Steven Tyler drops backstage hint about 'American Idol' deal: Report

Tags: , , TV

Steven Tyler may very well be American Idol‘s newest judge…if you trust the backstage chatter of Steven Tyler, that is. People.com caught up with the Aerosmith frontman Saturday night as he entered an afterparty for the band’s Las Vegas concert and asked him about his future plans. “Recording an album and [I’m] probably going to be judge on American Idol,” he said. “I’m doing it. What do you think? I’m doing it.” Reps for Fox and American Idol have repeatedly declined to comment on speculation about the show’s season 10 judging panel. A source close to the show said on Friday evening that no final decision will be announced at the network’s Press Tour panel this morning in Los Angeles, and that no final deals had been inked as of that time.

YEAAAAHHHHH! he’s gonna be a really awesome judge :D

    • Bantha Poodoo

At least now maybe people will quit trying to sing “Dream On” and butchering that note if the guy who actually sang the song is sitting there watching them.

      • Marci

Good point. Too bad he wasn’t in place last year, it might have toned down Siobhan M’s tendancy to try to scream a note.

      • Brianna

Yes!!!! Steven is going to rock the show. He is an amazing and fun rock star. And he has a wonderful personality too. And Marci, leave Siobhan alone. She’s a great singer.

      • Jennifer C

Steve Tyler would have given Magnus cover had he been a judge in S9. Any other judge snarked on her wailing, Siobhan could have just pointed at Aerosmith’s howler, said “Hmmmphth!” and flounced off stage.

      • Shamrocky

No, Marci is right. Steven Tyler may be the only one who could make Siobhan understand how ridiculous she sounded. Too bad he wasn’t there.

    • Bebe

Hasn’t he been on a drug binge for the past year? Would it really be wise for Fox to hire such a … loose cannon?

      • Laura

He battled with an addiction to pain medicines. Then he ended up going to rehab. Now he is doing better in life. He doesn’t do those pills anymore.

  • DJ

    It’s a brave new Idol, that’s all I got to say …

    • anibundel

I think on paper he looks like a very good choice to play the “a$$hole judge” who tells it like it is because he’s “rock’n'roll, baby!”

  • JC

So they could put on Steven Tyler, and not Harry Connick Jr.

  • Katie

A judging panel of Randy, J Lo, and Steven Tyler? Which of them is supposed to be the sensible one?

They would have done better to cancel it.

    • Zakry

It’s still pulling in over 20 million viewers a week, its still making gazillions for FOX, and its FOX’s highest rated show. Cancel it? No way.

      • Juneau

I seriously doubt that will still be the case after Simon leaves. This is idols last season at the top of the ratings.

      • Tatar69x

Cowell started phoning it in in S7. It was all so boring and an ordeal for Simon..to have to stoop so low to collect his 45 million paycheck for auditions and 3 hours a week after Top 24.

People watched the show when Cowell was a nobody. Most still watch it not for some choice 8 second bon mot the writers give Cowell to deliver, but for the contestants. And once they went to 4 judges, the chemistry was lost and Cowell was lost, and was just another judge adding to the mess.
Remember that Season 8 had a bigger ratings drop and loss of people than S9.

    • anibundel

As the late great Troy McClure would say: “Not until the show becomes unprofitable.”

      • veldarol

Troy McClure? You might remember him from such reality competition shows like “America’s Next top Busboy”, and “So You think You can Plea-Bargain?”

  • Briana

    Um….yeah. That’s it.

    • Brianna

Oh no! Why does there always have to be another person with my name at blogs. Just great- 2 Briannas. This sucks!

  • sweetemotion

Steven Tyler as a judge. I would totally watch that. I think he has more to offer that one would initially assume.

  • Kacey

Like him or not, the man has been in the music business for nearly 40 years. He knows the ups and downs and he’s got more stage presence in his pinky finger than all of last seasons Top 10 combined. I think he’ll be a great addition to the panel.

  • Stormy

Very scary idea. Kids will get the news, google Tyler and conclude that a decades long addiction problem does no harm. A completely wrong answer for Idol. Tyler is all about sex, drugs and Rock N Roll. That is NOT Idol’s message.

    • Stephanie T.

