Steve Carell recently spoke about wanting to leave The Office to better balance his work-family schedule and, yesterday, NBC confirmed that the actor will be leaving his post as awkward and annoying boss Michael Scott when his contract expires after the seventh season. No word yet on who, if anyone, will replace Carell, who has also built a successful movie career including films like the recent hit Despicable Me, but NBC plans to keep the series in its Thursday 9 p.m. time slot. Carell’s exit comes on the heels of Alec Baldwin’s recent statements about potentially leaving NBC’s other Thursday night series, 30 Rock.

Say it ain’t so. But I guess all good things must come to an end. But I can’t take both Baldwin and Carell leaving the same year.
NBC should just end “The Office” when Carell leaves the show. It had a good run, but it is time to pull the plug.
I’m torn between agreeing with you and saying enough is enough don’t drag it out without the main character. Especially since the David Brent/Michael Scott character is the main focus aruond which the show was built to revolve. But another part of me is very curious about what direction they could go in or what sort of new possibilities there are in his absence.
What if Holly replaced him? He could still visit once a year or so.
“I’m torn between agreeing with you and saying enough is enough don’t drag it out without the main character.”
But that is the same thing.
The idea that they’re keeping the show going without him is ridiculous. You might as well have had Frasier without Kelsey Grammer.
The Office hasn’t been good since season 3.
As much as it kills me, I have to agree with you… With the exception of the Niagara episode.
Cheers survived the loss of Coach and Diane for many many years. and The American Office survives without Ricky Gervais behind the manager’s desk of Dunder Miflin.
Cheers wouldn’t have survived without Sam, though. The second part of your comment doesn’t really make sense.
Agree with you, Sam Malone was “Cheers”.
Cheers was also much more of an ensemble cast. I love The Office’s ensemble, but most of them never have that many lines at a time. Imagine them trying to carry the show without Carell. An episode of Creed as the boss would be funny as a onetime gag, but it could never sustain itself.
My heart wants the show to go on forever, but even I know the show has to end when Steve leaves.
I completely agree with you. I would love this show to go on forever, but at some point, the show has got to end and if it’s going to end, it might as well end on a high note. I really don’t see how this show will survive without Steve Carell. I think that Michael Scott is the glue that holds all of the other characters together on the show.
NOOOOOOOO!!! Alec, please, take it to 6th season.
