Conan O'Brien announces house band for new show

Following news that Max Weinberg would not be joining Conan O’Brien for his new TBS show, the late-night host announced that his new in-house music will be performed by The Basic Cable Band, led by guitarist Jimmy Vivino, who worked with O’Brien on The Tonight Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The band also includes other familiar faces: Scott Healy (keyboards), Mike Merritt (bass), Mark Pender (trumpet), Richie “LaBamba” Rosenberg (trombone), James Wormworth (drums), as well as Jerry Vivino (saxophone, woodwinds and vocals). O’Brien’s self-titled late night show debuts Nov. 8.

Seriously, is there a single human being out there that finds this interesting? Who cares who the house band is? It all sounds the same on these late night shows.

Me… Liked the name of the band and that its all familiar faces.

But I’m not spending time sucking the fun out of everything. Have a great day JPX!

Never mind qing, Elizabeth! I’m with you on Conan’s band. JPX=buzzkill.

    • me

Yep, I do! So there. The “same” sound to which you are referring is that of high caliber musicians. To some people this is newsworthy.

I agree! However Max will be missed in my book!!! :(

I care. Guys like La Bamba, Mark Pender & Vivino have a history with Conan and I always enjoy watching Conan interact with them. Also glad to hear James Wormworth is getting full-time duty on drums after filling in for Max so many times over the years.

I care. I saw the “Legally Prohibited” show was REALLY impressed by the band in person. LaBamba, in particular, is a real showman. Very talented group of musicians!

    • Mole

      La Bamba!

    • Brian

Any fans of Conan know his house band play a large part in the show. Can’t wait for LaBamba and Pender and the rest to be back on my TV!

JPX, you’d rather more worthless updates on the next Twilight movie?

Let’s move off for a second because I loved the recent TBS commercial where Conan’s moving to Def Leppard’s 1987 song Pour Some Sugar on Me and splashing water on his head and face! I didn’t know that Conan all was into the ’80s heavy metal bands but that was so fun to hype his new late night talk show! Had me pulling out my Hysteria CD that I’ve had for a few years (wore the tape out back in 1988 when playing it over and over!)!

Def Leppard and Conan both suck! The commercial was stupid and not funny. That is all…….

      • Blaaaake!

I guess you would know all there is to know about sucking…

  • Derek

I would say “the roots” certainly dont sound like any other late night talk show band.

    • Jeremy DC

When it comes to the music they play on the show I would say they sound the same as everyone else.

      • rooster hater

You need to get out more Jeremy DC…

I feel bad they will be called ‘The Basic Cable Band’ for all time. 3 years from now, is anyone going to want to still be reminded of Conan’s bitterness for being ‘relegated’? I think the self-deprecation should stop the minute the new show begins.

    • Rach

I think they will come up with a new name, but to call them “Conan’s band” is too much. I’m not sure what Jimmy Kimmel calls his band.

  • Charlee

    YAY! La Bamba!

  • Al

Thank you for keeping me up to date on all the Conan happenings. I love the daily updates on Conan’s new promos, twitter posts, publicity shots and band info. I have November 8 circled on my calendar. I will sit down that night and watch his premiere . . and then probably lose interest and never watch again.

    • pancakes

I’m about half as enthusiastic as Al. I’ll probably tune in out of curiosity then swtich channels before the monologue is over.

  • carolyn morris

The pop-up ads in the middle of reading the news brief is REALLY annoying! I will read other networks from now on.

  • AdamLaw

    Love the band name!
