nervous to fly on planes with Muslim passengers. “While we stand firmly behind that decision [to terminate our relationship with Williams], I regret that we did not take the time to prepare our program partners and provide you with the tools to cope with the fallout from that episode … Williams’ comments on Fox News last Monday were the latest in a series of deeply troubling incidents over several years. In each of those instances, he was contacted and the incident was discussed with him. He was explicitly and repeatedly asked to respect NPR’s standards and to avoid expressing strong personal opinions on controversial subjects in public settings, as that is inconsistent with his role as an NPR news analyst.”
