Brad Pitt attached to zombie pic 'World War Z'

Brad Pitt is attached to star in the big-screen adaptation of Max Brooks’ novel World War Z, according to MTV News. The zombie apocalypse film, slated for a summer 2012 release, will be directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) from a script by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) and Matthew Michael Carnahan (Lions for Lambs). Paramount has also optioned Brooks’ The Zombie Survival Guide and The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks.

Rapper Foxy Brown arrested

Rapper Foxy Brown (née Inga Marchand) was arrested yesterday in Brooklyn for allegedly violating an order of protection, reports the AP. According to website TMZ, Brown is accused of verbally engaging a neighbor who had a restraining order against the rapper. Brown’s past run-ins with the law include an eight-month jail sentence in 2007-2008 for hitting a neighbor with a cell phone and a 2007 arrest for attacking a beauty shop employee in Florida.

Buff Cobb, cohost of influential 1950s talk show 'Mike and Buff,' dies at 82

Buff Cobb, 82, an actress who was most well known for hosting the 1950s talk show Mike and Buff with then-husband Mike Wallace, died July 12 at a nursing home in Lebanon, N.H., according to The New York Times. Mike and Buff, in which the couple would debate a different topic every weekday, represented one of television’s first talk shows. Cobb, who was born as Patrizia Cobb Chapman in Florence, Italy, married Wallace in 1949. The couple divorced eight years later. Cobb is survived by her half brother, Thomas.

Dustin Lance Black hired to write 'Barefoot Bandit' movie about real-life teen outlaw

20th Century Fox is revving up a movie about 19-year-old outlaw Colton Harris-Moore, notoriously dubbed the “Barefoot Bandit,” and has hired Dustin Lance Black (Milk) to write the screenplay, according to Variety. David Gordon Green, who is the producing the film, is also in final talks to direct. The movie will be based on a book proposal, Taking Flight: The Hunt for a Young Outlaw, by Outside adventure magazine writer Bob Friel. Harris-Moore was arrested July 11 in the Bahamas after spending the past two years on the run and allegedly committing burglary at more than 100 private residences, in addition to stealing and learning to fly at least five small aircraft. He is now awaiting trial in the state of Washington.

Elton John postpones Arizona concert due to food poisoning

Food poisoning has caused Elton John to postpone his Wednesday night concert at the Tucson Arena in Arizona, the AP reports. Concert organizers say the British singer will now perform Thursday night instead.

Simon Monjack died from the same causes as his late wife, Brittany Murphy

According to People, the Los Angeles County Coroner has determined that Simon Monjack — the British screenwriter who died five months after his wife, Brittany Murphy — died of the same two causes as the late actress: acute pneumonia and severe anemia. The Coroner’s office also revealed that prescription drugs were found in Monjack’s body, but not at lethal levels. Monjack was found dead in May at the same Hollywood home where Murphy died last December.

Police investigating Mel Gibson's extortion allegations

People reports that police officials are investigating Mel Gibson’s claims that ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva attempted to extort the actor. The allegations are connected to the purported recordings of Gibson yelling at his ex-girlfriend; the actor claims Grigorieva demanded payment, or else she would leak the tapes. “Extortion allegations were brought to our attention [and] we’re looking into it,” Steve Whitmore, the L.A. Sheriff’s spokesman, told People.

Labor department defends 'Kate Plus 8' permits

After a Pennsylvania representative raised questions about the work permits issued to Kate Gosselin’s sextuplets — for the series Kate Plus 8 — the state’s labor department is defending its decision, the Associated Press reports. Though Rep. Thomas Murt insists the permits are illegal, authorities claim the children are not being unlawfully exploited during the filming process.

Seth MacFarlane to roast David Hasselhoff

Seth MacFarlane will be master of ceremonies for Comedy Central’s roast of David Hasselhoff. As roast master, The Family Guy creator will direct a dais of quasi-luminaries that includes Pamela Anderson, Hulk Hogan, and Jerry Springer. The roast will take place Aug. 1 in Los Angeles and air on Comedy Central two weeks later.
