Cablevision customers file $450 million class action lawsuit

Tags: , , TV

A group of New York customers have filed a class action lawsuit, Gallo v. Cablevision Systems Corp., arguing that Cablevision customers deprived of Fox content (such as Glee, The Simpsons, and New York Giants football) deserve rebates. The plaintiffs are asking for about $450 million in damages. [THR, Esq.]

These networks and cable providers need to get a clue. I laugh at the network (Fox) because they feel they need to be reimbursed for “quality programming”, which, in the case of “Lone Star” they cancelled after 2 episodes. And the cable providers are clueless too: you’re losing to satellite, online, and you want in on this fight?

Wonder if the FCC will step in and set some regulations or are we all left to just eat it as customers?

Um millions of dollars because you The only rebate these people are entitled to is for their cable company to give them the pennies they may have due to them from the 2 weeks without Fox. Most people have hundreds of(crappy) channels, divide that number to get the daily cost of 1 channel(or how many Fox channels there are) and its less than 1 cent a day. People need to get over themselves. I wonder if they realize if Cablevision allows Fox to more than double the price for the channels…..their bills will skyrocket! You think Cablevision is going to simply eat the increased cost to have FOx?

That doesnt make any sense at all. You said that we are paying less than a penny a day, yet if they double that our bills would skyrocket??? explain

Because the prices are not actually equal. Networks and “Premium” channels cost more than CSPAN. Also, the cost of ONE network/family raising prices might not drastically alter the game, but what if more decide to. Holding the line on exorbitant fees seems to be in the consumer’s best interest.

it’s sad thst this is the 3rd or 4th time this year that this occured. they were quick enough to bring back food network & hgtv, which i’m sure not alot of people watch, they brought back abc during the oscars, & now no football, & no world series….seems to me that the people at cablevision can’t handle contract negociations.
Cablevision is just a horrible company which horrible customer service. The best they can offer you is a scripted response when you call them. Aside from a class action suit against cablevision, maybe, James & Charles Dolan, who run cablevision should be sued directly….maybe then cablevision will get their acts together

Cablevision is a pretty crappy company. Thankfully I’ve only lived in towns where Comcast is.

But Cablevision, in Jersey at least, is usually in the big markets (Newark, Elizabeth, Jersey City). Sucks for them

450 million is a little outrageous but I do understand getting back rebates or something.

    • Jackie

I know $450 million sounds like a lot, but how many customers do you think are in on the suit? Take out a chunk for the lawyer(s) handling the suit, divide what’s left over amongst the customers, and you probably don’t end up with all that much per customer.

How in your right mind can you say that Cablevision is to blame for this? Firstly Fox is a free channel that a person in a trailer with a mobile tv with an antenna and perhaps some tinfoil can pick up free of charge. Secondly they are asking for ridiculous amounts of money from Cablevision ( 180 Million). The only reason they are even asking for so much is because they know ABC did the same thing last year and Cablevision eventually caved. What is gross to me is that the owner of Fox is so morbidly greedy and selfish that negotiations are not even happening to ensure the people of the US justice in this matter of what is right and what is wrong.Clearly it’s not right to take this fight out on the American public. I am sure the Fox execs are not hurting for cash like the rest of the US citizens are in this troubled economy. Most People want nothing more then to come home at night and watch their favorite tv show. I mean it’s just a prime example of people with money and power screwing over the normal American family.. You think we would all be used to it by now… Funny I Can only speak for myself here when I say that I don’t think I ever will be used to being screwed over and overlooked as a pawn in a rich man’s chess game.

Fox is not the top channel in the New York market – the only reason why ABC got their money. And to be honest, I only watch 4 shows on Fox that I’m more than happy to watch online for free.

Newscorp blocked out its content on both Hulu and Fox.com for Cablevision customers.

  • mark seiff

Cablevision should charge Fox a fee for transmitting their signal. Their lawyers got it backward. Fox is a free channel and should be available at no charge to the consummer. We pay for the programming when we buy the beer, coke and cars. We should not have top pay again in what are sure to be increased fees. The FCC should let Fox know that they need to release the signal or have no signal at all and revoke their license.

The people behind this lawsuit are greedy bastards. Get over yourselves and buy one of those digital conversion boxes for your tv. You’ll get FOX for FREE through over the air digital distribution.

my husband and i are very upset that we can’t watch the world series and the football team. i am going to ask for the refund if it is not settled this weekend. what is holding everything up. settle, please settle.

  • Eddie

I spoke with cablevision this evening and they told me they offered fox the same amount comcast gave them and fox would not take it, I can only hold for another week or so before I switch providers, I like to watch Football and the champions league, I don’t get fox en espanol anymore either because fox has blocked that one also, I don’t think we the customers should suffer because thet big companies can’t reach an agreement. PUT FOX BACK ON AND LEAVE US OUT OF THIS!!!!!

  • Clete

Fox, don’t do it. How am I to keep up without my daily fix of commercials?
