Bandleader Max Weinberg won't be following Conan O'Brien to TBS

Max Weinberg won’t be part of Conan O’Brien’s new late night talk show on TBS, the late night talk show host confirmed. Weinberg, also well-known for his drum work with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, served as the comedian’s bandleader on Late Night with Conan O’Brien show and The Tonight Show. In an interview with St. Louis’ Riverfront Times, musician Jimmy Vivino says that he’ll be leading the band on O’Brien’s new show, Conan, which launches on Nov. 8. Vivino played guitar and keyboards as a member of the Max Weinberg 7 on O’Brien’s shows. James Wormworth will replace Weinberg on drums.

UPDATE: Both Weinberg and Conan O’Brien have issued statements about the band leader’s departure, which they claim was “mutual.” “Max has been a huge part of my life for the past 17 years and he is an incredible band leader and musician. I hope he can find time to stop by the new show, sit in with the band, and pretend to find my monologue funny,” O’Brien said in a statement. Said Weinberg, “17 years — a lifetime on TV. Conan and I met on a New York City street corner in the Spring of 1993 and my association with Conan, his staff, and crew has been a deeply rewarding experience for me. And, making music with Jimmy Vivino, Mark Pender, La Bamba, Scott Healey, Mike Merritt, and percussionist James Wormsworth enabled me to become a better musician and bandleader. I thank them for their first-rate work on the bandstand. I wish Conan and his show the best and I do look forward to dropping by.”

That is sad news, for their first musical guest they should have Jennette McCurdy sing and interview the entire cast of iCarly!!!!

    • jules

      …um…why?

      • lorrie taylor

i don’t know for sure but rumors was that he’d been fired by conan
himself for muteny against him it was said he’d been over herd talking to a friend that he wanted to try playing in jay lenos band when they all broke up conan must had still been heart broken and with knowing his life long friend wanted to leave for jay put him over the edge and he fired max so it was said.

      • TGH

Lorrie’s reason sounds completely made up.

      • Fred

        Because Jerry Trainor is HILARIOUS!!!!!!

      • UGH

        Jerry Trainor hilarious?
More like a Jim Carrey wannabe.

      • kar

This was reported months ago when Conan was cancelled. Max was pretty blunt about cozying up to Leno.

I think it’s going to be interesting to see how saicol media marketing may really branch away from SEO too. To a certain extent, I expect that we’ll all see increasing traffic levels from saicol media properties, with a resulting decrease in the proportion of searches from the main players in the search engine market.

And then there can be a Christmas special with Spongebob Squarepants, and Dora the Explorer!

        Right on!!!!!

    • Jaaamie

      Bazinga!

  • Dave

Kinda bummed. I loved his interactions with Max. At least the rest of the band will still be there, though. I would have been upset if we lost both Max and LaBamba.

    • Karina

yeah at least we still have la bamba…..but still no more creepy max jokes :(

    • Lucy

huge LaBamba fan here…use to follow his band around the Jersey shore and even Vermont “LaBamba and the Hubcaps”!!!

Well, I feel sheepish that my barhteling made anyone feel sheepish. Certainly nothing aimed at anyone specifically, just a list of things I scroll past without reading. Plus #4 should make it clear that I’m mostly holding people to unattainable standards of perfection while entertaining me. I myself am guilty of it JUST LAST NIGHT.Conan, though what am I missing? The last time I watched Conan was in 2004 and I couldn’t believe how not funny it was.

  • Wes

I’ve never seen iCarly, but I find it hard to believe it warrants four exclamation points.

    • j.p.

      it doesn’t.

      • Fred

        It warrants 5 x 10^10000000 exclamation points

    • Kristen

      Your right, it doesn’t!!!!

      • Fred

        Your wrong, it does !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Lucy

        you both are wrong…it’s you’re

      • Your mom

Phew! What would we all have done without your correction Lew’cee?

    • calm down gramps

Someone is a bitter old man…!!!!

    • Your mom

      It does deserve a few ¡¡¡¡ though…

  • Tom

Eh. I always liked him but once they brought Andy Richter back to the show, I thought Max Weinberg became sort of a third wheel

    • Shannon

Yeah, you’re right. Max sorta faded into the background. Not as many awkward stares exchanged between him and Conan.

      • M

The rest of the band has been having more interaction and attention when they moved out West. Plus, he was always gone for tours anyway. They don’t need him anymore.

  • theBigE

    Is Andy coming along?

    • Shannon

      Yes.

  • Jeff

Apparently, a lot of Conan’s employees did not like Max. They are probably happy he is gone. Plus he tried to be Leno’s bandleader.
    Good Riddance!

    • Shannon

      Seriously?
      What a traitor!

      • lorrie taylor

i don’t think that was it really its what they said but i don’t think so

  • Shannon

    That’s disappointing.
First Joel Goddard’s exit, now this.
Ah well, ‘least we’re getting Conan back.
And maybe Max will make a surprise appearance at some point.

    • lorrie taylor

i think that he will return i think hes just starring up things for conan’s big boost as a ratings thing

  • Noelle

    NOOOOOOOO!!

  • Jess

    It’s all Jay Leno’s fault! And NBC’s! And George W. Bush’s, too!

    • cameobrooch

And Jay Leno has a big chin and his fans are old and stupid!

  • Dan

Am I the only one that thought Andy Richter kind of stunk? Not saying this is what it came down to, but if it was a choice between keeping Max or Andy, they should have went with Max.

    • Samantha

I thought Andy was funny, but I loved Max just as much. I missed him on The Tonight Show because they didn’t use him as much…I miss their long monologue arguments

  • Dumbledore Fluffernutter

This is not even news. It was announced months ago that Max would not be a part of this new show.

  • dakmart

Given what Max’s work load must have been like over the last decade, between the show and the revived E Street Band, one can forgive him for wanting to move on, and this was the right time to do so. It may also have been a case where Conan’s production company may have needed to cut a large salary — you can be sure that TBS is not paying Conan the same fee for producing the show that NBC did.

  • Ashley

Thank goodness. He was always the worst part of the show to me. I didn’t find him funny at all, he just annoyed me.

  • Al

The show won’t have the same budget as the Tonight Show. They can’t bring everyone.

  • Preston

I thought that Max Weinberg had a good run with Conan O’Brien’s live band on NBC. But he’s with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and he would rather focus on touring with Bruce than the trappings of a TV studio. He’s more into stadiums and arenas than the TV image he had to face for 17 years with Conan. That said, I liked how fun he had drumming on Conan’s show–looked like he was sweating under those lights after hitting those drums hard.
