Melissa Gilbert to undergo surgery

Categories: Stage

Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert, who spent the past few months on the road touring with a stage version of the TV hit, will undergo surgery July 22 for a “broken back,” the actress told People. During the procedure, doctors will “replace a disc with a plastic implant and fuse a vertebra in her lower spine.” Gilbert will fully recover six months after the surgery. It’s not clear how Gilbert suffered the injury, but she told People she had felt pain during the tour, which finished in early July. “I would balk and fight it and say, ‘I’ve got to do the show,’” she said. “I thought doing a musical at 46 playing a woman in her late 20s, early 30s was amazing enough. But doing with a broken back buys me a little more street cred.”

Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston engaged

Categories: Celebrity Babies!

Onetime vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol Palin, 19, and Levi Johnston, 20, are engaged to be married, it was revealed on the cover of Us Weekly. The couple, who are parents to an 18-month-old son, Tripp, gave the magazine an interview, saying that they didn’t run the plan by their parents. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” Palin said. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.” The couple—who called off their original engagement two weeks after their son was born in December 2008—reconnected three months ago while working out custody of the child. “I really thought we were over,” Johnston was quoted as saying. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking—and then we took Tripp for a walk.” While NBC’s Today Tweeted the news and is running it on their website, a rep for Palin has not returned a call seeking confirmation or comment, and no further details about specific wedding plans, or a date, are yet available.

UPDATE: Sarah and Todd Palin released a statement to CNN regarding Bristol and Johnston’s engagement: “Bristol, at 19, is now a young adult. As parents we obviously want what is best for our children, but Bristol is ultimately in charge of determining what is best for her and her beautiful son. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives. We pray that, as a couple, Bristol and Levi’s relationship matures into one that will allow Tripp to grow up graced with two loving parents in his life.”
