John Travolta's dogs killed at Maine airport

Categories:

Two dogs belonging to John Travolta were struck and killed by a service truck at an airport in Maine last Thursday, the Bangor Daily News reports. The city released the following statement detailing the accident: “At approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010, an airplane carrying members of the John Travolta family landed at [Bangor International Airport]. While there, two small dogs were taken for a walk by someone who is not a family member. An airport service pickup truck was approaching the airplane to service the airplane and did not see the dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs were struck and killed. The airport is investigating the accident. Out of respect for the family’s privacy the city will make no further comment.”

An official at the airport explained that the news was not released sooner because it is policy to not comment on the identity of passengers traveling through the facility. The Bangor Daily News learned of the accident after obtaining an email sent by the Bangor Interim City Manager to the nine city councilors. It is unknown if charges will be filed or whether the dogs were on leashes before they were struck.

Juan-Carlos Cruz pleads not guilty

Categories:

Juan-Carlos Cruz, a former Food Network chef, pleaded not guilty to a murder-for-hire scheme, according to People. Cruz was charged in L.A. with one count of attempted premeditated murder for allegedly trying to recruit two homeless men to kill his wife. Cruz was the host of Calorie Commando from 2004 to 2006. He is currently being held on $2 million bail.

UPDATE: Sources tell EW that police are investigating “tangible evidence” that Cruz planned to commit suicide after the murder. According to the source, who insisted on anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, Cruz allegedly tried to hire hit men because his wife was deeply depressed over their inability to have children, but her religious beliefs prevented her from committing suicide.

Black Sabbath lead singer Ronnie James Dio dies

Categories: In Memoriam, Music

According to a statement on his official website, heavy metal god Ronnie James Dio — who fronted Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne’s departure in 1979, then went on to found his own eponymous band — has died at the (reported) age of 67. In the statement, wife and manager Wendy Dio wrote, “Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

Dio was battling stomach cancer diagnosed last fall, and cancelled this summer’s tour with his current band, Heaven & Hell, due to his deteriorating health.

You can read our full obituary on the Music Mix blog now, where we’ll also post a musical appreciation tomorrow.
