Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston engaged

Filed under: Celebrity Babies!, News and tagged:

Onetime vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol Palin, 19, and Levi Johnston, 20, are engaged to be married, it was revealed on the cover of Us Weekly. The couple, who are parents to an 18-month-old son, Tripp, gave the magazine an interview, saying that they didn’t run the plan by their parents. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” Palin said. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.” The couple—who called off their original engagement two weeks after their son was born in December 2008—reconnected three months ago while working out custody of the child. “I really thought we were over,” Johnston was quoted as saying. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking—and then we took Tripp for a walk.” While NBC’s Today Tweeted the news and is running it on their website, a rep for Palin has not returned a call seeking confirmation or comment, and no further details about specific wedding plans, or a date, are yet available.

UPDATE: Sarah and Todd Palin released a statement to CNN regarding Bristol and Johnston’s engagement: “Bristol, at 19, is now a young adult. As parents we obviously want what is best for our children, but Bristol is ultimately in charge of determining what is best for her and her beautiful son. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives. We pray that, as a couple, Bristol and Levi’s relationship matures into one that will allow Tripp to grow up graced with two loving parents in his life.”

Who’s gonna be more pissed…Kathy Griffin or Sarah Palin?

    • stasha

Kathy Griffin will definitely be heartbroken over this news.

    • D List

      I think Kathy.

    • Jolie

Levi has proven himself to be the douche he really is. Gettin’ on that gravy train. He’s a dumbass loser.

      • Ian

“Levi has proven himself to be the douche he really is. Gettin’ on that gravy train. He’s a dumbass loser.” — …and he’s marrying into the perfect clan. I wouldn’t be surprised if down the line these 2 brain-dead clowns find out that they’re actually cousins…and won’t think anything of it.

    • DM

Hey EW – What exactly does this have to do with movies, music, books??

      • Gretchen

Sarah Palin released a book and is “developing” a tv show and/or has one (don’t like her, so I’m sure exactly which it is); Bristol has “acted” on Secret Life of the American Teenager; and Levi has been in pop culture since the get-go. Speaking of pop culture, that’s what this site/mag is about, ALL of pop culture

  • Linda K

returning to the scene of the crime. . . Levi probably wants to get the piece of the Palin $$. Sure Sara will be glad to have another leech on her payroll.

    • Brian

Gleesh, Cynical Cindy. Also, is love dead and all hope gone?

    • OMGq

No, love is not dead, but this just screams “media stunt”. Sorry, but Palin is the master manipulator of press – even if she is quick to point out all of it’s faults.

  • TheObserver

    Bill Maher called it

  • amie

    bleck.

    • Brian

      Blerg.

      • emmy

        Blerg, indeed.

  • mark in nyc

I think Palin is the worst thing for this country….but you can’t ontrol your kids.
Bening in a two parent home is proven to be better for a child, so let’s hope it works out and realize this has little bearing on Sara PAlin.

    • Jamie

The funny thing about things that are “proven” is that people forget that they’re proved statistically, in the aggregate. That means that, in general, a two-parent family is better, but that it’s not a blanket endorsement of every pairing because the specific problems of a bad pairing overwhelm the generic advantages of a generic pairing.

      • Rebecca

        Well said.

      • Gretchen

Your “proved” should be “proven”. I believe statistics will support this.

      • Jamie

        Bite me Gretchen

    • sunny

ummmm Bristol was raised in a two-parent home…

      • Sarah

        mark was referring to Tripp.

      • she knows

Sarah, Sunny knows that he was referring to Tripp but it’s relevant to note that Tripp’s mom was raised in said preferred two family home and ended up becoming a statistic.

      • sunny

yeah, i just meant that two parents doesn’t necessarily equal good and one parent doesn’t necessarily equal bad since Bristol, raised in a 2 parent home still went through teenage pregnancy and is now set to marry this (imo) douche :)

      • sunny

        oh, thanks “she knows” :)

    • Bill

Obviously you are one of those vitrol spewing left wingers.

You act like you are an expert on these things. I doubt you are dry behind the ears and don’t know anything about Sarah Palin except what you read in the NYT. A complte left wing rag.

      • Louise

Following your logic, that would make Fox News a complete right wing, redneck pandering rag.

      • nette

        Completely agree

      • bill schmill

Bill ur a b00b. Palin is a fool but the poster said this has no bearing on Sarah because you can’t control everything your kids do. Try reading thoroughly before you respond with your people’s typical right-wing whining and bashing!

