A free concert at New York City’s South Street Seaport featuring hip-hop star Drake and the group Hanson was canceled yesterday when the organizers found themselves overwhelmed by the number of fans, some who turned unruly. A crowd of about 10,000 was expected, but Fox New York reported that as many as 25,000 packed the Pier 17 area for the show. Organizers said in a statement that the event was canceled after the situation was no longer safe. Fights broke out and video recorded chairs being thrown into the crowd.
The police arrested two people, for obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct, and three people were treated for minor injuries.
The Canadian rapper never took the stage and later tweeted, “I am so disappointed. To all the devoted fans that came out I wish you could have seen what I had planned! Until next time.”

Who the hell is “Drake”?
I don’t know either, but he/she has a stampeding fan base. No brain trusts there.
Haven’t a clue, but one-named “artistes” are usually lousy.
Hmm. You mean like Cher, Prince, Morrissey, Sting, Madonna…
He’s actually a pretty good rapper (as far as the modern genre goes) and an individualistic talent. Not on the same tier as Kanye West, Mos Def and Jay-Z…but nevertheless worth a listen
Not a fan of Cher, so I’d put her in the lousy category. And I didn’t say all of them were lousy, but I’m getting tired of Ke$ha-style idiots with no talent or substance. I’d list more, but most are completely forgettable.
Acyually, his claim to fame is that he played a teenager who was shot and made a parapelegic in Canada’s Degrassi High School series.
His claim to fame is that he was Rhianna’s rebound boyfriend last summer. Seriously, that’s it.
Noo , he’s Known as Lil Wayne Protege & His claim to Fame was his Top Charted Mixtape So Far Gone & his Highly Anticipated Album Thank Me later Dropped Yesterday
Not to mention he was one of the stars of Degrassi: TNG which was/is an AMAZING show!
Thanks Kamilah for schooling these ignorant people on who Drake is; one of the hottest welknown rappers out!
He’s actually a very decent rapper with some excellent mixtapes. “Thank Me Later,” his debut LP which got released yesterday, is getting great reviews.
He’d actually say the same about you.
That’s funny, I was thinking the same thing
Have to admit JPX I was wondering the same thing..
$4 million dollar man .. u clueless guy (lol)
I think that they should have chosen a larger venue to handle that crowd. Because Drake’s new album came out last week, you can see how anticipated those fans were to hear the new songs live.
“Jimmy Brooks, WE LOVE YOU!!! STAMPEDE!!!”
Isn’t he supposed to be some new hot rap guy? Probably the concert was done for publicity. Nice going.
This wasn’t just Drake’s concert. Hanson was also scheduled to perform. Just saying.
I’ve only read about this guy in EW, haven’t heard his music. I’m just glad that the Hanson fans weren’t blamed for the fracas, for once.
Oh, I totally agree with you on this one. Hanson fans as a whole get a really bad rap.
Amen!
When I think of Hanson fans, I think Siobhan Magnus. A crowd of several thousand whacky, good-looking Siobhans would not be a bad thing.
Seriously, though, I think Hanson fans are pretty calm, genteel people.
And cynically, it doesn’t hurt Hanson’s commercial comeback after some critically well-regarded Indie years that media reports that they had to cancel a concert because thousands more fans showed up than could be handled safely.
Check out FOUR BILLION BUCKS
well i know personally i was looking forward to some good tunes and cracking some folks on the head with some chairs during intermission. oh well
drake, you will always be wheelchair jimmy to me
Thats why i did’nt go in the first place, his music is hot but keep it real im no male groupie, not like the chicks was gona be throwing me their panties im saying
Hanson has fan? I thought the little girls grew up.
OK But not too many any more.
Craig, I know the Hanson fans aren’t in as large numbers as they were 10+ years ago – they’ll never sell out a stadium again. But they have a smaller but devoted core of supportive fans (yes, the fans grew up – amazing what happens with time) and not only do they have a new album out but they’re touring with Rooney this summer in smaller clubs.
YA MUST LIVE UNDER A ROCK TO NOT KNOW WHO DRAKE IS. I MEAN THE RIOT WAS NOT NEEDED. BUT PPL JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO ACT.THAT WOULD NOT BE ME.
I don’t live under a rock, I just like good music, not crap.
@ JPX – So you don’t know who he is or you think his music isn’t good? Which is it?”Good” music is a matter of opinion. I happen to think a few of his songs are “good”. Or do you listen to a “good” genre like rock, because not all rock is good.
Confused as to this double-bill. The styles just don’t seem related.
why would anyone put Hanson and Drake together for a concert in the first place…..
Like Susan Boyle opening for AC/DC.
Obviously you people are highly uneducated in the hip hop aspect. DRAKE is hot. In fact he is probably gonna be one of the hottest. He is a very successful artist. Respect it. Not for publicity; we left that to DrakeOver. Now he’s a ventriloquist and you people say what he say
I blame Ninjasonik.
