Wyclef Jean announced in a statement today that he plans to contest the Haiti board of elections’ decision to exclude him from the country’s upcoming presidential election. (The board ruled that Jean — who was born in Haiti but spent most of his life in the U.S. — was not eligible to run for the presidency because he did not meet the country’s residency requirements.) While the singer said yesterday that he “respectfully accept[ed]“ that ruling as final, his latest statement tells a different story.
“After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have made the decision to contest Haiti’s board of election’s pronouncement stating that I am ineligible to run for the presidency of the country,” Jean’s statement said. “I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process…. I cannot surrender now, simply because an obstacle has been set before me; now is the time I must stand up and show Haiti — and the world — that my vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight.”

Should the next president really be someone who can’t even make up his mind about whether he’s running?
If you don’t have nothing to say ,plz shut up you.Wyclef Jean is The Haitian leader and The haitian people want him for president.Ou se yon kadejake ou se yon sans konsans,ou rayi pep Ayisyen an.Viv Wyclef Jean ,Viv Wyclef jean for president.
Absolutely laughable.
Wyclef just needs to get off his high-horse of entitlement and focus on what he does–what ever that is!…I really hate when artists, or so-called artists think they can automatically assume positions of power on a whim, like being president. Wyclef singlehandedly ruined the, “We Are the World” remake and now he wants to tackle something he has zero knowledge about and zero qualifications for. Give it a rest Wyclef!
I’d forgotten that horrific remake. Another strike against him.
He’s just an idiot. Although if he were to become the President of Haiti that would mean that he wouldn’t be in the U.S. anymore right? Maybe it’s not such a bad idea…
That mans vision is about his ego more than helping that country. If he really wanted this the right way for the right reasons, he would pack his bags and reside there for the 5 years needed to be eligible and show some real commitment to this country
I was thinking the same thing.
This is nothing more than a publicity stunt on this guy’s part, as he could care less about his nation, but a way to further his image.
I love how all of you say that he is just doing this for publicity when you don’t know the guy at all. I’m not saying he isn’t doing it for publicity. I’m just saying that everyone that claims he is has absolutely no evidence to back that claim up. Maybe you guys should reserve your judgments for people you actually know.
What a vain fool.
If he runs and wins, will Shakira be in his government?
LOL! XD
Wow, talk about an ego. He wants politics to have more integrity and be less corrupt, yet he wants the board to overlook the fact that he is not a physical resident of the country? He says he respected the decision that was made, but now he’s going to contest it? He’s so full of sh**. None of this nonsense about “home is where the heart is.” Maybe his heart was in Haiti, but he sure wasn’t. And his heart being there is sure as heck not enough. If he really cared about helping the country, he would pack his bags and go live there for the next several years, and then try for political office. But apparently, he only cares about his own image and massive ego.
Right. Just what that country needs: another politician who doesn’t respect the laws of the country. Sounds like he will fit right in to Haitian politics.
THAT’S YOU OPINON
HI I WANT WYCLEF JEAN FOR PRESIDENT HAITI
Shady.
Rule of law, schmule of law!
The last thing Haiti needs is a leader who respects and follows the laws of the land or obeys the Haitian Constitution.
And, hey, if that leader is an outsider who can’t even be bothered to learn to speak the nation’s native language and made (and keeps) his money in America, all the better!
What could possibly go wrong…
Some of these comments are too much. The man was in the Fugees for crying out loud. THE FUGEES! What other qualifications does he need to lead a poor, devastated country back to some kind of stability? Nobody else can funnel financial aid for their own personal material possessions better than he could.
Of course! He’s a celebrity, and celebrities should be able to do whatever they want because they are simply better than the rest of us nobodies!
Hey, my friends! Are you looking for romantic and great looking soulmate?
“(( R i c h f l i r t s — C_o_m))” has more than 1200,000 members…..you are welcomed to have a try, maybe you will be very lucky to find someone in a short time?
I think his punishment should be…make him actually live in the aids-infested toilet that is Haiti. And make him live amongst the subhuman, wretched beggars that are the Haitian people!
What a pathetic, wretched, racist comment. Johnification, you are an example of everything that is wrong with free speech. What a racist idiot.
You’re right Chris, free speech is wrong! Why don’t we all move to China, you first!
What a joke. He wants to rule a country based on what? His vast political experience? His experience in running a company, government, anything? How self absorbed can a person be — he thinks he’s their savior. Why? Because he spent 5 minutes there as a child. He wants to rule a country yet he doesn’t even respect their laws. Not to mention he can’t make a decision. “I respect their laws, no, wait, I don’t respect their laws. Oh, wait, what did the speech writer tell me to say again???”
