Police shoot and kill Discovery Channel gunman, hostages safe

Categories:

The Montgomery County Police have confirmed with EW that authorities have shot down James J. Lee, the gunman who took three people hostage at Discovery Channel’s corporate headquarters today in Silver Spring, Md., and the Associated Press is reporting that he subsequently died. All hostages escaped, and are now safe.

According to Corporal Dan Friz, an explosive device might have detonated during the ordeal: “There was a minor detonation of it, but luckily no injuries to anybody,” he told EW. Back in 2008, Lee was arrested for disorderly conduct in front of the building after he led a protest against the network. His motives apparently stem from his efforts to save the planet. On a website registered to Lee, a statement criticizing the network was posted in January 2008: “These guys have been very sneaky and deceptive as to their contribution to the planetary problems. Just look at their ‘new’ show about saving the planet, Planet Green, to me, it’s just another show about more PRODUCTS to make MONEY, not about actual solutions. We can’t let them get away with doing it anymore.”

According to Friz, the building is still being cleared.

He was an hero! Why did they have to kill him?

    • Amanda

That’s not even funny – he was holding innocent people hostage!

      • jambi

He’s in heaven now I guess. One Love.

        -____- You’re new to the internet, aren’t you…

    • qwerty

Fake Ceballos, obviously. I don’t get why anyone would want to discredit him. He’s like the nicest commenter here! There needs to be a real login system.

      • Brian

There really does need to be a real login system.

      • iChinkSo

        Yeah..A real one.

      • Supafly

        It’s a 4chan thing obv.

    • Bob

      Are you really that stupid?

    • Fero

he wanted to finish it. He knew he would find there a trigger-happy motherfu… that would do it for him if he held out long enough.
strange way to get attention so. He would have been beter off paying more attention to the drug commercials while watching Discovery. might have learned about prozac or somethig equally beneficial to him.

    • Ceballos

      Fake me,

I just don’t even know what to say anymore.

(Other than to say that I’m a little bit ashamed about the fact that I found the grammatical mistake “an hero” almost as offensive as the content of your ridiculous post.)

      • Ruth

Oh thank goodness I’m not the only one!!! :)

      • Jim

The remark may have been offensive, but the person who posted it was utilizing an internet meme. To “an hero” means, essentially, to commit suicide. It is used generally to mock a person.

      • Ceballos

Thanks Jim…I was not aware of that Internet meme.

Now that we’ve established that it’s not grammatically incorrect, we can put the focus back on how offensive the content of the remark was.

      • RaRa

Yes, thanks, Jim. I was not aware of that either. You’ll learn something every day, if you’re not careful!

    • rohan

      seriously ur wierd

    • desraile

he is nothing more than a bloody christian terrorist.

      • Dumbace

LOL christian terrorist… Blame the Christians now… funny joke… A guy walks into the Discovery channel building with a gun…stop me if you heard this one…. and some nut wackjob blames it on every christian that every lived.

      • Daywalker

Wow, a Christian terrorist. Way to be discriminatory.

      • cati

Christian terrorist?? What a f—–g moron you are desraile.

    • Thomas Alex

How was he a hero? Who did he save?

    • kma777

He is Al Gore’s poster child, even though Al Gore is no environmentalist. Just 1 of his mansions uses over 20 times the gas and electric as the average American home. He just wants people to buy carbon credits from his company. Money thats all he is concerned about.

      • @kma777

Al Gore uses alternate forms of energy for that home, which includes offices for his company. His carbon footprint is zero for the building. That’s the goal, to decrease your carbon footprint, not to cut your power usage. Carbon is what is causing the problem.

      • Desmo

So is he still flying around in private jets or is he humming in coach like the rest of us?

    • Dumbace

Why do we give idiots one second of our time ?

  • Brian

    He’s a nutjob, nothing more.

    • Jonathan

Nope, he’s a liberal hard-core environmentalist. He’s Al Gore cranked to 11 and probably without the romantic challenges.

      • nodnarb

Yup, and the Muslim cabbie stabber is a conservative hard-core teabagger. He’s Glenn Beck cranked to 11 and probably without the fake tears. Look, we can all play that game!

      • bob

I agree 100% it’s just to bad he had to die. I’m sure he wanted the best for the earth and it’s people he just lost it. He could have recovered.

      • kma777

Al Gore is no environmentalist. Just 1 of his mansions uses over 20 times the gas and electric as the average American home. He just wants people to buy carbon credits from his company. Money thats all he is concerned about.

      • Thomas Alex

        @bob
Your crazy. He took people hostage, therefor they killed him.

      • Salamantis

Umm…the cabbie-stabber was a member of a pro-Ground-Zero-Mosque group. He was just trying to make its opponents look bad, and didn’t expect to be apprehended.

  • qwerty

Why is Entertainment Weekly bothering the police, this doesn’t have to do with Entertainment…I don’t care about the channel.

    • Desmo

I don’t think they are bothering the police any more then other news outlets.

