Val Kilmer apologizes to New Mexico neighbors for disparaging remarks

Categories:

Actor Val Kilmer apologized to his neighbors in New Mexico Wednesday at a San Miguel County Commission meeting in Las Vegas, seven years after making disparaging remarks about his San Miguel, N.M. hometown in an interview in Rolling Stone. (The actor claimed his area was “the homicide capital of the Southwest,” among other insults.) “I hope that you can recognize my deep regret for the impact my comments have had on you, my neighbors, as well as our state,” he read from a prepared statement, according to the Wall Street Journal. “I am, and wish to remain, a contributing member of our community.”

A five-member commission granted Kilmer the permit needed to open his Pecos River Ranch as a bed and breakfast inn to paying guests. (He previously had no community support behind his desire to transform the ranch, thanks to the interview.) It was an unanimous decision. “The county accepted the apology. We hope this is now behind us and we can all live as good neighbors,” said County Attorney Jesus Lopez, who once called Kilmer’s comments “incendiary.”

Al Gore accused of sexual assault; claim dropped due to lack of evidence

Categories: Politics

A 54-year-old hotel masseuse filed a sexual assault complaint against Al Gore, 62, claiming that the former Vice President forced himself on her during a massage session in 2006, according to the Portland Oregonian. Although she reported the incident to the police last year, the woman (who has opted to remain anonymous) did not want a criminal investigation, according to the county’s district attorney. However, she did provide officials with a detailed account of the alleged incident, which took place on Oct. 24, 2006. “He pleaded, groped me, grabbed me, engulfed me in embrace, tongue kissed me, massaged me, grabbed my breasts,” she stated. Gore has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

UPDATE: According to CBS News, the sexual harassment claim against Gore has been dropped, due to lack of evidence. “This case is exceptionally cleared as [the woman] refuses to cooperate with the investigation or even report a crime,” according to a police report.

YouTube ruled not guilty of Viacom copyright infringement

Categories: Movie Biz, Tech, TV Biz

A New York judge ruled yesterday that YouTube and its corporate parent, Google, didn’t infringe Viacom’s copyright when clips from Viacom-owned TV shows were posted on the website, according to BusinessWeek. Last April, Viacom filed a complaint against Google, seeking $1 billion in damages for unlawful use of protected content. But U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton said that, in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, YouTube promptly removed the clips after receiving a notice from Viacom. Under the act, service providers aren’t liable for copyright infringement if they take down the offending content when notified.

Oscars will not be moved in 2011, says Academy

Despite Internet rumors claiming the Oscars telecast would be moved up to January, officials from Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences insist that the date for the 2011 Oscars will not be changed. Director of communications Leslie Unger issued the following statement to EW: “At the June 22 meeting of the Academy’s Board of Governors, there was discussion about moving the date of the Oscar telecast earlier. The discussion was about the possibility of doing so no sooner than the 84th Academy Awards, to be held in 2012. The date for the next Oscar telecast, the 83rd, has already been announced and is firm: February 27, 2011. There are a number of questions still to be answered and challenges to be addressed with regard to moving the show to an earlier date. The Academy Governors and staff have been adn will continue to look into those questions and challenges. No decision has been made and there is currently no timetable for when a decision might be made. This idea is simply under consideration and being explored as a possibility.”
