Interesting, but’s what’s up with Opie and the gays? Isn’t this the SECOND time he’s picked an issue here — in A Beautiful Mind he whitewashed the gay out of Prof. Nash’s life. Now this. Hmmm…does he protest too much?
When are we going to relax on our PC. It has gotten out of hand. It is a joke people. Are the people against this joke campaigning against Netflix for the movie “White Men Can’t Jump”, Mel Brooks and his brand of comedy and many others? These are jokes of unfortunate stereotypes, but they are jokes. There is no hard-core bashing of the gay community. You people are trying to make ALL our everyday life so PC and sterile that we are going to be robots with no diffences. It is those differences that make life interesting (hard at times, yes) not boring. But if this joke is such a concern, I hope you attack all non-pc jokes with the same fervor.
Funny? Non-offensive? If Vaughn’s character used the N-word as an adjective would you be so willing to ignore it? Pass it off as being too “politically correct”? Attitudes like this demonstrate to children that hate is acceptable as long as it done humorously. By his actions, Howard reveals the true homophobe that lives within.
If this was a “fat” joke nobody would give a care. Fat jokes can be as if not more insulting than gay jokes, let alone as throwing “That’s gay” around in a movie. People need to lighten up, I bet most of you criticizing Ron Howard for his decision find humor in movies that use stereotyping and fat jokes. I’ve heard FAR, FAR worse in movies and nobody has cared to stand up to lines/qoutes from any other movie. Lighten up people, I swear people just like to complain for the fact of complaining.
Sigmatau001…There has been various movies in which the N-word has been used by caucasians in a “funny” way and guess what??? NO ONE CARED. It’s all in the context. This country is full of prudes, who love to stir the pot. We have come a LONG way since the 60′s, and life in the melting pot will get better as time goes on(as it has already). I’m sure 50 years from now in America we will look back at this and laugh.
LightenupAmerica
I completely agree! For example, when I was in High School in the late 70′s/early 80′s, barely any one in my school “came out” of the closet. Flash forward to present day, my two kids who are both in high school are friends with many students who have openly come out, and our happy by doing so. That was never the case 30 years ago. In time things do get better for EVERYONE, Ron Howards choice to leave the quote in the movie is NOT going to take the gay and lesbian community back any steps. They are strong Americans and something as small as this should not be seen as a blow to them. Lets end the genocide going on in the world, if we ranted as much as we do on these posts and directed it towards the REAL problems in this world, we could all make a vast step-foward as a whole movement.
Good for you Opie!
I’m so sick of the PC world we have created, we slay one monster only to create another.Respect, commom sense and humor, lets try that for awhile, before we put oursleves in a box we will never get out of.
Ron Howard is right. It’s amazing we can have any conversation at all anymore with every single group taking issue with something. Get over it, if you don’t like it don’t watch it.
I am more mad at the censorship than the “gay” joke . If gladd cant take a joke they are in for a rough time no matter what this movie does. I mean they even admit its a joke. Someone should make them watch 10 seasons of southpark and they would realize how much of a non problem this is
As a gay man I really question the value of GLAAD.
Are you for real? This is absurd. Beyond absurd. Go back and watch movies like the Departed, with “homo” talk. But that was the character. I don’t take offense when a male character calls another male character a big girl. Attacking Ron Howard is hilarious. Why not attack shows and programming that is more damaging to everyone like the Jersey Shore?
This is absurd!
No one came out in force to protest when Finn called Kurt a f*g in Glee. Instead everyone talked about how it was an opportunity for learning and gave great insight into the life of average highschool students. I find it kind of ridiculous that a character who is no doubt portrayed as homophobic and overmasculine is going to crack a gay joke. It’s exactly what guys like that do, all day, every day. GLAAD is just using this as a platform. I would rather they used it as a learning opportunity (like Glee) instead of haranguing liberal Hollywood for not being liberal enough.
this reminded me of watching Chelsea Lately last night. She wore purple on the day that all of us who stood against gay bashing and demoralizing wore purple in alliance. Yet, last night, she and others on her “panel” alluded to something being “gay”. the way someone bent their wrist. That’s a bit of a dichotomy, don’t ya think?
JoelJust to clarify, my pssronee was to the following: I am not big on anything going in or out of the anal cavity, and I feel genuinely sorry for gays who develop horrible hemmoroidal or venereal problems there as many do. To cite fact: regular anal sex does not incite haemorrhoids or any other venereal disease. In order to catch an STI (or VD for the Americans) one must have unprotected sex with an infected person. And haemorrhoids are most commonly caused by a low fibre/high fat diet. Over half of all Americans have them in some form. In cases where anal sex causes the patient to notice the haemorrhoid, the same effect would have happened from a large-ish bowel movement. I understand that you remember your doctor from the 70s teach you the facts that you cite, but research and medicine has come a long way since then. So has the understanding for the need for contraception as I’m sure you’re aware. I’m sure anal sex spread much venereal disease in the 70s. Protected sex was hardly a big topic then. Also, many people died from sex 40 years ago. AIDS may not have been as prevalent but it has been assisting in the deaths of humans since the Late 19th Century. (Leading theories are that it was transfered from West African apes). The disease was just not IDENTIFIED until the 80s. Since people die from AIDS related illnesses rather than the syndrome itself, the deaths of people prior to this date were just attributed solely to the disease they contracted with under the immuno-deficient state they were in. I agree with you however, that health and sex do not have to be mutually exclusive BUT I also think that health and ANAL sex do not have to be mutually exclusive. The above is my reasoning. I did not intend to flame but argue and debate reasonably. I saw issue with your comment/argument and wanted to respond. As for Davey splintering the already splintered minority’, it hardly seems the actions of someone who blogs consistently about tolerance, acceptance and love. I think we would all do well to take his words in the spirit that they were intended rather than nit-pick his syntax. If it were post on the diversity of sexual options and he neglected to mention options outside of anal sex, I would not doubt the validity of your comment. The main talking point of this blog, however, was anal sex and he discussed the options accordingly.
