A spokeswoman for Jennifer Capriati confirms to the AP that the former top-ranked tennis player was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after an “accidental overdose” of prescription drugs (the news was first reported by TMZ). The spokeswoman says the 34-year-old is stable and a full recovery is expected. The type of medication was not revealed. Capriati’s tennis career, which includes three Grand Slam singles titles in 2001-02 and a Gold Medal in the 1992 Olympics, has been hampered by personal issues. She was arrested in 1993 for shoplifting and again in 1994 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Didn’t she date John Daly?
Damn, and during Wimbledon, too.
How many people must end up in the hospital or dead before people learn to not mix or overuse prescription drugs? I certainly hope that this was just an accident, but that didn’t help famous people such as Brittany Murphy, Heath Ledger, Gerald Levert, Anna Nicole Smith and her son Daniel, nor all of the non-famous people who have had this happen.
It’s so easy to abuse prescription drugs. I broke my foot and got 8 prescriptions between the hospital, the orthopedist and the podiatrist for pain. Last week I hopped into my doctors office with 2 bottles and a handful of prescriptions and asked which ones I should fill.
she was hot once upon a time, so this is sad
This is sad on many levels (not because “she was hot once upon a time”). Basically, she had an ogre of a father who pushed her into turning pro at 14. The bastard was especially rough on her, along with mother and brother, and after many years of torture, the mother was able to divorce him. After losing her way, Jennifer had a great comeback in 2000, but fell by the wayside after a few years. I hope she gets the help she needs and the support of those who loved watching her play tennis.
You would think her popularity (or at least name recognition) off the court should have lead to a commentator job. Less successful players have made that transition!
It depends on how she sounded behind a mike. If she was doing drugs or sounded like a nitwit she wouldn’t get the job.
she’s neither, though. she was clean during her later playing career and she always had good post-match interviews.
