Twentieth Century Fox and director Ridley Scott have tapped Star Trek producer and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof to pen a script that could form the basis for an Alien prequel movie or for something else altogether, EW has confirmed. The news was first reported by Mike Fleming of Deadline Hollywood. According to a source familiar with the deal, Lindelof was approached to rewrite an existing Alien prequel script by Jon Spaihts. The Lost producer pitched a take on the Alien project that actually differed from Scott’s plans, but the director and studio liked it enough to commission him to write a script. Should Scott decide not to use Lindelof’s work for the Alien flick, Fox may make the movie, anyway, as an original sci-fi property separate from the Alien franchise. ONLY if Ridley is involved. Lindelof gives me hope, but Ridley really needs to be involved for this to matter. Otherwise, they either should try to make another Aliens vs Predators and do it the right way, not the lame way, or just let the Aliens franchise rest for now.
Uh, I think James did quite a fine job with the legacy as much as Ridley.
There’s no way it could be worse than Joss Whedon’s ghastly sequel script, so, who knows, maybe it will work.
It is is more than capable hands with Lindelof, but don’t hate on Joss b/c the director was terrible gretel. “It wasn’t a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines…mostly…but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There’s actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then they’d changed the script…but it wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script; it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable.” – Joss Whedon
I hope it’s something different all together. It’s time for hollywood to stop recycling things. Doing something unique gives us gems like LOST.
Of course head cheerleader Jensen would be the one reporting this. Expect a great first hour of a movie only to be let down by a mind-boggling awful ending 30 minutes or so.
Love you, too, friend. Tell Fishbiscuit I said hello.
@Ron: “-ly.” You mean “mind-bogglingLY.” “Expect a great first hour followed by a mind-bogglingly awesome ending.”
@Jeff, a clarification please, is Fishbiscuit that beached whale over at Doc Artz’s blog?
Love seeing the article writers feeding the trolls.
I like you Doc Jensen!
no kidding. i am boycotting all things lindelof.
Boo! Old material! I already read this comment over on NYMag’s Vulture blog. You also said something about a birth scene accompanied by sappy music. Were you counting down the minutes until EW covered this story so you could post again? Does bashing Lindelof really get you going? Way to troll, troll.
I’m sick of you whiny few bashing Doc Jensen for “daring” to like a show and then doing HIS JOB, which is to write about current and popular entertainment! EW wouldn’t have let him write a single column if there hadn’t been a demand. If you don’t know this, I’m assuming you don’t work or understand free enterprise.
Get over it, dude. Lost’s ending was fine, and the whining is old. Love you, Jeff! Looking forward to the next few Lost columns!
Just don’t turn Alien into some silly pseudo-religious circle-jerk like you did with LOST.
Actually, the franchise has already done “psuedo-religious circle-jerk.” It’s called “The End of Alien 3.”
Good call… I try to only remember the good parts of Alien3 (there aren’t many, but there are a few redeeming moments). And thanks for responding to me Doc!!
BOOM!
And just to be clear, I was “speaking” to Lindelof. Though the Doc Jensen LOST recaps might have also been one big circle-jerk, I was a proud follower and contributor… I still think the best part of LOST was the community of fans that rabidly debated and dissected each and every savory morsel the show tossed us. Just wish it didn’t end on such a false and cheesy note (Lindelof: watch Inception to see how to properly end a convoluted story).
What’s with all the circle jerk bashing? I’m pretty sure all the participants have a great time. Oh wait, is that what you meant? That the ending of ‘Lost’ was an awesome time capped by shared orgasm? “It’s over,” they all tell one another. “You can let go now.” <3 LOST <3
Dang I miss Lost.
i expect at least one overly sentimental birth scene to some treacly music.
HA! Also, halfpint hates those Billy Goats Gruff.
This is freaking awesome. Normally, I’m not interested in franchise projects, but Lindelof is a brilliant writer. A simple pitch is enough to get Ridley Scott’s ears to perk up, and 20th Century Fox to practically commit!
Lindelof is a very creative writer and I trust that he will do a great job. Are they still planning on doing a part I and part II for the Alien prequel? I wonder if it will be based on the Space Jockey/Pilot species and/or the Alien origin and all that good stuff I love-can’t wait to find out more details on this.
For one, I will NEVER watch another thing by Lindelof after the LOST fiasco of season 6. Ya done ruint it there boy.
Could be good. I’m in if it doesn’t involve Predators.
