Netflix-Relativity Media cut deal to stream new releases

Filed under: Movies, News, TV and tagged: , , ,

Netflix and indie film producer Relativity Media today announced a deal that will see Relativity movies stream directly and exclusively to Netflix during the traditional ”pay TV window.” The first movies announced as covered in the deal are The Fighter, starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams, distributed by Paramount Pictures; Skyline, co-directed by the Brothers Strause, released by Rogue Pictures and Universal Studios; Rogue Pictures’Nicolas Cage action/thriller Season of the Witch; and Movie 43, written and directed by Peter Farley. All will release later this year and stream through Netflix shortly thereafter.

“Historically, the rights to distribute these films are pre-sold to pay TV for as long as nine years after their theatrical release,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. ”Through our partnership with Relativity, these films will start to become available to our members just months after their DVD release.”

I have had Netflix streaming now for about a month. I love it. You don’t have to send anything back. You do have to have the right equipment and broadband, but it is totally worth it. The quality is excellent. They do need to improve on what is available . More new releases are needed, but that will probably come with time. I think it is awesome.

      seconded. I love my neflix

i third, netflix is awsome. definitly need to improve thier selection in terms of new realeases though, right now they just seem to have older movies and wierd b movies i never heard of,although they do have a great selection of tv shows and miniseries. I definitly agree with you bgl that the selections will improve over time, i have had streaming netflix since i got a Roku box in college about a year and a half ago and the additions made since then has been ten fold

Netflix streaming is great, is easy, and makes tv/movie watching quick and fun.

Love the netflix streaming. I recall when they first launched it was only on the computer, which wasn’t a big deal. Then I tried them through the Xbox hack, which was an improvement.
It’s been over a year and subscribed again, through the official Xbox version and enjoy the selection and quality, a lot of the videos mainly TV, are in HD, the rest are at least DVD quality.

I pity the fool who don’t have netflix!

I love Netflix streaming. I especially like it for tv shows. I’m currently watching Veronica Mars and it’s nice to just click on the next episode & watch without waiting for the next disc in the mail. I hope they also add more new releases of tv shows for instant watching.

Thank you for saying this! I had just looked the other week to see if Veronica Mars was up. :) I’m hoping that Netflix can work out a deal like Hulu to get a few episodes of new shows (even w/ commercials) so Netflix users can stream them to their TV too.

I am soooo envious of you!!! But thank you for letting me know about VM as it is one of the other show that I re-watch on a daily basis (the other one is Arrested Development). If you are enjoying VM than you should try out Party Down. Its awesome!

    Finally,

It was getting stupid after a while. Now if we could only get redbox to go along…

  • Eric

Netflix Streaming is so good. I loved using to watch Party Down the day it premiered, even though I don’t have Starz.

  • steve

lol, i did the same exact thing with party down. I still cant believe they cancelled that show. total BS

I’ve only used the streaming Netflix once to watch an episode of “Kate and Allie” than one of my best friends had a walk-on (literally) in. It kept re-buffering any time I tried to rewatch part of it, but otherwise the quality was acceptable and since “Kate and Allie” isn’t commercially available in the US aside from Season 1, it did give me a chance to stop bugging him about peeking at the Season 3 DVD set I got him from Canada a few years back.

I streaming Jack & Bobby right now. It’s such a brilliant show, and am very pleased that netflix has it. Now if they could get to adding Everwood! Also very happy they have all seven seasons of Buffy!

  • Marc

not on is netflix amazing but anytime i ever have any streaming issue whether it be on my computer or bluray they always email me the next day asking if there was a problem so they can fix it.. i think that is awesome..

netflix should use this entire page as a commercial

  • Millie

Netflix is fantabulous! I used to have the buffering issues but I have evil media center on my PC and I don’t have that problem anymore. Don’t have it with the PS3 either.

  • George

Netflix streaming is excellent on the Wii, much better than on TiVo. I agree, however, more recent movie titles are needed

  • paul

I love streaming my Netflix through the Wii. The quality of the picture is not to bad because I use it through a router but hey I can watch some old tv shows that I have always wanted to see and it is great for my 3 yr. old to watch his cartoons on

  • Nic

    I love my Netflix!!!!!!!

  • zillathrilla

YAY!!!!! This will make up for all the cracked Blu-ray discs that have come in the mail. Sending back and calling customer service everytime was annoying, but they always made up for it by sending a free additional movie on my DVD list. Mind you, Netflix has probably the best customer service I have seen, in a long time, and they go out of their way to make the customer is happy and doesn’t feel cheated. THANK YOU, NETFLIX AND RELATIVITY!!!!!!! TOUCHE

  • Chillaxin

Netflix deserves their success. The customer service is top notch the mailings are always on time and the streaming has improved 100 fold since this time last year. I must admit, having to wait the extra month to get new releases by mail has taken a bit of the glow off. But, I understand they had to do this to get the big studios to release more current titles for streaming library, and a strong library for streaming is imperative for their International and future success. So I won’t complain. They haven’t forgotten the customer yet. Keep it up.
