'Gay' controversy: Studio releases new 'Dilemma' trailer

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

Universal has released a new trailer for Ron Howard’s big-screen comedy The Dilemma, responding to backlash stemming from a joke in the original trailer about electric cars being “gay.” In a statement issued yesterday, the studio said that the teaser trailer was “not intended to cause anyone discomfort.” The film, which stars Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, is slated to hit theaters on Jan. 14.

they usually release stinkers in January

  • Brianna

Oh wow! What’s next?! Is GLAAD going to take over Saturday Night Live too? It’s a frickin free country…get over yourselves.

    • Yeah, heaven forbid we not be allowed to use “gay” as an insult. I’m gonna start using “black”, “woman”, and “Christian” now, too, whenever somebody’s uneducated, weak, or crazy. I mean, it’s a free country, so why can’t I associate stereotypical traits with certain types of people? I mean, as long as I’m making you laugh.

      • Donna

        Well-said!

      • ….

        Nah. Just use “gay”.

      • D

This would be funny if it wasn’t already what happens.

      • whatevs

Well, every other group does get bashed, so you wouldn’t be any different from anyone else if you did that. I also highly doubt that you’ve never said anything offensive around certain people.

      • so funny

Can’t we just all get along??? hahhah! All of you are acting so gay!!! I mean, not homosexual gay, but, you know…my parents are chaperoning the dance gay! :) :) :)

      • that’s gay

They never told Katy Perry to edit her song Ur So Gay. The song is about a guy. Katy would have probably told them she would throw a coke in their face before giving in to anyone trying to edit her music.

      • Tarc

Nine dead gay young people in the last month isn’t funny. At all.

      • Tarc

        Hello bigoted stereotypes!

      • epic moment

That was a classic moment when Katy told Kara: please stop..I’ll have to throw my coke in your face. epic!

      • Too Serious

@Tarc……nobody is making fun of people dying……nobody is hating gays. People are making fun of people who are getting offended easily and being drama queens. Why edit a comedy?

      • just relax

Hey!! I love Vince Vaughn! No one is perfect ok! What do you expect people to be like The Stepford Wives or something? Do you want everyone to be 100% sweet and 100% perfect? He was just kiddin around. Just calm down!

      • why????

This crap is more funny than that Katy Perry Elmo incident!! They ended up deleting a whole scene, that sucks for the director-big time!

      • Noelbelle

        re: That’s Gay
If you’d actually listen to Katy Perry’s song, you’d know that the line that follows “Ur so gay” is “and you don’t even like boys.” The entire song is about how this hipster guy has co-opted STEREOTYPICAL gay qualities like wearing scarves and make-up and being self-involved, but he’s not actually gay. She wasn’t using gay in the way the trailer was at all.

      • Tarc

@Too Serious – That’s the point – yes, they are. Sub the N-word for ‘gay’ and it’s clearly appalling.

      • rerun

The proper statement would have been: “That car’s so homosexual.”

      • COME ON!

They did a new trailer AND had to take that scene out of the movie. That really sucks. If I was the director-I would be pissed.

      • read

@Noel-Katys song was more offensive than the movie trailer. Read the lyrics…she makes it seem like gays are stuck up.

      • Becca

The different trailer should of been enough for them, but it wasn’t, they still made them completely delete the scene out of the movie. That’s not fair.

      • Becca

and, Vince clearly said: not in the homosexual way gay, he said: my parents are chaperoning the dance gay.

      • Craig

The problem is using the word to indicate “stupid” – that is what causes young kids to think that there is something wrong with them.

I notice you said you are going to start to use the word “black” – not the N-word – using “GAY” as a joke is equivalent to using the N word to those of us who are or know gay people.

      • matt

your right and why can’t we use the word ni–er for ingnorant people !

  • Jonathan Sullivan

The minute I saw that trailer I KNEW that it was going to be taken down. Sad though, because that was the one funny thing in that trailer.

  • Yaket

Yeah, well I find the whole movie offensive.. Can universal not release it then?

  • CLARK

What the heck is wrong with electric cars???

All kidding aside, if it would have been “Jewish,” “Black” or any other group — the trailer would not have seen the light of day, period.

