'American Idol': 26,000 show up at first two season 10 audition cities

Tagged: ,

Apparently, plenty of wannabe pop stars have their eye on Lee DeWyze’s crown and sash. According to a Fox spokesperson, 26,000 people turned out for the first two stops on American Idol‘s season 10 audition tour.

“The numbers of people turning up to the American Idol auditions in Nashville and Milwaukee have been incredible,” said show creator Simon Fuller, in a release. “These attendance figures are significantly up on the last few years, and there is clearly renewed excitement and interest in the show, which is great to see.”

Idol‘s season 10 search kicked off in Nashville on July 17, and drew 16,000 singers; on July 21, an additional 10,000 showed up to a cattle-call in Milwaukee, Wis.The search continues Monday, July 26, in New Orleans.

Callbacks, in which selected contestants appear in front of the show’s panel of judges, aren’t expected to begin until September, according to sources close to the show.

I won’t lie; I went. I had a blast and enjoyed the experience, but I’m not sure if I have more or less respect for the winners. It truly is a matter of luck (what mood the judges are in, how many they’ve already put through, what time of day you get to sing, etc.). I saw some incredible singers get the axe, and my judges could not have looked more bored or checked-out (for the 17 seconds I got to sing). Like I said, though, I enjoyed it. Maybe because I had zero expectations…

This season better be good , more talent to choose from

Eh, several of my friends auditioned, but none of them made it, sadly. They said that the only people they were putting through were either EXTREMELY EXTREMELY talented, or total bozos. Like one guy wearing a spiderman costume who sang the spiderman theme song.

This brings a new understanding to the show’s auditions. If I got this correct, you first go and try out in front of the pre-screening judges (this I knew), BUT, if you are selected, you than have to wait another six plus weeks and go back to appear in front of the actual show’s judges. I always thought it was later in the day or the next that they would see them. This means the “bozos” as Page referred to them have to know they have been picked because they are bad enough to be the joke part of the show which gives them all that time to perfect their imperfect skills even more. hmmmmm

PS: This makes me really feel for the people who don’t get picked to continue knowing they had all those weeks of expectation that they “made it through to see the judges”. It’s more understandable now why so many of them appear so very upset. I always had thought their egos were bigger than their voices but that extra 6+ weeks of waiting makes more sense.

But its never noted that a lot of those people who show up don’t actually audition – they are there to support the auditioners (family, friends, cheerleading team, etc.)

I’m guessing about 10k of them were white boys with guitars anticipating cruising through to “stardom”. The renewed interest is probably due to the realization that you no longer need to be a great performer to win it all.

This is interesting. I have never seen comments from people who have tried out before. Maybe Lee winning made it seem easy – he’s not that good. Interesting to note that only the super-talented are getting cards, I always feel like lots of mediocre people get through when I watch the first few shows. Proves singing well is harder than we think.

I have been so belwdeired in the past but now it all makes sense!

Round 2 isn’t in front of the TV judges. Its in front of the executive producers. Once you make it past them that’s when you sing for the TV judges. Milwaukee has already had round 2, Nashville has not.

My daughter will be auditioning in New Jersey. Could someone tell me the procedure for registration. Doors open at 7am what time should arrive and are we allowed to line up in front of the venues? If not, where does everyone wait for the doors to open? Please let me know.
