John Stamos takes the stand at trial of alleged extortioners
Actor John Stamos testified today at the trial of Allison Coss and Scott Sippola, the pair who allegedly attempted to extort $680,000 from the Full House star in exchange for potentially compromising photographs, the AP reports. The attorney for the defense claimed during opening arguments that Coss was only 17 when she met Stamos, and maintained that he had brought her back to his hotel room along with two strippers and a bag of cocaine. On the stand, the actor admitted to meeting Coss in 2004, but said it never got beyond “just hanging out” and “socializing,” and Stamos’ camp categorically denied the more salacious accusations in a statement that read, “The allegations made yesterday in the courtroom by the defendants’ attorney during opening statements will not be proven because they are simply untrue.”
FCC live expletive policy scrapped by New York City court
An FCC policy that allowed television broadcasters to be fined for airing even a single expletive live was tossed out today by a federal court, the AP reports. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled that the 2004 policy “effectively chills speech, because broadcasters have no way of knowing what the FCC will find offensive.” The policy originated after Bono of U2 said “f—ing brilliant” on NBC during the live broadcast of the Golden Globes in 2003.

Third Mel Gibson tape surfaces online
A third tape in which Mel Gibson purportedly threatens his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, has emerged, just a day after a second tape surfaced on RadarOnline.com. During Gibson’s alleged rant, the 54-year-old actor accuses Grigorieva of using him for his money and says he owns her, in addition to berating the former couple’s nanny and referring to her with a racial epithet. Grigorieva, in response, states that Gibson controls her “like a marionette” and that she “walks on eggshells” around him. The L.A. Sheriff’s department is currently investigating allegations of domestic abuse against Gibson.
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dies at 80
George Steinbrenner, the often larger-than-life owner of the New York Yankees, died from a heart attack this morning. After purchasing the then-moribund team in 1973, Steinbrenner helped lead the Yankees to 11 American League pennants and seven championships, and regain prominence as one of the reigning franchises in Major League Baseball. Boisterous and with a sometimes controversial hands-on approach, Steinbrenner was a famous figure in the sport; so much so that the sitcom Seinfeld often featured a fictional version of the executive in its episodes; his voice was provided by series co-creator Larry David.
“The Boss” was 80, and his death comes eight months after the Yankees won their latest World Series.

Disney’s The Lion King also did very well; its $1,634,367 marked the long-running production’s strongest non-holiday take ever. Overall, Broadway saw a $450,000 increase from the week before.