    • rw

you’re wrong…there are jewish and black jokes all the time in movies and on tv…apparently only gays are off-limits at the moment

  • Ashley

After seeing the trailer-the movie makes Queen Latifah and Vince Vaughn characters who talk in a laid back way and raunchy. That’s what comedies do. Get over it!

    • good point

exactly…Queen Latifah and Vince are suppose to be those type of talkers who are crazy and careless. They are the types of laid back characters who talk crazy even at their jobs. I was cracking up during the trailer, especially at Queen Latifah’s character…she was so entertaining!

    • Tom

hey Ashley what would be funnier is if they call Queen Latifah a nappy headed ho!!!

  • Fatima

If they want to have their characters be casually ignorant and stupid in the context of their story…then let them say stuff like this. It can have a place. But in a trailer out of context and as a stand alone joke? Completely stupid. Some will complain that this isn’t a big deal. I’m just glad that it is putting pressure on studios to think twice about their casual homophobia.

    • CLARK

      Agreed

    • Bruce L

I’m inclined to agree with this — although I wouldn’t go so far as to say this character’s boorishness and casual homophobia, both of which are probably meant to put the ultimate joke on him for being an @$$, are completely “without context” (he is played by Vince Vaughn, after all).

  • Hudson

I’m sure Howard and Co. have very deep regrets about releasing a trailer that is drawing a significant amount of attention to a movie I had previously never heard of…

  • Tom

Get over it people, if this upsets you then quit being so Hispanic!!!

  • Mike

I work at the theater and I was wondering why they were making us pull the trailer. Well with this and Harry Potter being pulled for the 3-D thing, I have had morw work than usual. I hate taking out trailers!

  • James S.

I’m gay, and I laughed out loud at that moment in the trailer. People need to stop being so sensitive. How retarded. Oops! See there? I just offended the mentally challenged.

    • DT

You mean there are gay a$$hole$ out there, too? Wow!

      • Woot

Everyone knows that all gay people are A-Holes. Also, they are all fire breathing demons that are trying to indoctrinate the children of America.

      • James S.

DT, you obviously missed the irony. You see, what I was doing there was…but you probably won’t get it, anyway, so never mind.

  • Ryan O’Brien

I thought it was funny because it is what your average person would say. “That’s gay. Not in a homosexual way but…’ I’ve gotten in fights with friends over them using that word in the manner of it meaning ‘stupid’. They don’t find it offensive.

Oh, and just this afternoon the original trailer was on a print of the “Wall Street” showing I went too

  • Roy

Remember that scene in The 40 Year Old Virgin where the two losers go back and forth describing how they know each other is gay? Where was the outrage?
People hate to admit it but “gay” has another meaning in the lexicon that has nothing at all to do with demeaning homosexuality. The fact that so many people infer there own negative connotations onto what the clip tries to represent says more about the judger than the word.

    • Woot

Well in the “calling each other gay” scene in the 40 year old virgin, gay did mean homosexual… it was just in a playful way… not offensive.

  • scorpo

I just saw The Social Network and the original trailer is still playing. The sad thing about this controversy is that it is giving free publicity to what looks like a crap movie.

    • facebook sucks

I hate that frickin facebook website! Please just stop talking about facebook-LOL! What a nightmare!!!

  • bg

Ridiculous!! I don’t see them pulling trailers for fat jokes or retarted jokes or ugly people jokes, when these people are just as much of a minority. I hate political correctness.

    • Tarc

Trouble is, it wasn;t a joke, but a rather subtle form of hate speech. If the line was a white guy using the N-word, no one would bat an eye over the trailer being pulled, and no one would say ‘just take the abuse’ – which is what you’re suggesting. Nine dead young gay people in the last four week illustrates the atmosphere of HATE that these so-called jokes helps create.

      • OK

Here’s what I don’t understand. Why is it Ok for black people to use the N word, but no one else. And gays can say “too gay” [see Must Love Dogs], but heteros can’t?

      • Tarc

Yeah, and black people that use the N-word have illusion that they are ‘reclaiming’ the word, when all they are doing is perpetuating the denigration. There is supposedly a contextual difference, but, in general, there is not. The issue is very, very far from ‘joking’ when such casual homophobia is creating an atmosphere where impressionable young people are killing themselves at a horrific rate.

      • Zakry

Awww… it upsets you that you can’t slur a race of people when you want to? Poor babies.
