Betty White, Neil Patrick Harris, John Lithgow, and Ann-Margret were among the actors honored at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, the Associated Press reports. All four won in categories honoring guest appearances: White for hosting Saturday Night Live, Harris for appearing on Glee, Lithgow for Dexter, and Ann-Margret for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Survivor host (and EW.com blogger) Jeff Probst won his third straight Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.
Many of the Emmys given out this afternoon were for technical categories like casting and make-up. With 17 trophies (seven for The Pacific), HBO took home more than any other network. The Emmys Web site has a full list of winners. (The ceremonywill be turned into a two-hour special on E!, airing Aug. 27.) The main Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Aug. 29.

Why they relegated these categories to the creative emmys is beyond me. What a no-brainer to have Betty White accepting her award during the actual telecast. I’d want to see all 4 of them accept. They better not pull a Lauren Bacall on them and just have them stand up while everybody claps.
Best Variety Series belongs to ConeBone69!!! :p
The list of winners said Betty White wasn’t present to accept her award-she probably had to work-lol
The “Guest” categories are normally done at the Creative Arts ceremony. They then usually have the two winners (male and female) come on the broadcast to present a category.
Like 3-6 more categories will really effect the six hour long award show anyway. The least they can do is have “all” of the front of the camera people whom the public recognizes and loves, either present or come in group acknowledgement
Exactly, why are they sticking actors people want to see somewhere other than the main show?
They do. Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake made speeches last year.
This category is so much more interesting that all the mini-series/movie categories. Can’t we move those to the technical night instead?
I love NPH, I really do, but that Emmy should’ve been O’Malley’s. Then again, his scenes were never quite “comedic”, so I suppose it’s understandable.
There was a lot of speculation about how the votes would go, given that O’Malley’s scenes were dramatic. NPH gave a nice shout-out to O’Malley in his speech apparently.
I don’t like NPH and he should be punched in the ear for taking O’Malley’s Emmy.
You disliking him doesn’t change the fact that his performance was very good.
NPH won because voters threw him a bone for NOT giving him the Emmy for HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Jeremy Piven and Jon Cryer have won. Given this award, it looks unlikely he’ll win this year…again.
Oh, here we go. Not only is NPH apparently RIPPING babies from their mothers, NOW he’s RIPPING away awards, too! Does this man have no soul? Ah ha ha ha ha ha haaaa!
AND l just noticed he’s holding TWO… Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
I really think Mike O’Malley should have won, though I see how NPH may have been seen as more comedic. O’malley was both funny and serious, and I think his work was quieter than the more in you face Bryan Ryan material NPH had.
Maybe there just was no good nominee in this category? Who died and made Mike O’Malley funny? You have to play a *character* to win an Emmy, not just a likable father.
Zach, he did play a character–he added warmth, depth, subtle humorous touches, and showed a level of emotion never before seen in any work of O’Malley’s I’ve ever seen. NPH’s win was definitely a compensation prize for never (including in the future) awarding him an Emmy. So, he got a Schmemmy.
But NPH is due, so it’s fine. Hosting, acting, singing, etc., he’s just great. But O’Malley getting nominated at least proves they can forgive him for Yes, Dear; a courtesy that Katey Sagal and Ed O’Neill cannot seem to get due to Married…With Children, despite turning in excellent, career-best work in Sons of Anarchy and Modern Family, respectively.
I think they both deserve it. Neil Patrick Harris’s episode was one of my favorites of the second half of the season, if not my absolute favorite. On the other hand, Mike O’Malley has consistently turned in a good, subtle performance every episode that he’s in. I guess that O’Malley has a chance at winning next year if the show stays strong.
So true. O’Malley really brought a whole new level to the show. I would have liked to have seen his work rewareded.
totally agree with you. I love NPH as well, he was awesome in Glee. But it should have been Kurt’s Dad for the win!
I am a huge fan of Neil Patrick Harris and think he’s incredibly funny and talented, but Guest Actor in a Comedy Series belongs to Mike O’Malley 100%. I agree with a couple people here who are saying that he probably didn’t win because his scenes were more dramatic than anything else. It’s a shame though.
I also feel Mike should have won. It’s best actor on a comedy, which does not mean funniest, either. NPH’s character wasn’t funny – just a darker version of Barney. BTW, I do love NPH, but Mike’s performance was much more nuanced – maybe Wheels wasn’t the best episode for him to use for his nomination.
I agree that that Emmy should have gone to Mike O’Malley. NPH already has won for the Tony Awards. Let Mike have this one!
no emmy for Kathy griffin???!!
she was robbed!
