Judge allows plagiarism suit against J.K. Rowling

A British lawsuit claiming that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling copied a 1987 book will be allowed to proceed, according to the AP. The estate of the late author Adrian Jacobs believes that Rowling plagiarized elements of Jacobs’ The Adventures of Willy the Wizard — No. 1 Livid Land. Rowling asked the court to dismiss the charge, calling the claims unfounded and absurd. 'Deadliest Catch' producer to turn cameras on West Virginia coal miners

Categories: Television

Thom Beers, exec producer of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, knows a good story when he sees it, which is why he’s teaming up with Spike TV for a docuseries on Cobalt Mine in Westchester, West Virginia to premiere in April. The network tells The Hollywood Reporter that the show, Coal, has been in development for nearly a year, and though they were prepared to announce the 10-episode deal weeks ago, they wanted to wait until the 33 miners in Chile were rescued. “Generations of families have been mining coal in the United States for nearly 300 years,” Beers told the trade. ”Coal miners risk their lives in a way no one can imagine. We finally get to tell their stories.” Beers’ other credits include History’s high-risk Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today in a statement that the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 “will not be significantly earlier than the now-traditional last Sunday in February.” The announcement comes after quite public speculation that the Academy might move the 2012 Oscars to as early as late January, in an effort to remain relevant in the face of the extended glut of awards shows that precede the Academy Awards. The Academy’s Board of Governors, however, did not rule out moving the ceremony in ensuing years, noting ”the Academy’s staff and Board will continue to evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with such a change.” The 83rd Oscars will air on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011.
