Vince Vaughn breaks silence on 'The Dilemma' controversy

Vince Vaughn issued a statement to Deadline regarding the controversy surrounding the trailer for The Dilemma, which came under fire for featuring a joke that called electric cars “gay.” Said Vaughn, “Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing divided lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop.”

Bravo! I agree completely. Family Guy does much worse on a regular basis. As does South Park. It’s all in the name of satire. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves.

    • Holly

What people forget is that a joke can be offensive AND funny. Taken out of its proper context (ie. focusing on a second-long clip from a 2-hour movie) a joke loses its humorous effect. I have not seen the movie but it may well be that within the context established up to that point in the dialogue, saying “electric cars are so gay” might actually be funny. That is what Vince Vaughn is saying, I think.

  • Go Figure

So True! I have been laughing at Vince Vaughn’s “career” for a long time now!

  • gooters

yea this whole thing has been pretty gay tbh

  • Brad

What if the line was “that car is so n–ger”? No one would be laughing then. Its not about comedy.

    • The Jackal

Yeah, being black is really not a choice.

      • Brad

Being gay isn’t a choice either.

      • Jen

        And being gay/lesbian is?

      • The Jackal

        Sure is

      • The Jackal

Not that there is anything wrong with it.

      • James S.

Yeah, neither is being gay, Jackal. Comments like yours are exactly the sort of thing that encourage people to bully and taunt. Welcome to being on the wrong side of right.

      • The Jackal

It’s the nature vs. nuture debate. Just because my opinion is different doesn’t make me wrong. Seems a little hypocritical of you, you seem more intolerant of other’s people’s opinion but you want others to be tolerant of your lifestyle, which I am, there’s nothing wrong with being gay.

      • yea basically

yea basically jackal’s right… there was nothing about the line that had anything to do with bullying or homosexuality. im not going to see the movie now bc if they were willing to compromise the artistic vision (and believe me i know how retarded this sounds when were talking about a kevin james movie) so that line would not hurt its box office grosses then who knows what other types of CREATIVE BULLYING happened along the way…

      • Brad

Nature vs nurture still isn’t a choice. If one is “nurtured” into being gay, again, it wasn’t their choice.

      • ML

So that would mean that you chose to be straight but could’ve been gay? It’s not a choice, as a gay person I would know.

      • Renee

Homosexuality is something you act on based on your urges (and everyone’s got some sort of urge). It’s not a choice in the sense that you wake up one day and say “yep, I’m gay today”. But you do have a choice on whether or not you act on the urges. Being Asian is not a sin, but practicing homosexuality is. I hate the idea of encouraging anyone to do anything that separates he or she from the Lord. Surely they can continue (hello free will), but I’m under no obligation to support that decision.

      • Brad

Renee, I would like to point out the many other sins as listed in the bible.

        1.) Lying
        2.) Coveting
        3.) Sex before marriage

The bible also encourages stoning as an acceptable form of punishment for prostitution, as well as for wearing clothing made from two different materials. (Hello poly/cotton blend…)

Don’t get me started on having a relationship with the Lord.

Let’s remember what Jesus Christ said- the rule above all others is to “Love others as you would like to be loved”.

Homosexuality is something I was born with, just as someone who is born Asian, black, blue eyed, brown haired, handicapped, etc…

It is insulting that the media continues to use “gay” as a slang word for something that is “uncool, not hip, taboo”. Unacceptable. Were this about any other social group, this kind of behavior would never EVER fly.

      • Mad Man

How would you know if it’s a choice? Are you gay? If not, then you don’t really have an informed opinion.

      • Mad Man

@Renee – I really hope Jesus has mercy for ignorant, self righteous religious bigots like you.

      • Larry

People need to set a better example when they use words that identify a group of people and then use that same word in the comical sense to identify something else. We have grown so accustomed to using “It’s so gay” that we have become immune to the negativity it might be to some people. Obviously our children are repeating it in the school system to describe their peers in a negative way. So we need to be find a way to stop that behavior and treat people as we would to be treated.

      • Jack

        Brad. You gay bastard.

      • Mr. Rubino

Jackal: Incorrect facts are not opinions. They are incorrect facts. So yes, you’re wrong. Also, opinions can be wrong if based on illogical premises or incorrect facts; it’s just called “invalid” instead of “wrong”.
Renee: Choosing to feel feelings is not choosing to do actions. This is not difficult to understand. Pull down your smokescreen and engage in actual debate.
This controversy: Nothing new under the sun.

      • TakeItBack

How about we take gay back from the homosexuals!I’m tired of saying I’m in a “gay mood” and being stampeded by dudes trying to fondle my junk. Hell, half the homosexuals I’ve met were so depressed about being persecuted by society that you’d be a sarcastic prick to call them gay.

