'Hot in Cleveland' drops over 1 million viewers in second week

TV Land’s sitcom Hot in Cleveland wasn’t quite as hot in its second week after its record-setting premiere last week. Last night’s episode pulled in 3.4 million viewers, dipping 1.4 million viewers from the premiere. The show — starring Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White — also lost 400,000 viewers in the highly-prized adults 25-54 demographic, and was down 200,000 female viewers aged 25-54.

It dropped viewers, cause it absolutely SUCKS. The writing is just horrible, and they have a great cast. Got so bored the first 10 minutes, I tuned out and watched Bravo re-runs.

Most people probably don’t know where TV Land is on their cable system. I never watch it.

That’s not a valid excuse. Why? Because 4 million people watched the first time, meaning 4 million could find the station. 1 million of them chose not to return. Has nothing to do with not finding TVL.

And those 1 million didn’t come back because the writing is awful. Nothing funny about this show.

I agree. The second episode was a little better(I chuckled twice), but it’s quite awful on the whole.

To say the show sucks is an understatement. I turned it off after the first ten minutes. It was painful to watch.

Betty White is a “has been”. I agree, you lost me after the first 10 minutes of the first epidode. I had rather watch a test pattern on television.

I had forgotten what a great actress Valerie Bertinelli wasn’t.

Valerie Bertinelli–a great actress??…Like Wilt Chamberlain was a great jockey.

  • Kvinna

Its ratings fell because it was advertised as focusing on Betty White, while the character she plays just does walk-ins. It was as if very failed NBC show combined into one, quite disappointing.

  • Kvinna

*every failed show, not “very” failed show.

I haven’t watched the 2nd episode, yet, but the 1st was not good. Sometimes it takes a couple episodes to get the kinks out. The cast is great, but I don’t expect the show to survive.

The show, while terrible, could drop another million or so viewers and still be TV Land’s biggest success story. If the viewership levels out at around 2.5 million, the show WILL survive without a problem.

I think the show has potential, but the weak link is Valerie Bertinelli. She’s adorable and very likable, but she really can’t act. The other women in the show are much better actresses and comediennes.

Well, we had huge swatch of severe thunderstorms and tornados all across the midwest last night… we all had out electronics off. I’ve literally never see a storm like that – well over three minutes of constant lightning illumination (like daylight, but from dozens of lightning bolts) at one point.

  • jake

    ….yeah. that was probably it.

The show is fun and fine for the summer. Every show has a dip after the first episode, as lots of people sample the first week. The second show was funny, but not as funny as the first. Betty White is on quite a bit of the show, not just a walk on.

I watch the show last night. I think Valerie B. is not the best actress and she really can’t act. She is the weak. Wendie M., Jane L., and Betty White did very well. They are so funny. The writers are terrible. They should have write the better materials for them. I am disappointed about the viewers rating has drop. It is not Betty’s fault. She is right about the writers that they don’t know how to write better materials. I am planning to watch it again next week and find out who is going to play Betty’s date on the show. Hope it is a younger man. That would be fun to watch.

Keep in mind, Seinfeld was pretty much a flop the first season and we know what happened there….When I look at first episodes of almost every highly successful sitcom, it took a while for the actors/writers to get in their groove.

  • Marky

I love this cast and PLEEEEEZE give this show some time and some new writers! Betty White is priceless and Wendy and Jane are great. Valerie is okay, but a whole lot of it is the writing. The story line is clever; always liked the idea that all good things happen in Cleveland; just get some good material! I won’t give up and I hope others won’t either.

    • TVLand SUCKS

Betty White is a legend and doesn’t deserve such a demeaning role. Valerie Bertenelli still looks pretty good for being an old gal, but her teenage perkiness is irrelevant for a 50 year old. Aside for that, TVLand should stick to what they did best years ago: deliver classic, quality programs from an era when there were talented writers, producers, etc. TVLand has lost a huge viewing audience in recent years, and will continue to lose more if they don’t get their act together.

I watched this show last week and thought it was pretty cheesy but it was okay to watch on a summer weeknight. Plus, I like all the actresses in it so I hope it ends up doing okay.

  • Dayne

I liked both shows, I like Valerie Bertinelli and Betty White would be great in anything she did, Need new writers…bottom line!

  • Diane

I really like the show. I simply forgot it was on last night. TV Land is not a network I watch on a regular basis. I did watch it today on the tvland’s website. I like it because its easy to watch, you don’t have to think, and you can just laugh.

  • fernando

This show is awesome and funny and everyone who dosent think so now longer knows what good tv is instead they want more cop and doctor shows and vampire shows give this show a chance its different either way Tvland will not cancel this show because it is the only show they have

    • TVLand SUCKS

Hey Fernando, TVLand is sinking faster than they can stay afloat. From their absurd phony reality shows, to their focus on junk sitcoms from the 80′s+, to their feeble attempt to construct a comedy known as: Hot In Cleveland, they haven’t a clue anymore. Hot In Cleveland is a bomb. Only a mere fringe out there actually enjoy that crappy “sitcom.” So like it all you want, Fernando, but don’t be surprised when the ratings go out of scope and TVLand dumps the show, like they’ve dumped plenty of their inane “reality” shows. TVLand SUCKS!
