Wyclef Jean resigns as head of Yéle Haiti charity

Categories:

Musician and activist Wyclef Jean has resigned as leader of the Yéle Haiti foundation he founded five years ago to raise money and build awareness of his embattled and impoverished homeland, the Associated Press reports. Preparing to formally declare his candidacy for the Haitian presidency, the singer released a statement this morning that confirmed he was resigning the chairmanship of Yéle Haiti, effective immediately.

“I am not stepping down in my commitment to Haiti,” he says in the statement. “On the contrary, regardless of what path I take next, one thing is certain: My focus on helping Haiti turn a new corner will only grow stronger.” Businessman Derek Q. Johnson will now lead the organization. Yéle Haiti raised $9 million in the wake of the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 300,000 people, though it did meet heavy scrutiny amid allegations of misappropriations of funds raised.

Jean is expected to announce his presidential intentions tonight on Larry King Live.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell testifies in 'Blood Diamonds' Case

Categories:

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was in the Netherlands Thursday to testify at a UN war-crimes tribunal that former Liberian ruler Charles Taylor gave her blood diamonds, People reports. Taylor allegedly exchanged guns for uncut diamonds with  Sierra Leone rebels during the country’s 1992-2002 civil war. He’s pleaded not guilty to 11 war crimes charges, including murder, rape, sexual enslavement, and recruiting child soldiers included.

Campbell originally did not want to testify for fear that she or her family would be harmed by Taylor or his soldiers, but was subpoenaed and forced to take the stand. She allegedly received the diamonds after attending a dinner party hosted by Nelson Mandela in South Africa in 1997.

She testified that two men knocked on her door late one night, recalling “They said, ‘A gift for you,’ and then gave me a pouch … I took it, said, ‘Thank you,’ and closed the door. There was no explanation, no note. When they gave me the pouch I just put it close to my bed and went back to bed.” The following morning, she said, “I opened the pouch … I saw a few stones. They were very small, dirty-looking stones.”

Prop. 8 overturned in California

Categories:

Proposition 8 — which ruled same-sex couples could not marry in California — was overturned in the state today by a judge claiming the proposition was unconstitutional. Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that due-process and equal-protection clauses conflicted with the proposition.

The overturning of the 2008 proposition was fueled by several Hollywood figures, like Bruce Cohen, Rob Reiner, and Dustin Lance Black, who all encouraged attorneys Theodore Olson and David Boies to head the case, The Hollywood Reporter reports. “It was a great moment,” Cohen said. “We were hoping that Judge Walker, when he heard all the evidence which we heard in court, would come to the conclusion that there is no doubt that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, but to have it be official and to see it…is incredibly thrilling and exciting.”

Several other celebs went to Twitter to celebrate the announcement. Ellen DeGeneres Tweeted, “Equality won!” while wife Portia de Rossi wrote, “I am ecstatic that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California. This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all.” Even Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took to his Twitter: “This decision affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves.”