    • Diva

Comedy is subjective. You may laugh at one thing but not at others.

    • Rusty Shackleford

      You ever watch The Boondocks?

    • Brett

Funny, but before the homosexual community stole the word “gay” it meant “happy.” And apparently the homosexual community has proclaimed that the word can have no other meaning now.

      • Felicia

I agree. People do have a tendency to forget that many of the words that are used for homosexuality today once had entirely different meanings. It’s not the same as the n-word; that never had any other meaning.

      • Felicia

However, I’m not sure that “stole” is the right word to use.

    • Holly

The N-word IS used a lot in movies, often in overtly racist ways. In Martin Scorcese’s “Casino” Joe Pesce’s character is racist and uses this term liberally. Like Vince Vaughn says, where does it end…

    • dave

I’m gonna be honest, I would probably laugh at that. I’m not racist, but picturing Vince Vaughn and Kevin James standing there while he says that his car is n—er, that would be classic.

  • Diva

I don’t like Vince Vaughn but I agree with him on this.

  • The Jackal

You go through any movie and you can find something that will offend someone. I don’t get bent out of shape if someone says “beaten like a red headed step child” That’s advocating violence right there more so than calling a car gay.

  • gay bully

It would be a nice twist if some of these ignorant, homophobic ass-hats would start killing themselves to even thing out…

  • Don

I am insulted. There is an entire continent of people who were born black. It is part of our dna and we are classified as a completely seperate ethnic group. Also the persecution blacks have suffered through out the centuries bt the Dutch, the English, the French and the Arabs is far beyond a case of bullying because we are different. Regardless of what lies you tell your self, sexual identity is largely a choice. It is your choice and it probably makes you happy of you feel fulfilled. Which is ok because it is great that people can make choices and those choices be defended. Thats not to say that the choice is easy, but it is a choice none the less.
You don’t have black people hiding their blackness from their families untill they can be accepted for their blackness. See the logic? I hope you can.

    • Steven

So tell me Don, did you decuide to become straight? I’ve been gay for as long as I remember and I can’t change that. I could fake it and pretend to be straight, but that’s like making black people pain their skin white to be “normal”. We’re all normal. Sure, we weren’t slaved, but we are still being attacked and bullied for BEING BORN this way. The reason we wait to tell out families is because they don’t always understand. In a way it’s worse for us. We have to hide who we are.

Sorry for the rant Don, but really since you are also a minority shouldn’t you understand what we’re fighting for? We were born with this. I didn’t decide to be gay.But I’m happy with the way I am.

      • Steven

decide* paint* our* That’s what I get for not proofreading.

    • Denise

Don, your “logic” fails. Steven did not wake up one day and “decide” to be gay any more than you or I woke up one day and “decided” to be black. “You don’t have black people hiding their blackness from their families untill they can be accepted for their blackness”…..maybe not, but you can certainly still find people trying to hide their blackness from the world, famous and not so famous alike. And the fact that you are insulted at the thought of being compared to gays says a lot about you, despite your claim that “it’s OK”.

    • Voodoo

Because in the distant past blacks were mistreated YOU have to nag now. Besides, you don’t wanna know what the Spanish did to the Dutch, it was a whole lot worse than they did to the native Americans. Just look it up, moron. Everyone can complain about history, fact is, most people don’t. Piss off.

      • Elli

The distant past? Oh, you mean like the early 1960s? Because blacks in this country were absolutely mistreated until that point and even later in some cases. Before you get all preachy about history, maybe you should actually explore the history yourself.

  • Queen Bee

Vince Vaughn is right on the money.

  • crichey

DiD anybody even see the clip he even goes on to say that he doesnt mean gay people or in any offense to gay people…i fully support gay people and there right to be happy and be who they are but in this case i think people need to lighten up a little

  • subs2828

For any of you who still think homosexuality is a true choice, I’m almost willing to bet money that you haven’t had a close friend or family member who was gay. Asking some of my close gay friends to pretend to be straight, would be as funny as having me imitate a gay man.

Continuing to belittle, demean, and interject your “expert” opinions on homosexuality isn’t helping a thing and it doesn’t make you any bigger of a person. Let’s let you be you, and me be me and stay out of everyone’s business. Peace.

Christians need to look very closely at the scripture in Matthew, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

  • Beni

I don’t get it. The pejorative use of the word gay is tasteless, but what else did you expect from a modern comedy? Now this show got a lot more free press and the audience it wanted; young bucks who want to screw the system. Way to go ‘thought police’.

  • Metalhero D

Honestly, at this point in time, it’s almost safe to say that the language has evolved to a point where that usage of the word ‘gay’ is completely seperate from the usage used to refer to homosexual men. Just as the usage of it to mean happy is a seperate meaning.