      • nette

        Give me a break Louise

      • Kristen

Bill, that seems more than a little harsh. I think Mark was really commenting on the fact that this concerns the well-being of a child. It doesn’t matter what your political leaning is. And, as Americans, we have the right to have our own opinions on political leaders. I’m sure you use that right time and again, as I strongly suspect you to be a critic of President Obama. Chill out.

  • crs1

somewhere in Alaska, a divorce lawyer smiles.

    • Constance

Makes wonderful news after the year of bad blood and worse comments between the camps. Hope Tripp makes it out without too much therapy. Can you spell D-I-V-O-R-C-E and P-R-E-N-U-P?

    • Steve

My sentiment’s exactly. And not only is he smiling, but he is probably counting $ that will be in the bank soon.

  • Stacie

    Girl, don’t do it!

    • What are you doing?

Where’s her Sassy Gay Friend when she needs him?

      • Karate Pants

        YES!!!

      • Mark

What, What, WHAT are you doing?! Look at your life! Look at your choices!

      • Brian

        She’s a styoopid beeyutch.

    • Katie

      Boy, don’t do it!

  • John

Only trailer trash get married at 19 and 20. The whole Palin clan are a disgrace.

    • Oh Mel….

But you know that Sarah will put a happy-clappy family values spin on everything. Trot out the photo ops and find a way to blame the Democrats for *something* in all of this.

    • Marie

My husband and I got married at 18. We are not trailer trash and had never slept together before we were married. We have now been married over 10 years!

      • Jamie

I know things are different these days, but back when premarital sex was something that came up mostly in college, it wouldn’t have been a “wow” that a newlywed 18 year old couple hadn’t slept together before getting married.

      • Joe

        LOSER!

      • Karate Pants

Marie (and others who married as teenagers), while I hope your marriage is a long and happy one (I guess, not that I really know you), you MUST know that the deck is stacked against those who marry so young. Statistically. It’s not personal.
In most cases, one of the people in the marriage wakes up one day (could be after one year, could be after 20 years), and thinks “Oh, NO! I totally missed free-wheeling, fun, young adulthood!!!” Then they leave the marriage and try to ‘be 21 again’.
I shudder to think of the path my life would have taken if I’d followed through on things I was sure about when I was 18…but good luck to you.

      • D’s Advocate

@KaratePants The way I see it, the deck is stacked against *anyone* who gets married, regardless of age.

      • Karate Pants

D’s Advocate, so cynical! (but funny)

    • B

@ John. Whatever you may think about the Palin family is fine. That’s opinion. But calling young couples trailer trash is just ignorant.

    • Rose

I got married at 20 as well. I completed my education at UMD as well as my husband and we are not, nor have we ever been, trailer trash. We have three beautiful children and are a law-abiding, God-fearing family.
Please think before you post something nonsensical.

    • Elleann

Sarah Palin is a wonderful example of what a woman can do by combining family and career and standing for a free America with limited governmental control. Her child has had the advantage of growing up in a home where morals and education were upheld and practiced. Her choices were her own and produced a beautiful baby boy. I only hope her decision to marry Levi is for the right reasons…time will tell, and if they do get married, I wish them the best! He has been a poor example of integrity and honesty, but people can and do change, especially when they’re young!

      • mia

wow, what planet do you live on?? First of all, what morals are you referring to? Stealing from and lying to the voters? Being a blood thirsty killer of animals? Oh and then there’s the premarital sex thing. You really have no idea who these people are, do you??

    • CarolY

I’m sorry your comment is completely inappropriate. My husband and I got married at 18 & 19, not because we had to but because we wanted to. We just celebrated our 16 yr anniversary. We are not trailer trash. Please keep your generalized stereotypical ignorant comments to yourself.

      • It’s a fact

Yes, you are trailer trash. . . being married for 16 years does not make you any less trailer trashy

    • jlc

My parents were married @ 18 and they’ve been together for 31 yrs. now. 3 children, beautiful house on a farm, and their own business. They are definately not the definition of trailer trash. Concerning this article the engagement may not be the best thing for them at this time, but who are we (the general public) to know this? As long as the main concern remains w/ the child we should not pass judgement on those we only know through the media.

    • nette

what a stupid comment that is.

