'Dora the Explorer' voice actress files lawsuit against Nickelodeon

Filed under: News and tagged:

Caitlin Sanchez, the 14-year-old actress who had voiced Dora the Explorer on the Nickelodeon hit show since 2007, has filed a lawsuit against the network. In the suit, Sanchez and her parents claim they were pressed to sign an overly complex contract, and that the actress was underpaid for her work.

Nickelodeon has released the following statement: “The claims being made are baseless. Unfortunately, Caitlin’s voice changed and she was no longer able to portray the Dora character, as happened with the actress who originated the role. Caitlin’s contract was extensively negotiated through her agent and in compliance with her union. She was well-compensated for her work and for personal appearances. We have enjoyed working with Caitlin on Dora the Explorer these past three years, and we did in fact offer her a contract for other work with us.”

What’s the problem? She’s still got a few years before she becomes a cleaning lady with 17 kids and a 5 foot smelly husband. She should relax and enjoy them!

    • anonymous

Your attempt at humor failed with me. Next time, try not making racist jokes.

      • Vickie

Racists has got to be the most overused word in this country.

      • DRae

It’s true but not racist. And Vickie, you are right. Racist is so overused it doesn’t mean anything anymore.

      • dlt

Wow…how superior do you think you are? People are suffering and trying to rescue their families from a horrific drug cartel violent country and all you have is …fine wine? Very intelligent of you!

      • jules

        “You’re,” dumbass, not “your.”

      • Vickie

No, these people are coming for the gravy train. Mexico doesn’t want their welfare class so they are encouraged to pile in on us.

      • pj

Ha Ha Ha,,,you’re nothing but another right wing nut job that feels like you need to blame all your problems on immigrants.Grow UP

  • Bob the Monk

just like when I grew too old to flip burgers at McDonalds. they offered me work as a shift manager. I don’t see what’s wrong here? Am I the only one who cares about the rules?

    • mtraptor

This isn’t Vietnam, this is Nickelodeon.

      • heej

        THERE ARE RULES

    • Karl

OK why are the racist comments just not ceasing?

  • dlauthor

All together, now! “Dora, Dora, Dora the Exploited!”

  • Michael

    Swiper, no swiping!

  • Nebakaroneous

Dora wants uno, dos, tres million dollars!

    • Stephanie T.

lol! Ella necesita dinero para pagar su casa. She need mucho money!

  • sd

contracts are complex. thats why you have lawyers/ agents look at them. don’t sign it if you don’t agree with it/ and or don’t know what its stating.

  • dlt

OMG..we have had a school shooting, drug cartel violence/killing in South Texas, our soldiers are still involved in a war, Dora is the last item of interest on most American’s minds! And yes I’m hispanic too!

    • Mark S

Heaven forbid that an entertainment website reports an entertainment story. Next time we should make sure that any entertainment story talks about school shootings or the war, just so we can make dlt happy.

  • Michael

yawn yawn yawn…. all of you need to get a life.

  • Mark S

She should get Backpack and see if one of the items is a loophole. Delicouso!

    • jules

      HA!

  • Tom

Maybe the contract should have been written in Spanish. Dora should be teaching the hispanics too lazy to learn English, English.

    • dlt

There you go…keep embracing the differences in culture and language! How narrow minded can you be?

      • dlt

This is why America will never move forward past racism and bigotry.

      • Tom

FU Kowtowing to the hispanics who chose to make themselves above the law so they can undercut what makes the USA of what was once great. If you can have an Hispanic
Scholarship Fund and that is is not racist, while an Anglo fund would be, then this country is f’ed up. Not racist, just a proud American who is sick of the
        Socialist taking over this country!!!

    • ness

      Loser!

      • Tom

Chupa me pene ness!!! Hispanics are no longer the minority and still leech of the government like they are. If I chose to raise money to send only white people to college, would that make me racist. In this socialist country yes. My grandparent chose to assimilate, your hispanic people chose to squat here and force the true citizens to assimilate. FU wetbacks

    • @Tom

It’s a show for little kids, you ass.

      • Tom

yeah a show for kids who should learn English, and not the language of the people so ashamed that they can no longer live in their country that they run here for a better life. If the USA is so much better and our laws our in English, then learn English!!!!!

    • Lia

Oh Tom… I guess you have never ever watched the show. It s bilingual just because they throw a few words in Spanish but mainly teaches English to kids from Hispanic origin. I am Hispanic and very proud of my race. I do not live from “welfare” neither I “ran out of my country” because I am ashamed of it. I work hard, pay my taxes and accomplish my citizen duties. I move to America because; 1)I love this country 2)There’ s opportunities for everyone and 3) Because I can.
Do not spread your seed of hatred just because you don’t know better than that. Although Dora’s character is from Hispanic origins, she speaks mainly English.
As far as I know and remember the Great America we live on was build by immigrants. Heck not all of them learned English before they died, but their kids and their kids kids did. Please refrain yourself before making derogatory comments of a race you don’t know anything about, not even the smallest thing. I am not saying there’s not some people that abuse the government help, but be fair, you can find them in any race. You call them Hispanics; others can other groups or races, (ie; what they call “white trash”, “Africans Americans”, etc.) Why we cannot separate one person from the next, not all Hispanics are what you are saying, so don’t generalize. Everyone can make mistakes with contracts, or you haven’t read about the kid from 2 and a half man? Uhh… Where is he from? Should they write that contract in what language?

  • Clay

Sounds like someone needed a better agent/lawyer but this makes me feel even more nauseated about Nickelodeon in general. There entire lineup is either animated shows or teeny-bop sitcoms based on girl bands/boy bands. All of it is ridiculously cheap to produce and little kids and teens keep watching/buying every second.

The least they could do is pay whatever actress is voicing Dora enough money to keep her family happy/quiet. It’s just good PR.

  • Tombo

Why is Dora even shown in Canada; we have no spanish population (> 1%). It’d be like showing a German Dora in the States, a lot of mouths would drop!

    • abeeotch

      NEWSFLASH!!!

Dora isn’t just for Hispanic girls!

  • Rush

Nickelodeon (psst, owned by Viacom, a competitor of EW’s parent company TimeWarner, full disclosure anyone?) exploiting an underage migrant worker? SHOCKING!

  • Rush

Their complaint is that the contract wasn’t translated into spanglish.
