Sean Penn attached to produce, possibly star in surfing biopic

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies

Variety is reporting that Sean Penn is attached to produce and possibly star in a biopic about surfing legend Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, who famously abandoned a medical practice and traveled along American beaches with his wife, eight sons, and one daughter in a 24-foot RV. (The Paskowitz clan was also the subject of the 2008 documentary Surfwise.) Alan and Gabe Polsky (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) are also producing, and producer Paul Feldsher (The Four Feathers) is attached to write the script.

In the same story, Variety also mentioned that Penn is interested in joining director Curtis Hanson’s soon-to-shoot surfing movie Mavericks in a supporting role.

Pee-wee has been enjoying a resurgence of late, thanks to Reubens’ Los Angeles revival of the original 1981 stage show that first launched the character, which is set to move to Broadway for a limited run starting in previews Oct 26. Reubens has been open about his hope that the new stage production would help build enough buzz for a new Pee-wee movie; he said in EW earlier this year that he had already written two screenplays.