    • maggie

I think EW is reporting this because it involves a TV network. The gunman disliked Discovery networks (which includes TLC) programming. He thought it encouraged people to have lots of children, which causes stress on the planet. He wanted more environmentally responsible programming. Good ideas, but his warped mind caused him to take horrific actions to try to force them to do what he wanted.

    • Max

So they actually forgot to call you and ask permission before publishing this news about a channel you don’t watch. Shame EW…

  • Mitch

Wow, it’s just entertainment. I grew up on the Looney Tooney’s, and I only tried to drop an anvil on someone’s head once. Luckily he just flattened out and turned into an accordian for awhile.

    • Fik

Ding Ding Ding!! We have a winner!! Top 5 post, Mitch!

  • bdp

so he is officially dead? good.

  • iChinkSo

He was part of the Owl Gore Martyrs Brigade. His new role will to serve as a “Virgin” for the other martyrs. YEAH!!!!

  • dasser

The man is or was a raving lunatic. The environment is a noble cause, but choosing the planet over your own species is all kinds of anti-social nonsense.

Also, horrible logic to assume that we can’t coexist safely within the environment. And to cap it all of, irony of ironies he seems to favor a darwinistic view in parts of his “manifesto”… Darwin wrote of survival of the fittest. If we adapt the world to suit us, its because we are the fittest. Any steps we take to preserve other, less fit creatures is just out of altruism and a sense of responsibility. (fake morals, as Lee puts it)

    • Rob

I agree with your main point, that the man was a raving lunatic. I want to ignore him at this point and address some of your other points.

Siding with the environment, if it’s truly in so much danger, *is siding with your own species. If our species can’t survive the mess we make, then we’re boned.

Also, Darwin wrote nothing of survival of the fittest (that was his supporter Huxley, if I recall). The gist of Darwin’s message is “survival of the just fit enough.” You don’t have to be the best; you just have to be good enough. Darwin’s theory is pass/fail, basically.

This undermines the rest of that argument of yours. While the conclusion may stand, your premises do not support it.

      • dasser

It only undermines my point if you dismiss Huxley based only on the fact that he’s not darwin. Just because I got the source wrong (and freely admit it) does not discredit the information.

      • Desmo

Blah blah blah I hug trees.

      • RaRa

Desmo – that gave me the first laugh of the day!

  • Nate

wow talk about misdirected rage. Dude should had payed Al Gore a visit instead.

    • yvonne

I can think of a few more to use that misdirected rage on.

      • Stevex

Alex, I’ll take “Quitter Alaskan Governors’ for $500, please.

    • Hey Nate

Al Gore isn’t the guy who was making him mad. He was mad at people like Jon & Kate and the Duggars, who became famous for having lots of babies. Discovery owns TLC. He may have been crazy, but he knew who he was mad at and why.

  • Roger C.

He probably snapped when he found out Man vs. Wild was fake.

    • StrangerInAStrangeLand

      Now that’s funny.

How strange he would target Discovery of all places.

  • j-dizzle

He got his wish– surplus population has been decreased by one. Scrooge would’ve been proud.

    • ho-bizzle

I would of taking out HBO instead….for all the crap programs on that channel. JMO

  • DonM

He is happier now. The logical conclusion of his philosophy is for all “Greenies” to die suddenly, by their own hand. Of course suicide by cop ignores the costs to society and to the cop who has to take action to protect others.

    • yvonne

But he wanted babies dead – ne thought they were “disgusting human babies,” “parasitic infants,” and says people should “disassemble civilization.”
The man was sick, truly sick!

      • huh

He wanted Discovery networks, which owns TLC, to stop glorifying people who have too many babies. The guy was sick, but there is a point that rational people can take that it is not healthy for the mother, the children or the planet, for women to give birth to litters of children.

  • Brian

It may be fair to note that he did have a history of mental illness. Sad world full of sad events.

    • yvonne

      Well spoken!

    • nc

having a history of mental illness is a prerequisite for being a liberal environut.

    • Anonymous

Did you have a history of mental illness Mr. Peppers? I don’t think so. It was merely a cry for help from the nurse…

  • jram

expect more of this from the global warming nut jobs. They will find out soon enough that those of us who work and have nice homes and cars aren’t gonna give em up just because a bunch of lunatics think the world is gonna burst into flames. Climate Change is the latest nut job religion out there.

    • John Savard

Global Warming is the consensus of the scientific community, so it’s reality. But I’m glad no one was hurt except the crazy hostage taker.

      • Mac

Right, those 2000-something names, John? What about all the people on there which have been lobbying to be removed? Anybody vaguely associated with contents of the report were listed as part of the ‘scientific consensus’ regardless of their agreement with the report’s conclusion. A conclusion which was obviously flawed (what Greenland? what middle ages hot period?) and shown to have entire sections quoted ad-lib from such ‘reliable data’ as unscientific opinion pieces in WWF material.

      • dumptruck

What?!? On what planet? The planet for the terminally unable to read for themselves?

      • @Mac

You watch too much Fox Noise.
