This debate is interesting but the what I want to know is if the victim, electric car, was offended by this evil slur.

    • Tarc

I dunno, but the real victim, gay children, certainy are.

    • Vikash

Again, you make my point for me. You cite a statement where I am niivgg my opinion of what I prefer for my own sexualty, and my seem to take my explanation some blanket statement as to why it is wrong for others. I do not feel it is wrong for others again, I stated in my original post, all entitled to their sexual pursuits. (And some are more physically flexible than others.) You reject the hemmoroids anal sex connection. I just did a search on Google, and most of the resources that turn up do not reject this connection, nor do I. Not a doctor, I base my conclusion on the numbers of partners I have had with this problem (a good many young people). There are also sorts of reasons for hemorroids, it is clearly not easily explained in a cause and effect way can be genetic, for example. But stool consistency is frequently cited as a contributor so why would anything else going in and out of there not be? The literature also mention that anal fissures can frequently be mistaken for hemmorhoids fissures (or tears) develop from friction, and anal fissures, even very miniscule or microscopic ones, are very frequently cited as very likely opportunity for the Aids virus (in high concentration in semen) to enter the bloodstream.I don’t accept your history of Aids, simply because there are many points of view on the etiology. Yours is a new one on me, and I have heard hundreds. I can tell you that from a practical point of view, Aids emerged in NYC as a mysterious cancer that no one could explain the victims of the virus did not have the necessary info to protect themselves. (I don’t need a run-down on opportunitic infections and variety of same I am well aware.) Young people today do not have the excuse of lack of information (unless they were forcibly raped or incapable of understanding what they were doing to begin with. Young, uninformed people continue to have sex, so the whole subject is a touchy one.) I have worked in hospitals for many years with Aids patiends, so I feel that I have a pretty good grasp of the progression of the virus. Partly because there are some accepted (but expensive) treatments now, there is a complacency about sex and risk. But this is far beyond what I ever intended to post. Again, my comment was only that about the limited scope of Davey’s statements about one kind of sex. But then again, I would probably bristle at the notion that gay people should do anything at all. Gays are a diverse community of individuals that are pursuing many types of sex, relationships and goals. (As you may have guessed from my original post, I hated the clone look , for example, which was popular in New York if you are too young to remember, it was a fashion that we all should wear leather bomber jackets. Definite peer pressure to buy one of those things. Ugh.) We all should do nothing but lead positive and productive lives in my opinion. I’m sure Davey’s intent was much more light-hearted than the impression I’m leaving, but my response was merely that there is a wide range of sexuality out there, and there is.

So is “Gay” the new “N” word? Seems like the gays can use it to describe themselves, but no one else is allowed to. Hmm…not allowing someone to do something because for whatever reason you dont like it? Whatever! Someone wake me when the age of political correctness is over?

    • Sal

I think there’s a clear difference between “the gays” using the term to describe themselves and others using it with a derogatory connotation. If you can’t see this, you’re already asleep.

      • Steph

Thank you for leaving what seems like the only intelligent comment in this thread, Sal.

      • Steve

I agree that Sal’s comment is intelligent. There’s another derogatory term that would fit this description quite well, that’s used by a different minority. If you think about it, there are quite a few, actually.

    • RL

no one is against people using the word “gay” to describe gay people. so it’s really not similar to the N word anyway. and would you really say people don’t “allow” people to use the N word “for whatever reason [they] don’t like it?”??? besides, why would you WANT to use the N word? are PC police REALLY stopping you from using a word you WANT to use?

      • Tarc

LOL! Bizarre. No one can stop you from using a word… people are just holding people responsible for their WORDS and BEHAVIOR (like always). If you like to use derogator and bigoted language, then you’ll be held responsible for it.

    • Chris

The issue isn’t the use of “gay” to describe a group of people. Even if it were, by your logic it would be okay to use the “N” word because some African-Americans use the word in referring to each other. Is it being “PC” to recognize the difference between what we “can” say and what we “should” say? Is human decency too “PC” for you?

    • Debbie

This comment is just plain moronic.

    • Slimer

what if I want to use the word “gay” to describe someone as happy?

    • Margot707

Stating that someone is gay, as in homosexual, is very different than saying “that’s gay” as in “that lame” or “that’s bad.”

  • B

A lot of you really are gay retards.

    • Bob

      Takes one to know one.

  • Q.H.

    Get over it, people.

    • Sam

      Get over yourself.

      • Bos

in his video, gay people enjoy a wide veriaty of sexuality, including top, bottom or versitile, I would have had no problem at all. But listen to what he said only top, bottom, or versitile (does not include the infinite veriaty of other sexuality see Silverman’s Joy of Gay Sex , as one resource, and one which has been updated. Saw Silverman in a lecture once, he liked to describe the basic positions as vanilla sex no shortage of veriaty with him.) I have no interest in bantering with or flaming anyone. I am from the generation of NYC gays that is considered the lost generation because of Aids largely wiped out because of lack of information that today’s gays have. Ever read Larry Kramer? But I am alive and fully healthy at a relatively young 54, and thank God for it though I lost my partner of 10 years and many friends to that disease. Health and sex do not have to be mutually exclusive. Enjoy your sex life, but use your brain, as well. Hopefully, this post ends the flaming there are some very sensitive souls on this board who do not listen very well. My best to Davey Wavey I continue to be a fan (especially for his 60 s-ish outlook on human kindness), and I wish him continued success. I look forward to many future videos.

