Dustin Lance Black hired to write 'Barefoot Bandit' movie about real-life teen outlaw

20th Century Fox is revving up a movie about 19-year-old outlaw Colton Harris-Moore, notoriously dubbed the “Barefoot Bandit,” and has hired Dustin Lance Black (Milk) to write the screenplay, according to Variety. David Gordon Green, who is the producing the film, is also in final talks to direct. The movie will be based on a book proposal, Taking Flight: The Hunt for a Young Outlaw, by Outside adventure magazine writer Bob Friel. Harris-Moore was arrested July 11 in the Bahamas after spending the past two years on the run and allegedly committing burglary at more than 100 private residences, in addition to stealing and learning to fly at least five small aircraft. He is now awaiting trial in the state of Washington.

Just what we need… another film glorifying criminal activity. It is so sad how many people look up to Colton and think he’s some kind of a hero.

Holy sh*t, that didn’t take any time, did it? The funny part is that the day he got caught, literally, my husband wondered aloud how long it would take them to make a movie about him. Oh, and btw, I would cast Anton Yelchin for this one. If I thought he could stretch his muscles enough, I would say Michael Cera, but I have nothing to go on that says he can do something like that.

      Zac Efron or Shia

I like your Zac Efron suggestion. So many people get caught up in bashing him, and don’t realized that he’s actually a pretty talented guy. I thoroughly enjoyed him in 17 Again. I think Shia would have been perfect a few years ago, but he’s maybe too manly at this point.

Damn. I just realized Yelchin, LaBeouf, Cera, AND Efron are all 5’10″ or below. Colton Harris Moore is like 6’3″. Back to the drawing board.

His height isn’t really what people will remember about him. Besides, forced perspective can remedy a lot–Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid and Meryl Streep as Julia Child.

I feel guilty condoning criminal and destructive behavior. However, I did thoroughly enjoy Catch Me If You Can, and I like what I’ve seen of DLB’s work. Potential for something decent? Maybe.

  • Sickened

Coming from the state and area where Colton came from… I’m SICKENED at his gloryfication. He’s a criminal who hurt people. Way to go America. Wither hang them or glorify. Hurrah.

Typical American mentality. Let’s celebrate bad behaviour and stupidity, and glorify it on film… no wonder your country is going down the drain so fast!

I wonder if Dustin Lance Black isn’t too busy being a hypocrite to write the script.

Im sorry why is Dustin supposed to be a hypocrite???
