Darren Aronofsky being courted for 'Superman': Report

Tags: , Movies

Sources tell the LA Times that Christopher Nolan, producer on Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot, has initiated discussions with director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) to helm the film. Zach Snyder, Let Me In‘s Matt Reeves, and a slew of veteran filmmakers are said to also be in the mix.

Good news if you ask me.

    • jon

      His movies are too depressing.

      • Brian

Both of their movies are too dark. Nolan isn’t the right choice to helm Superman either.

Finally, I can put Aronofsky’s Superman next to my Ang Lee Hulk on my mantle! Still waiting for Akira Kurasowa’s Pirates of the Carribean 3D.

      • Brian

Personally, I’m waiting for Quentin Tarantino’s Spider-man and Steven Spielberg’s Punisher. haha

  • harry

    awesome!!!!

  • rerun

Not too sure about this. “The Wrestler” was really good but doesn’t give a “this guy should direct Superman” vibe. Nevermind the pretentious crap like “The Fountain”. And yes, I though Nolan, Favreau, and Whedon were all good fits for their comic projects.

      I agree 100%.

Just glad that Bryan Singer isn’t directing. That last movie was awful and as much as we’d all like to blame Kate Bosworth’s terrible performance, she wasn’t responsible for the casting, writing, acting and directing being a complete fail. That’s the director’s fault.

    • Kate

Superman Returns has a 76& overall at Rotten Tomatoes, so it’s really not as bad as you’re making it out to be.

      • NO

        Says who? RT? It sucked!

    • reason

Agree with Kate, in fact I think this very magazine gave the movie and A or A-?? Bad box office does not equal a bad movie.

I think “Superman Returns” is severely underrated. It wasn’t perfect– I love Kate Bosworth but she was badly miscast, it was about 20 minutes too long, and there was a lot more Superman-angst than was necessary. But it was ambitious and tried to do something different with a character that has basically been done to death. I’d rather be disappointed by an ambitious movie that doesn’t entirely succeed than watch another cookie-cutter superhero movie.

      • Brian

Not much of it was different, minus the baby angle and the additional angst. I don’t mind the baby thing, it’s the “Superman’s a deadbeat dad and Lois doesn’t even know who he is” part that bothers me.
It was pretty much the first Donner movie remade, right down to Routh playing Reeve playing Superman/Clark. That was another big problem for me–I don’t like Donner’s version. Reeve’s portrayal is awesome in a technical sense, but the character is too one-sided, with his human side being completely shelved early on in favor of total Kryptonian. And what’s the point of having such a unique origin if you’re going to ignore half of it?

OK time out, do you guys really remember the movie or not? Do you remember how dreary the cinematography was, how utterly boring the script was, how absolutely terrible Kate Bosworth was, or how much of a joke they made Lex Luthor out to be (coupled with Spacey’s horrendous and outlandish acting).

It was as bad for the Superman franchise as Batman and Robin was to the Batman franchise.

Superman needs to have a more serious story (and be uplifting) and Nolan can do those things well.

      • Brian

When has Nolan ever been uplifting though? Most of his movies end with the hero a villain somewhat, trapped in their own delusions, or both.
I like his movies, but “uplifting” they are not.

  • chelsea

Unpopular opinion it seems, but I actually really loved “Superman Returns” and I wouldn’t mind Bryan Singer directing again.

  • The Jackal

Not a good movie. It cracks me up when I see Lois being thrown around the plane like a rag doll yet has no cut, bruise, or broken bones.

    • Earthshawn

Of course…because any time Lois was knocked about or put in physical jeopardy in the comics, she always went right to the emergency room and remained in traction for several issues thereafter…

      • reason

        THIS!

    • Brian

The rediculous part of that scene that was very un-Lois like is when she faints because Superman’s returned. Lois wouldn’t faint. She’d instantly jump into questioning him on why he left.

This is terrible news. I for one won’t go see any Superman flick Aronofsky helms. He’s a talented director no doubt (although not to my taste) but absolutely the wrong choice for Superman. Superman is a much more bright and sunny, optimistic character and Aronofsky does dark. Not every comic book character needs the Dark Knight treatment. Superman needs someone with a lighter touch IMO.

    • Jeff

Why can’t Superman be somewhat dark? He could be a mix of a lighterside and then darker. Didn’t he die in the comics at one point? That wasn’t on the light side of things.

    • TGH

We’ve seen Superman as an optimist. If the new franchise is going to be successful, it needs to go in another direction. Aronofsky more than anything can make something that seems like a weird (or even bad) idea into something great… Remember when you heard he was making a movie about professional wrestling? Look how that turned out. Furthermore, Nolan has perfect taste and knows film better than any of us. If he think Aronofsky is the right pick, than that’s good enough for me.

      • Brian

Nolan does not have perfect taste when it comes to superheroes. Begins is barely a superhero movie and TDK is effectively about a cop-figure who dresses up like a bat. You can’t make a good superhero movie by leaving all the superhero elements out.
As for Superman, he’s an optimist. That’s core to his character and changing it means doing someone who isn’t Superman. It’d be like making Batman a happy guy. The world can be dark, but Superman HAS to be a beacon of light in that dark world.

  • ®ustymustdie

who is slated to star as superman?

  • NO

Leave Superman alone Hollywood. He is not the hero for the times. It’s Christopher Reeve and it will be for years.

  • ajay C

I really loved and enjoyed the nostalgic factor of Superman Returns.

  • Jack

Since Smallville is ending I say use Tom Welling. He would make a great Superman on the big screen.

    • Brian

I agree. And Erica Durance as Lois, Michael McKean as Perry White, and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor.
BUT…I’d want the show’s writers to work on the movie, not Nolan. Like Nolan’s original works a lot, but his Batman stuff is lacking, and I can’t see him write a hopeful/optimistic character like Superman at all.

  • marc

superman returns was awesome IMO.. and that plane scene in particular was great.. the nostalgia of superman flying around saving the day was paricularly cool from a new yorkers perspective in a post 9-11 world which i felt singer purposely portraed..

  • jake

Aronofsky is certainly an intriguing choice, but does anyone really believe it’s going to happen?
Reeves is a “safer” (albeit less interesting) pick.
Just pray they don’t cop out and give it to a hack like Bret Ratner.

  • TBFan

I still think Brandon Routh was incredible (and, like Bosworth, not responsible for the horrible writing) and he should don the cape once again. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with his performance. Though I’ll never be over Chris Reeve, Routh did him justice.

  • jason eric

i dont care who they get as long as Tom Welling plays Superman! say what you will about Smallville, T.W. would make an excellent Man of Steel!
