Bullock, Hanks eyed for 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close': Report

Categories: Books, Movie Biz, Movies

Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks have received offers to star in the adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Variety reports. The novel, published in 2005, is set in 2003 and narrated by 9-year-old Oskar Schell, a precocious New York City kid whose father died in 9/11. As EW wrote when reviewing it: “In a vase high in his father’s closet, Oskar finds a key in an envelope on which someone has scrawled ‘Black.’ Armed with iodine tablets (in case of a dirty bomb attack) and Juicy Juice boxes, Oskar sets out to visit, on foot, every Black in the New York City phone book, hoping to find the lock that fits his father’s key. In the course of his travels, he meets a deaf 103-year-old war correspondent who hasn’t left his apartment in 24 years, a dotty widow who lives on the observation deck of the Empire State Building, and a silent stranger who turns out to be his own long-lost grandfather…. a treasure: Oskar’s wonderfully unquiet brain and his sweet soul, his ageless questions, silly school jokes, uncanny observations, and raw misery, all of which bring home a little more of the specific human pain of 9/11.” Three-time Oscar nominee Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliott) is attached to direct, and Eric Roth (an Oscar winner for Forrest Gump) has been tapped to write the screenplay. Warner Bros. and Paramount have not yet officially greenlit the film, to be produced by Oscar winner Scott Rudin (No County for Old Men), Variety reports. Nor have Bullock and Hanks entered formal negotiations.

Wyclef Jean reverses position, says he WILL contest Haiti presidency disqualification

Categories: Music, Politics

Wyclef Jean announced in a statement today that he plans to contest the Haiti board of elections’ decision to exclude him from the country’s upcoming presidential election. (The board ruled that Jean — who was born in Haiti but spent most of his life in the U.S. — was not eligible to run for the presidency because he did not meet the country’s residency requirements.) While the singer said yesterday that he “respectfully accept[ed]“ that ruling as final, his latest statement tells a different story.

“After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have made the decision to contest Haiti’s board of election’s pronouncement stating that I am ineligible to run for the presidency of the country,” Jean’s statement said. “I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process…. I cannot surrender now, simply because an obstacle has been set before me; now is the time I must stand up and show Haiti — and the world — that my vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight.”