Jaime Oliver can suck it!!
the material she gets from losing to ryan seacrest should be amazing.
Used to love her, but she’s gotten really uncharming over the last year or so…
She’s no different than before. Except she’s leading protests against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and getting pap smears in public to promote cervical cancer awareness.
Aw, I was really hoping Alan would win. :/
And it really doesn’t make sense that the guest actor awards aren’t during the telecast.
Also, Anne Hathway won! Woot!
Elizabeth Mitchell was robbed!
I adore Ann-Margaret, but ELIZABETH MITCHELL SHOULD’VE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What? For a show about purgatory that pretty much put its viewers through a six-year joke? Haha. Yeah right.
She should have gotten a nomination and win for Lost seasons ago.
I agree. I don’t get why they always give the guest Emmys to people from Law and Order.
Because, Amy, it’s an acting showcase. They can chew scenery and show off their mad acting skillz to their peers, challenging them to do better in their own guest spots, haha.
What’s worse though is that even goddess Angela Lansbury cannot get proper respect via an SVU appearance–losing to Amanda Plummer, who guest starred on a different episode. Poor dame. She needs to be the very first recipient of an honorary Emmy–something they oughta consider doing next year.
Man, WE were robbed. Why should I watch the other show next week. When these four stellar performers and their awards presentations were denied all of us?
I mean – I could care less about the rest next week. Betty White’s stint on SNL was the best thing t.v. produced all last year.
they usually get to present at the emmys.
You COULD care less? I believe you mean you couldn’t care less.
What does NHP do to deserve even a nomination from his guest stint on Glee ? The voters favor the favorite as usual.
Considering NPH never won an Emmy before tonight despite being nominated mulptiple times, I think it’s safe to say it really was his turn. Plus, he held his own in scenes with Jane Lynch, which alone should merit a nomination.
No one should be given an award simply because it’s “their turn”. It should be given because their performance in that particular year is award-worthy.
I agree, but what I meant was that the Emmys are known for holding out years to give awards to deserving people. Steve Carell was deserving for many years, but what he ever awarded? No, but I’d bet my left arm that he’ll win next year seeing as it’s his last season even if the writing isn’t up to par again. I agree that the performance should be the deciding factor (and NPH certainly deserved it), but unfortunately it isn’t always, as I’m sure we’ll see when the ever-deserving Jim Parsons loses to the sentimental favorite, Tony Shalhoub.
Totally agree. I loved his scene with Jane Lynch.
Well, he was very funny, for starters.
He was very funny and did some fantastic singing with Matthew Morrison.
Uh, he gave an excellent performance. That’s why.
Wow. Most of those categories?…zzzzz. No woner Kathy Griffin calls ‘em the Schmemmies.
Or “wonder”.
Micheal Giachinno was robbed! Lost should have won for best music.
Totally agree! 24 won, wtf? Lost has had the best musical score on TV for the past 6 years.
Did the voters actually listen to the music or was it a pity vote for 24?
I know, right Micheal is so awesome
THAT is inconceivable. They guy has an Oscar, Lost’s beautiful music actually enhanced the story, and 24 WON?!?!?
Giachinno is easily the best modern score composer and LOST undoubtedly has the most memorable, moving score of any television show ever, yet it didn’t win?!! Bullsh*t!!!!
I agree he was robbed, but I think has won before? Plus I’m sure his oscar he won in march will help him get over it.
So happy for Ann-Margaret. She is so underrated.
Yay for Jeff Probst!
I just can’t agree with that. The best host has to be Tom Bergeron, no one can work a camera or live audience like he can. I guess the voters just give out the awards to the most recognizable name… *yawn*
Two words: Cat Deeley
NPH deserved to win because it was the best comedic performance. O’Malley, though very very good, did a fantastic dramatic performance.
I say NPH should go home 3 for 3!
it was oustanding guest actor in a comedy series, not outstanding comedic performance in a comedy series.
True, but NPH lost last year, because his submitted episode for HIMYM was “too serious for comedy”, too, so go figure how the votes work.
Ok, so it says that Mia Michaels won for choreography. But for what piece?
Mia was nominated for her entire body of work for S5 of SYTYCD: “One” (a garbage routine), the Butt dance (so deserving!), and Addiction (probably the best piece of choreography to hit that stage).
Mike O’Malley was robbed. His performance on Glee was unforgettable.
Yeah, I wanted him to win, he was great, but the Academy did not dare to give it to somebody not well known.
Exactly, I have no idea who Mike O’Malley is.
