Deadline.com is reporting, and EW has confirmed, that Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams will join the cast of On the Road, the adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic Beat Generation novel. Mortensen will play Old Bull Lee, famously based on author William S. Burroughs, and Adams will play his wife Jane, based on Burrough’s common-law wife Joan Vollmer. The film also stars Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy, out in Dec.), Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, and Sam Riley; director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) began filming today.

I just saw Viggo in The Road on DVD. What a great movie and incredible acting! I am sure he’ll also be great in On the Road.
I just recently got to see Viggo in ‘The Road’ and ‘Appaloosa’ — I think he’ll be a wonderful addition to this. (I also especially look forward to seeing Riley, whom I loved as Ian Curtis in ‘Control.’)
He’s also good in Eastern Promises and A History of Violence. He is a highly under rated actor, probably because his performances are quiet and controlled.
This is going to be one of the best movies ever!
it’s too bad they’ve already made Revolutionary Road, because if they’d cast Viggo in it, it could have been his Road trilogy
Haha, I wondered if he said to his agent “it has to have Road in the title!”
Maybe he can next star in the film version of James Ellroy’s “Killer On the Road”?
I am curious so still some celebrities and rich people feel lonely.

If anyone knows William and Joan, this does not end well — see the opening of David Cronenberg’s “Naked Lunch”
Does Kerouac reference it in On the Road? I don’t remember. I know Ginsberg references Joan in Howl. I’m a little conflicted about how I’ve felt about the casting for this movie (based on the pictures, Howl seems to have it closer to right)…I really hope they do the book justice, because it’s just fantastic.
Most overrated book in the history of literature. I can’t wait to not see this movie.
And who can forget his amazing turn as Aragorn (sp?) in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy! I’ve seen everything Viggo has done since and he certainly is one of the most underated actors in the business today!
I don’t understand the obsession people have regarding drug addicts and murderers. Burroughs murdered his wife and got away with it. He was also a drug addict most of his life. How is that genius?? If we all took drugs, I am sure we could all produce “brilliant” work as well. I think it is time we stop glorifying these people. Shame on you, Viggo. You should have passed on this role.