    • Ouch

Wow, that’s pretty harsh. I agree getting married young is not for everyone and in fact most people should NOT marry at that age because most of us are just too immature but to call someone trailer because they got married young is harsh.

    • Peggy

John, My mother was only 19 when she was married in 1947. She wasn’t and isn’t trailer trash. Don’t be so ignorant.

    • Elizabeth

My in-laws got married when she was 17 and he 19. They’re celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary on Sunday. So…not quite.

    • Keljo

My cousin and her husband are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary today. They were 19 & 20 when they got married, and they are about as far from “trailer trash” as you can get! They have 3 great kids, a beautiful home and are very hardworking. Blanket generalizations piss me off!!

  • Nia

You can take the girl out of the ghetto but you can’t take the ghetto out of the girl. That’s for her and her mom. I bet she is pregnant again. All of the horrible things he said about her and her family. Her going around the country preach abstinence…smh!

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig. Yet, SP is the voice of the Repub Party and will run for president. lol

    • none of your business

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still Michelle!

      • nette

haha … that was funny “none of your business”

      • Lame

Yeah, Michelle’s kids are whorin’ around town and selling their lame story! I think the lipstick on a pig comment is sad against either side, way to bring women back down. Why do we trash each other so much! Women have to work 10x as hard as men to prove ourselves to everyone and we’re still bashed by our fellow sisters. LAME. Of course you have to drag Michelle into this when it has NOTHING to do with her. Another attempt at a woman trying to bring down another woman.

      • Nia

The First Lady would never let her daughter’s boyfriend spend the night and the two of them sleep in the same bed. Of course she is raising her daughter’s to have morals and self esteem. They will put their education before pre-marital sex and dumb jocks.

      • jodipo

wow none of your business, just shows your either a woman hater, or a racist. WTF does any of this have to do with Michelle? You MUST be a republican… cause nobody with a brain would make such a pointless and stupid comment.

    • It’s a fact

This is a way that Bristol can have S-E-X. . . since she is so high and mighty about abstaining. Now she can be the woman we all thought she could be. Barefoot and pregnant and pregnant, and pregnant. . . here comes the TLC reality show. “I did abstaine realy I did. . .but I didn’t know I was pregnant . . at least that what I told my mom and the Republican party”

  • Aaron

Oh, crap, this can only mean Sarah has decided to run for something in the fall…

  • dctoronto

    Why is this entertainment news?

    • Katie

Because politics is gossip, bed hopping, slogan making, narrative driven nonsense. It’ not like SP is a real politician. She’s a creation, like Paris Hilton, who avoids the media! And how often have the Palin kids been on all the talk shows ‘entertaining us’ with their stories of the inner workings of their lives. It’s not Lady Gaga, but it’s pretty dang entertaining!

  • Sarah

The Today Show did read a statement from Sarah and Todd. They said something about admiring Bristol’s willingness to forgive. No mention of being happy for the couple. Oh well. I think if Bristol and Levi are serious about making this work, they need to move far, far away from Alaska.

  • BG 17

Why is this news on EW.com? Do one of them have a movie, album or book coming out? If I want to read about silver spoon rednecks, I’ll hop on over to TMZ.

    • orville

Because, unfortunately, Palin’s put herself out there as a pop culture figure.

      • mia

and sadly there are a pathetic – and frightening – amount of people swallowing every disqusting and hateful thing she says and does.

  • LadyJNewYork

Cha-Ching $$$$$$$$$$$ for Levi… nothing wrong with Bristol marrying her babydaddy, LOL…

  • July

For someone that hates the way the media portrays them, Bristol sure likes running to them with all of ther news.

She is aware that this could’ve been kept quiet. I really don’t want to hear any of the Palins complain about the media attacking them when it seems like they invite them in whenever they get the chance.

    • Constance

July – totally true – I think the phrase of the day for Palin will be “Fame Wh$re”

      • Jamie

Does the application of that phrase vary from day to day..?

    • Jolie

I hate Palin and her family. Even the new douche that was just added.

      • Mema5

Hey Jolie, hate is a very stong world. i’m glad you “hate” the palin family. it’s people like you who have brought this country down. You don’t have to agree with what she says and does but at least she is trying to make a difference. what have you done to make this country better?! as far as her daughter’s upcoming marriage, it’s none of our buisness. we should just wish them well. get over yourself jolie , you should try to be a better person.