Look, R&R is about what you have mentioned but Tyler has paid dearly for his sins. He could be an example of why drug abuse is bad.

      • Anon

Not if he’s seen as a role model since his problem is ongoing. Besides, his kind of music is not the least bit current. Who would buy into his opinions? The only song of theirs [Aerosmith] that ever hit #1 was not an Aerosmith song at all, but one written by Diane Warren for a movie. And they had to add a string section to pull that off. He’s wrong for Idol.

    • LadyBug979

      Duh…. Paula?

    • Tatar69x

Best the children! the children! then never learn about what the Beatles, Rolling Stones, or most movie stars did.
I’d keep ‘em watching Teletubbies and Disney, Stormy..Because booze and recreational drugs and shifting sex partners as frequently as some Palin supporters change underwear is part of the lifestyle of a majority of the movie and music talent.

      • Shamrocky

What are you talking about? Did you just do a bout with recreational drugs yourself? You make no sense.

      • Stormy

Acknowledging bad behavior is one thing, ignoring it and rewarding the perpetrator is entirely different. There are plenty of rockers out there who don’t carry the substance abuse baggage of Steven Tyler. Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Brian May, etc. We don’t need Tyler on Idol.

    • LadyBug979

      Have we forgotten PAULA!!!!!

      • Squee

        Workin’ on it.

  • DEBBIE

    J-Lo a judge – good choice
only 3 judges – another good choice
Steven Tyler as the 3rd judge – PLEASE say it isn’t so.

    • Ms. K

I totally agree. I am a huge Aerosmith fan, but there’s nothing he can say that would add value to the show.

  • brandy

Crap. I have such bad feelings about this.

I so would rather have Jessica Simpson and Harry Connic Jr, rather than JLo and Steven Tyler. I just feel like the chemistry between them would be so much more enjoyable.

    • mia

Jessica Simpson??? You must be either a relative of hers or a tone deaf idiot.

      • BlackIrish4094

Why, because J-Lo is such a great singer? I agree that SImpson and Connick would be better, that’s why they are called opinions you tone deaf idiot.

      • Marci

        I’m with you, BlackIrish.

      • mia

LOL. If any of you actually think Jessica Simpson can sing you need to get yourselves to an ear doctor – and fast!

      • agree

Brandy, go ask your parents what good music is. This is the problem with American Idol, too many teens text voting.

  • Anon

So they dump nympho Kara and think a suitable replacement is Toxic Tyler? They just lowered the contestant age to 15 and Tyler is going to influence them? Madness! Notice to Fremantle. Stop! Think! Walk away!

  • @popservations

Debbie, I concur. I think Jennifer Lopez is the Paula Abdul replacement we should have gotten a year ago (dance background, passable singer but big hits, know about image). Plus she’s probably more coherent than Paula. And I’m down with the three-judge format. But I while I get Steven Tyler’s experience in the music industry and as an artist, I can’t imagine the chemistry between those two, and his perspective seems far too rock for the show.

Also, still on the fence about how I feel about Nigel Lythgoe returning as producer. I feel this year he’s basically destroyed what I loved about ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ He’d better not nominate himself to the panel, a la Dick Cheney.

  • simon

Ugh, the whole thing is just too crazy. JLo hasn’t done anything in YEARS and Sony just dumped her. She is DESPERATE for something to do to stay relevant. Tyler – great musician but not a fit for Idol AT ALL. Harry Connick would have been much better choice. Jessica Simpson talentless too but better personality for show than JLo

    • kayla

ummm, you say Lopez is a bad choice because her career is in the dumps yet you also say you think Simpson is a good choice though her career has never left the toilet. Jessica Simpson “fans” are clearly lacking brain cells.

      • StellaLouise

I’m not a fan of either JLo or Jessica Simpson, but Jessica Simpson seems like shes at the very least nice and personable, I can’t say the same for Jennifer Lopez

    • Marci

I like JLo, I always have and I will be fine with her being a judge. But, I LOVED watching Shania Twain both judging and caoching last year. I would much rather see her on the panel.

  • James

Steven Tyler has been performing for years, he knows whats up. Plus i think having him could make it interesting which is what the show needs. Not some boring @$$ judges
