'The Bourne Legacy' coming in August 2012

The Bourne Legacy, the fourth installment in the action thriller series, will open in theaters on Aug. 3, 2012, Universal announced today. That’s a mere 644 days from now, so mark your calendars accordingly.

The Bourne Identity was released in the middle of June 2002, The Bourne Supremacy at the end of July 2004, and The Bourne Ultimatum the first weekend in August 2007. Each film grossed more money at the box-office than its predecessor, but that feat will be tested by the fact that Matt Damon will not star in Legacy.

Lions Gate sues billionaire Carl Icahn

Lions Gate has sued billionaire Carl Icahn for “secretly plotting” to merge the film studio with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, according to Bloomberg. The lawsuit alleges that Icahn, Lions Gate’s largest shareholder, became aware that the studio was in negotiations in June with two other studios. Concerned that any deal would minimize his own control, Icahn is accused of making false public statements to stall any deal until he could position himself for a greater profit. “He wanted to postpone [a merger with MGM] until he could buy as much of both companies as he could and thus extract for himself as much of the value stemming from the merger as possible,” Lions Gate stated in its complaint. Icahn, who currently owns about 33 percent of Lions Gate, had sued the company in July.

New Zealand parliament officially passes 'Hobbit law'

New Zealand’s parliament passed a law on Friday that will ensure one of Hollywood’s most anticipated film projects, The Hobbit, will indeed be shot in their country, according to Variety. By a 66-50 vote, the country’s legislative body amended an existing labor law — now being dubbed the “Hobbit law,” in reference to the film project — clarifying that film workers employed as independent contractors cannot also claim to be employees. The move stems from a 2005 case where a modelmaker at Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson’s workshop successfully sued for the right to be considered an employee rather than a contractor. This vote effectively ends the protracted battle over where Jackson would film his two upcoming Hobbit films.

President Obama's 'Daily Show' interview snags huge ratings

President Barack Obama’s visit to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show — which has set up shop in Washington, D.C., for the week in anticipation of host Jon Stewart’s rally tomorrow — drew 2.8 million viewers to the program Wednesday night, according to the New York Times. It was the first time a sitting president has appeared on the show and currently ranks as The Daily Show‘s third highest-rated episode ever, behind two episodes in October 2008 — one that featured then-candidate Obama and another that featured his wife, Michelle. Not surprisingly, of the 2.8 million viewers, 1.7 million of them — or a hefty 61 percent — were between 18 and 49, the advertiser-coveted demographic. So far this year, The Daily Show has been averaging 1.9 million viewers.
