This is so sad. This guy was one of the finest performers- his dancing, his amzaing body of Great American Songwriting, he’s modelling… Truly we will not know his like again for many a moon to come.
If Cleveland had offered Pekar a substantial enough contract, I bet he would’ve stayed…alive.

I’m disgusted by many of the people who have replied to this. I hope the same is done in your obits, if you’re even noteworthy enough to get one. Shame on all of you.
Harvey Pekar was a truly unique human and American, dubbed “the Mark Twain of comic books.” He will be sorely missed by those of us in the comics community for his talent, brand of humor and his spirit. RIP, Harvey Pekar.
You have to understand that these are the sort of folks that Harvey would have had a field day with in his comic stories. I’m sure he’s looking down right now and getting a laugh out of their comments. It would validate his feelings about people and life, I am sure.
RIP Harvey. I have been reading you since the early 1980s. Your stories were so true to life, the kind of life the rest of us lead, not the kind of lives that are usually covered on this website.
RIP, a true visionary.Haters, there’s a Paris Hilton article around here somewhere for you to go be ‘outrageous’ on, her fans will probably be more shocked by your base, trite ramblings
My heart is so sad to hear of Harvey’s passing, I cherish reading American Splendor and wish his family the best. I LOVE YOU HARVEY!!
I knew Harvey, he would come to the post office to pick up his p.o. box mail. He was always willing to talk. I had many encounters with him and can say that he was a little rough around the edges but had a heart of gold. He was an everyman to the passer-by on the street, but to those of us who knew him and his work…He was Cleveland’s own, a blue collar giant in a much maligned town. RIP Harvey we love and miss you.