    • Tarc

Sorry, I’m not getting over all those dead kids. Ever. No decent, moral person should.

  • timelord24

well in the 1st episode of community’s season 2, chang uses the word gay in the same context twice. why hasn’t GLAAD objected to that?

    • Frank

Because nobody but you watches that show.

  • Mike

the good news is that we can all decide to stay home and not watch this movie. Hurt Ron Howard in the only way he’ll feel it, in the purse. Just like Ben Stiller hiding behind satire while he mocked the disabled in Tropic Thunder, Ron Howard has truly lost his way. Bet if one of his children were gay this wouldn’t be happening.

  • Rob

given five suicides by kids who have been bullied because they were gay or perceived to be, GLAAD has a right and responsibility to condemn the practice of using “gay” as a negative term. Certainly, if the term was that’s so Jewish, the response would be immediate. Is Ron aware that Nov. 29th is “Kick a Ginger Day?” No child should be bullied for any reason… I’d encourage Ron Howard to join a campaign to discourgae bullying.

    • Tarc

Nine suicides that are known be be orientatio nrelated, with the real number likely to very much higher. And this was in three weeks in September alone. The needless deaths of American children should be of deep concern for ALL moral Americans.

  • BJohnson

All GLAAD is doing it helping to promote the film and make it earn more money. I didn’t even know this movie existed until they started complaining about it.

  • Hannah

Wow. GLAAD is acting so gay!

    • Hannah

And by “gay” I mean overly dramatic, anal-retentive, and extremely self-absorbed.

      • Tarc

Well, you’ve got that self-absorbtion bit down. And that bit of nasty is pretty unappealing as well.

  • Anna

Ron Howard may be my new hero! I am glad to see Mr. Howard not giving in to GLAAD. I wish people would stop being so sensitive anytime something is said and you don’t know the whole story. We live in a world where only the good soundbites are heard and we forget how to take things in context or try to find out the whole story.

    • Tarc

‘The whole story’ is known, and it doesn’t change the fact that language used this ways is homophobic and destructive to children. This issue is not going away: the President, the Speaker of the House, the head of Health & Human Services, the Secretary of Education (etc.) have all spoken out in recent days on the subject of gay bullying and creation of hostile environments for gay children. Get a clue.

      • Anna

When I said “the whole story”, it was a generalization of the media in general.

      • Tarc

I agree that people do need to understand the whole story. Unfortunately, the whole story includes defending institutionalized homophobia disguised as a ‘joke’. To add insult to injury – and to illustrate total cluelessness – it’s also defended as a ‘joke’. If Howard had replaced ‘gay’ with the n-word, there would not be this discussion and the prejudice would be (slightly more) clear.

      • EricMontreal22

I find it bizarre that *adults* are defending the use of the word gay in this way… I know it’s common schoolyard talk–but has it really become that common and acceptable? Wow.

  • jack

screw glaad up their stupid asses..oh wait the the G in glaad will like that too much!!!It`s time for glaad to stop acting just like the bullies their trying to stop. These gay jokes have been around forever so have been racial, fat, skinny, ugly,yo momma, midget jokes but you don`t see throwing a fit everytime someone feelings get hurt.I agree physically hurting someone for being gay is wrong, but joking about being isn`t.Maybe if the gays were proud of themselves they would take that power away from the bullies. As forth the suicides it`s sad,but maybe they were ashamed of themselves and scared to come out,but don`t blame us straights people for that!!!If your gay own it and be proud and no one can hurt you!!!you reading this ANDERSON COOPER CLOSET MAN!!!

    • Tarc

It’s pretty clear that you don’t understand what the actual issue is. There is a very clear difference between joking and what is happening. And, to use your thoughts as an example, if everyone wasn’t ALWAYS trashing gay people (seriously, 24-7-365 in the media, in real life, online), then there would be no issue. It’s very, very clear that you CAN blame religion, heterosexism, and heteronormative assumptions as a root cause of much of the hostile environment created.

    • Steve

Fortunately people aren’t – usually – bullied and teased and hated for having a poor command of simple grammar and spelling. Otherwise we’d all be weeping over the graves of, well…a lot of people posting here.

  • jack

RICHIE CUNNINGHAM RULES!!!YOU TO VINCE,YOUR SO MONEY AND DON`T EVEN KNOW IT!!!

  • pointpc24

I think it’s funny that they edited the gay joke out of the trailer and added a joke mocking Helen Keller. Nice…

    • Tarc

I find it more interesting that they edited the trailer – because they know that they are in the wrong – but not the film. I’m guessing that the studio decided the cost of editing was worth more to them than any of the societal costs.

  • jake

Really. Who the **** cares? With its early January release date, the pic is clearly a stinker (think “Ed TV” and “Gung Ho” in Howard’s ouevre), and the studio is just trying to drum up some additional publicity. Casting Connelly in a comedy seems foolish, too. She’s not a bad (if overrated) actress, but doesn’t have a light comedic bone in her body.
